I came here for the hook info but I’m so glad I got the information about hook setting. I’ve really struggled with getting too excited and yanking it right out of the fishes mouth

Great stuff. I love the fact that a lot of your advice is really based on common sense and experience. You need to bless us with a video discussing how important time on the water is. I've got five decades, and I'm still learning! Just can't get enough. Thanks for taking the time to share with us all. We really appreciate it! Tight lines!

Personally, the heaviest setup I fish with is a St. Croix 7’ MH Premier (closer to most companies’ H ratings, it’s quite stiff and fast and can handle lures well above the rated 1oz limit) with 15lb AbrazX on it. That’s the heavy jig and big live bait rod, as well as the Pike rod.
Because of that, because I’m mostly using line of 6 to 15 pounds and no rods capable of breaking those lines at full bend, I always use the smallest and lightest wire hooks I can get away with. The one exception is probably the Owner 7/0 Oversize Worm Hook I use in the gooseberry Ol’ Monster. That hook is extremely easy to set, even with a long cast using 0.012 inch diameter nylon mono. Maybe a bit big and maybe I lose a bite or two because it’s kinda big, but anything that inhales that worm gets stuck and stays stuck. The wire really isn’t overly heavy, either, at least not on the 7/0. It’s well matched to the St. Croix PC56MF, Shimano Curado K 201, and the 10lb Sufix Elite. A 1/16oz tungsten worm sinker pegged in front, and that Ol’ Monster falls nice and slowly.

From my experience, it's possible to over power your hooks with drag as well. I found that I lost or almost lost a few fish using the heavy wire hooks with too tight of drag. I would end up tearing a bigger hole in the fishes mouth for that hook to pop out. Keep that in mind as well.

Great tip. I’d love to see the tip on rigging the beaver bait when you get the chance.
I’d love to see a video of you explaining your approach to shallow cover when you’re flipping. Boat position, trolling motor speed, what you look for when flipping etc.

Well Randy,I trust your opinion better than any and this settles it. Word has it that the hookup ratio is much better with a straight shank hooks when compared to off set or ewg hooks

Gamakatsu G-Finesse heavy cover worm hook is my absolute favorite hook of all time. 1/0-2/0 for floating worms on fluoro and 3/0-5/0 on 30-50 lb braid for Texas rigs never bent one out and don’t need to set the hook as hard as you would on normal flipping hooks. Man was a genius, R.I.P Aaron Martens.

Q: Was the Trick worm rigged flat-side-up deliberately?
Q: Does obtrusiveness matter in dirtier water, nighttime? (I've a lot of EWGs .... paid for.)

Thank you for the tips. Question... at 8:15- is there a specific reason why you bring the hook through what I have always thought (assumed) is the top of the worm (the rounded or "ridged" side), versus the flat or "bottom" (at least to me) side of the worm?

I, too, consider profile when choosing a hook. I think some hooks add too much to a bait's profile.
