    You should be using 10W-30 synthetic blend for the 250 V8 Pro XS, check the decal on back small cover on powerhead or owners manual.

    • @kadenengle9385
      @kadenengle9385 3 года назад +1

      Owners manual recommends 1030 but says 2540 is acceptable… in my opinion 2540 is much better in an outboard, and it’s what I run in my Merc 150.

    • @elkbow
      @elkbow 2 года назад +1

      @@kadenengle9385 I agree, I run 25W-40 in mine, especially in hot weather like here in New Mexico

      So I'm in FL have the 250 pro XS, and because of this video I bought 25W-40. So my outboard will be ok?

    • @elkbow
      @elkbow 2 года назад +1

      @@DinsmoreOutdoors will be fine, it's even listed in your manual as an alternative. The reason why they say 10W-30 is cold places, it will work fine in cold or hot, but man it's like pee in hot weather.

    Hey John, Have you ever heard a tic, tic ,tic sound after lowering your motor and releasing trim button. I have a 2023 200 HP merc, does it when motor is about 80 % trimmed down to start, then I decide to trim a bit more , "tic, tic, tic" Thanks

    • @JohnCrews
      @JohnCrews  Год назад

      It likely needs grease on the trim piston ends. Just run motor up and put on the balls on end of the pistons with your finger

    What are the diffrences at 25w40 and 10w30? My boat stays 365 days a year outside, what is the best oil I van use for a mercury fourstroke?

    • @JohnCrews
      @JohnCrews  3 года назад

      Higher the number, the thicker the viscosity. Stay with the owners manual recommendation

    Nice video! Quick question. Doesn't the motor need to be in water (or have water flushing through it) before you start it up and look for leakage? For us first time boat owners, how is that done from your garage?
    Thanks!

    • @JohnCrews
      @JohnCrews  4 года назад +2

      You can start it with no water for 5-10 seconds. Thanks!

    • @heldercorreia9350
      @heldercorreia9350 4 года назад +2

      You have to use what they call ear muffs attached to water pickup on gearcase using a garden hose.

      @@JohnCrews great video! Straight forward and simple. Not to be argumentative, but I have seen an impeller go bad in literally 5 seconds from starting an outboard with no water. I would not recommend starting it without water. Especially multiple times, overtime. Each to his own I suppose…

    Should you run the motor prior to changing the oil?

    • @KansasAnglingExperience
      @KansasAnglingExperience Год назад

      You don’t have to but it helps to have the engine warmed up so the oil flows out nicely.

  • @bakervinci163

    I feel almost certain that I was told to change the gear and motor oil after the 10 hour break in. Is that not correct ? I just got a 2023 300r and am doing it anyway. Maybe it’s overkill

    • @Maynardd
      @Maynardd Год назад

      It is overkill, my dealer told me to do the same thing at 20 hours. There is nothing in the manual that states this. I called mercury and they said there is no need to do anything until the 100 hour mark. But they also mentioned it certainly isn’t going to hurt because then you can check for metal in the oil and or gear lube. Then again, your motor is under warranty. so it’s not going to hurt to do it. But you don’t need to.
