  • Don't void your warranty to your Mercury engine! Listen to this official service bulletin from Mercury.
    Lithium Pros cranking battery: lithiumpros.co...
    The Memo:
    Lithium Ion Battery Use
    Scope
Mercury Marine has received inquiries about the use of Lithium Ion cranking batteries. While Mercury has not certified the use
of Lithium Ion chemistry engine cranking batteries as stated in our engine installation manuals, we acknowledge that several
OEMs have tested and approved Lithium Ion chemistry batteries specific for their boat applications.
All standalone Lithium Ion battery packs should have a battery management system (BMS) to protect the battery from damage
and any safety issues that may arise. The BMS is unique to all Lithium Ion batteries and the conditions at which it engages to
protect the battery varies across the range of manufacturers. When troubleshooting electrical issues related to the engine/boat
interface, it is important to ensure the cranking battery system is operating properly. Consider the following when
    troubleshooting:
    • Refer to the Lithium Ion battery manufacturer’s instructions or ABYC TE‑13 for understanding Lithium Ion batteries.
    • Use the engine freeze frame data in G3 for determining the state of the electrical system at the time of the fault (refer to the
appropriate service manual for fault diagnostics).
    • Isolation of components during troubleshooting may be accomplished via bypassing the Lithium Ion battery with an AGM or
    lead acid battery temporarily.
    • The following variables impact all boat electrical systems:
    Operating conditions: temperature and vibration
Component condition: circuit protection, starter, battery, cables, power posts, and battery switch
Electrical operation/setpoint: alternator, ACR/isolator operation, parallel operation, and battery charger
    Correction
Mercury Marine approves the use of lead acid or AGM batteries-depending on engine model, in all engine starting
applications. The specifications for each individual engine are listed in the engine’s Operation, Installation, and Service
    Manuals.
    Warranty
The use of Lithium Ion batteries will not void the engine warranty, however, claims for failures on the engine components
caused by Lithium Ion batteries may be denied. Refer any battery related issues to the installer.

Great job John. The BMS is just that, a Battery Management System. Part of the BMS programming is protection from the outboard overcharging it, it controls the state of charging. If you fire up the big motor, take off with a full charge the BMS prevents / shuts down the big motor from charging the battery by shutting down the charge process. If you know anyone running a “one size fits all” lithium battery and you hear them talking about how they fire up the big motor, get moving down the lake and the big motor shuts down, that’s because they do not have a proper cranking lithium battery with a BMS or with a BMS programmed to their specific outboard. When you fire up the big motor its going to charge and charge and charge. What happens is the lithium reaches peak charge much faster because there much more efficient and without a programmed BMS the outboard engine computer recognizes overcharging throwing an overcharge code shutting the engine down protecting it from any electrical damage. You’ll hear them say they drop the trolling motor run all of the electronics etc. to run down the lithium battery and the big motor fires right up. Problem is they take back off and repeat the outboard shutting down issue again. Bottom line if your running lithium’s make sure the cranking lithium is a cranking lithium with a programmed BMS to your outboard. I run a lithium cranking battery on my SHO 250 and the BMS programming is different than the MERC because of different outboard charging systems. BMS, BMS, BMS. This is why Mercury and Yamaha, I called them, were initially saying and are careful in the warranty wording. No BMS you could cause serious damage to your outboard that the warranty shouldn’t cover. The quality brands will know exactly what your talking about when you call them and ask. Call the manufacturer! If your looking at brand whatever and they cannot speak on the BMS DON’T BUY IT! John good luck this year and safe travels. I’ll be the loud guy cheering for you from Central Alabama 👊💥🎣🔨🇺🇸

Almost got it John. Starting motor on a 3s lipo OK. 13-6 to 14.2v full charge. Starting current does not run through the BMS. BMS is protection form incorrect current going into the battery from the motors charging system All lipos have there own charging algorithm. We R?C guys have blown up a few over the years. Lipo specific charger is a must. Merc does not have such. I dont know for sure if the new generation BMS will accept constant amps inbound to the battery from the Mercs charging system. Its all about the charging !

John- did you read the entire bulletin? Including the copyright information at the bottom?
The statement "void the warranty" is something that has been used widely, and in reality, there is no such a thing. The Magnuson Moss Warranty Act (of 1976, as amended) eliminated any chance of "voiding a warranty" for this type of purpose.

By law they technically can’t “void” a warranty. They certainly can deny your claim if the failure is caused by your lithium battery. Basically they can’t deny a claim on a lower unit if you have a lithium battery.

Most Lithiums won't start an outboard motor, the BMS will shut down. Ask me how I know. All lithiums have a BMS, the important key factor is whether or not the lithium can handle the cranking amps during startup.

For the longest time we were told that we had to use a DC-DC converter to charge a Li battery from the alternator. Reason being the Li would take the amperage up to high and the alternator would overheat. Does anyone know what changed to allow a Li battery to be directly connected to the engine alternator????

LithiumPros isnt the only qualified marine starting battery maker. Seaquest battery uses quality BMS's as well. Incidentally.. that giant group 31 100Ah starting battery is overkill. SQ makes a LiFepo4 battery 1/2 that size and 1/2 the weight that starts that big Merc just fine. $1800 / 30 lbs vs. $750 / 15 lbs.

My question is will Mercury possibly not warranty any issues that arise from a lead acid or AGM battery issue? Would they treat those the same as a potential lithium battery issue, or do they do a full send on warranty for old technology? My bet is they would say the same thing about the old batteries.

It's not even worth the conversation. For the one battery that you use for your cranking motor, to ensure that your warranty on the most expensive piece of equipment on your boat is covered, just use a regular lead acid battery and be done with it. Until Mercury says in plain language that your warranty is not in jeopardy, it's foolish to take the risk.

    • @Cerus98
      @Cerus98 2 года назад
