    ETYMOLOGY
A tangent is where a line 'just touches' a curve, sharing the same angle for a bit before carrying off to infinity.
    WHAT IS THAT MUSIC?
"Dandelion Snow" by Ian Paul Livingstone
"Still Water Reflection" by Simon Charles Porter
    TRANSCRIPT
You and I have never met, many times before.
Our paths might have crossed once or twice online,
    or passing in the street,
We might've lived in the same neighborhood all our lives,
    but against incredible odds,
we just happened to miss each other.
It's a big world, after all.
Our days must be filled with these chance encounters,
that for a million tiny reasons, never actually take place.
Accidental strangers, who just happened to miss their cue.
    who share everything in common,
    except for time and place.
For years, their stories might've been happening in parallel,
harmonizing from somewhere across the world,
but neither has any idea that the other even exists.
If two lines are truly parallel,
it means they'll never actually meet.
It's hard not to wonder where they are right now,
veering away on a tangent, in some parallel universe,
Hard not to glance at a stranger in a crowd,
and imagine the life you might have shared,
    if things had been different,
and feel a pang of missed connection
as you carry on your separate ways,
    leaving nothing but an echo
of something that might have been.
You never know how many things had to happen exactly right
for you to meet the one you love,
You never know how easily fate might have tipped you onto some other course,
meeting some other person, who would feel like a soulmate.
Maybe you'd still be telling your friends it was always meant to be,
As if you knew all along that your paths would cross.
Or maybe you'd look back at your life and realize:
it was nothing personal-it's all just a coincidence.
    You never know.

Making this episode was a joy, but naturally took forever to find shots that paired up. Sifting through hours of people's Super8 and 16mm home videos was one of the sweetest wisftully painful pleasures I've ever had. If you ever get tired of what the world has come to, browse around on Vimeo for old movies like this. Even just the soft grainy color of the film stock will make your heart ache.

I love alll the stuff on this channel, and I'm so glad to see more! You know, I always wished there was a Twilight Zone-esque series based on these words, each episode a half-hour or an hour designed to evoke and discuss one of the words... It could be awesome. Just throwing that idea out there!

Funny you should mention that. I actually pitched a series idea to a digital network with a friend of mine a few months ago. The idea was this: each episode would define an Obscure Sorrow through a narrative story, following the arc of the emotion as the character experiences it, exactly like Twilight Zone in structure. Each week we'd would follow a different character, but as you watched you'd notice them pop up again, going about their lives, as extras in the background. The young soldier we followed in Episode 4 would appear again in Episode 9, as an older man dealing with life as a veteran, buying groceries from our main character. All of these stories would intersect with each other in a dozen different ways, invisible to them but ever more clear to the viewer, enriching the fabric of the world the more they watched. I would have called the series SONDER. Never heard back though.

Before I heard him, I always believed music filled in when I didn't have the words or just didn't or couldn't use them. But music is comprised of words.. I had a "I never through about it that way before?" An Ah ha moment. I love those😊

Okay I’m a little proud of the fact that at 1:56 I was able to have the person in the puffy jacket walk across the left frame but never through the right, even though she would of course walk across both. She just never shows up. Helps drive a subtle wedge between left and right.

beautiful edit all around: i'm particularly entranced by that last two-shot/split-screen. obviously you graded the color in the right "frame" to give the appearance that it's a different shot entirely; but it also looks like you de-stabilized it a bit (or something to that effect)? regardless, beautifully done. bravo, bravo.

Some ideas I would like defined, if you don't mind:
    1. Realizing in retrospect that someone was valuable to you, even if they didn't seem so at the time.
    2. The rejection of certain people in our lives due to a character trait they possess reminiscent of someone who hurt us.
    3. The aversion to having one's picture or video taken, or one's aversion to social media as a platform to share these due to a fear of those you used to know seeing you change.

Something similar just happened to me. I went on a date yesterday, and it went very well. She was smart, crazy, funny. We talked for hours without stopping. It might be the one and only date we have. She’s moving to Texas. Even on that first date, I already wanted to know more about her and be around her more. Perhaps it was the fact I knew she wasn’t gonna be around soon that sparked this feeling. It made it easier on my part to feel this way. An ache for a relationship that won’t be explored. The love and heartache that can’t be experienced with such a wonderful human

What do you call the feeling of suddenly completely understanding something you've known forever? That one moment where suddenly something you thought you knew becomes so very known, and understood, and felt, to the point that you question how you never saw it before. You feel the need to share this information you knew but now you truly understand, and it's like a small epiphany just for you. Everyone else seems to have already understood, and you have to savour this newfound comprehension on your own.

The feeling when you have a certain feeling or idea or train of thoughts and feel related to all the humans in the past and in the future who had or will have the exact same thought/feeling. It's pretty hard to explain (that's part of the reason why I'd hope you'd make a video on it) but hopefully my English was good enough for you to understand.

And then I imagine how many people in the past and in the future have thought this same thing, had this same feeling... Wow... It's an wonderful thing to think about, isnt it? At least now I know somebody else in some distant (or near?) corner of the world feels the same way as I do :-)

It was a summer day. One of those when you just want to sing and dance and mess around.
I left home for a train station in the morning. On the way I passed a bench. And on that bench an old man was sitting. And that old man was playing a guitar and singing old trump songs my generation does not remember anymore.
I looked at him, but my shy eyes ran away soon, I kept walking.
He too looked at me and said: "Come here, young man, sit down."
I answered, surprised: "I am sorry, there is a train I have to catch."
Still playing the guitar he answered: "I have to catch all the trains yet I am sitting here."
I smiled and left the scene.
Soon I forgot all of this. A year later the memory came back to me, and since then I have been wondering... what would change if I stopped? Harsh times came after the meeting... would it all be different if I sat down back then?
I never seen the old man since that summer day, although I pass that bench every single day.
    He was an accidental stranger.

Define this for me. the feeling that you are the main character in your own movie and expect yourself to be destined for some great adventure where you "save the world" like you are meant to be the most important person in the world. yet you find that you have trouble living up to that role and/or feel like its not gonna happen, like you're just ordinary...

there must be a word for intensely missing a specific source of entertainment which engulfs ones heart in deep sorrow ultimately enlightening and embracing the darker points of life which can't otherwise be obtained in conventional means of entertainment or pastime.

But seriously yeah, what you described does need a word because that is quite literally an obscure sorrow.

    YOU'RE BACK!
Coincidentally, I was just thinking today about how slim the chance is that you'll actually find "true love." The world is so massive, and, in reality, you meet so few people in your life, that it's nearly impossible to know whether you're actually the happiest you could be. It's certainly possible to be content with who you find, but in the end, all anyone ever does is settle for someone they find good enough.

So is there a word for what this channel is? I'd describe it as one of those rare and exceedingly exquisite things that you once found and took home with you. You kept it safe in your special drawer. In time, it moved its way to the bottom of that drawer, as time went by, and as other items cluttered your drawer. Then one day, by happy chance, it resurfaces, and you experience that special joy of realizing that not only did this thing existed, but you had it in your posession, and now you could revel in its existence again. And it was wonderful.

Emotion suggestions- when you feel unable to talk to people and friends around you but cannot find the reason why. Perhaps it's because you don't feel as if anything you say will change what's going on around you, or you just can't think of anything to contribute to a conversation. Maybe you're just tired. But whatever it is, it makes you want to stay silent
I'm not sure if this a thing everyone feels but I feel it quite often so I thought it was worth a suggestion

What parts of production? Editing, searching for footage? Writing?

    • @ericpa06
      @ericpa06 7 лет назад +15

Well, personally, for me, one aspect that particularly interest me would be your process of searching for footage.
'Cause I think that for somebody that produces this kind of video, this is probably the biggest time consuming stage,' cause you can't just type in Google or Vimeo, for instance: "Video of a couple entering in an abandoned old building the afternoon ", if you wanna a footage like this you have to type something more as "abandoned building" and search through tens of videos.
If you want footage of people on earth seeing the man landing on the moon looking with their full towards the TV, maybe you can search for any series that takes places in the 60s (I was searching for a scene like this and ended up finding it in the series "Mad Men" LOL).
So it would be really cool to see how your process works, see your advice and such. And hints on how to find that special scene.
But it would be great to see other parts of your creation process too, especially your written process and work-flow!
