This is an effect that disappears into the sand using the CC Ball Action, which is the basic effect of After Effects.

Is it possible to do this with a portrait? Have the image of a person turn to sand and then dissolve?
That's a good question~! Of course, portrait photography is also possible. However, in the case of a photograph, it must be applied in a slightly different way because the shape must be seen.
You can do this by specifying the original photo as an alpha matte in the Sand Effect.
I attached the project file. It's not very complicated, so if you open it, you'll know how it was done. Hope this helps.

Hello, there is a difficulty with this method in order to keep the sand flowing.
After testing, looping the mat does not create a flowing expression.

Hey awesome effect! Really well done tutorial. I had a question: The PNG i'm using this effect on is not a solid color shape, it's a detailed gold embossed logo with texture and bevel highlights. The effect still works great but it changes it's colors. Is there a way to overlay the original PNG's color / surface data on top of this effect at the end, maybe like a mask or setting some color source to the original? Thanks for any help.
actually i figured out how to set the alpha channel of the original logo to the sand effect one. problem is the positioning is different so I don't yet know how to create an offset for the alpha channel to map differently. also any cool effect outside of the logo shape is lost.

To use the original color of the logo, you must additionally specify the logo image as an alpha matte. In addition, the logo can be made more comfortable by working as an image as a png of the final result.

@@TutoView yeah thanks for the help. right now im using the sand effect comp as an alpha matte for the original logo image but I think i need to do it the other way around and use the original logo as an alpha matte for the sand effect. i'll try it out! thanks
Can it be applied with a green screen video? A person “mealting” into sand to be more specific?
I haven't tried it that way, but I think it's possible.

is it possible to do this with text? would it have to bee a text as an image layer or could it be possible as a text layer?
This is also possible with text. You can do this by writing text and pre-compose it so that it is recognized as a single image. Most effects applied to images can also be applied to text this way.

This video was made before the CC Ball effect was updated in the latest version of AE. I'll try to make a better tutorial with the latest CC Ball when I get a chance, thanks for your interest.

For landscapes, you can use assets from 'quixel megascan' to make them look great. Surprisingly, all of this is free. The key to creating a landscape is the arrangement and layout design of surrounding objects rather than technology. I'll do a tutorial on how to create a landscape later when I get a chance.
