    The problem with people calling the series woke is based on the trend of "representation" or "replacement" character's sex-es or ethnicity. I think people by their ignorance assume that the series is extremely woke by cast itself and main characters gender. From my point of view replacing white straight male characters in the movies based on books where they are described as white straight males is the same as banning black people from acting in 50-s and further. As far as I hate a "woke" approach and I prefer just natural approach to casting or books/comic-books based movies/series - I hate the same people trying to find everywhere the woke agenda. Especially that series is just an adaptation of comic book story where the main characters are teenage girls. Simple as that.

    • @freespeechchampsusanwojcic2528

      It does have some "woke" elements. I would have to read over the books again, but I don't remember Erin being so traumatized by being from an immigrant family and how hard life is for her mom because she's "different." Mack's older brother telling her that the things she says are wrong, it's a different time now, their father put wrong ideas in their head, etc. When they're in 1999 and go to KJ's house and Tiffany says, "not surprised there's no black people here," get it, because KJ's rich and white; then, '99 Tiffany says when she went to MIT she got "stares and assumptions" implication being that she's black and doesn't belong there. I don't remember the books being so agenda pushing as the series, as mild as the wokeism is in the show, it shouldn't be there interfering with the adventure elements. The series was always a love letter to the teen adventure romps from the 80's that had diverse characters, but I don't remember those movies shoving it in your face or bringing it up.

    Paper Girls is one of my favorite stories of all time. The show is good but didn't really live up to my expectations, though that's on me. I liked all the casting a lot, except for Jason Mantzoukas as Grandfather. I'm a fan of Mantzoukas, but the depiction of Grandfather in the show didn't really match the books. He LOOKS like him but doesn't really act like him. It's like that criticism folks have of the Goblet of Fire movie, Dumbledore screaming at Harry when the source material describes him as calm. That pretty much applies to the show's version of Grandfather. He seemed so level headed in the comics but in the show he's just consistently aggressive and over-the-top. Oh well though, hoping for a season 2.

Don't heavily play on 80's nostalgia and doesn't have supernatural elements also has nothing to do with time travel. So people need to stop the PG vs ST comparisons.

    The criticism i have is due to Erin being nerdy and her job as a paralegal being portrayed as a "loser job". I also didn't like how it doesn't have much comedy since much of the comic has alot of humor and the fact the series has Ali Wong as adult Erin yet most of her arc is dramatic, her sister hates her which is nothing like the comic since her sister originally never hate her and is a helicopter pilot which was way cool (speaking of helicopters, its crazy that Danny never heard of Airwolf) At first it was cool that Mac got to hang with her brother and him regretting his old life and wanting to be a better brother to her but that went downhill when he starts treating her like one of his kids. The Apple gags being removed was a bummer I guess Amazon didn't want a lawsuit. The stupidest thing i seen is when KJ gets mad over seeing her future self making out with a woman. The series shouldn't have any villains since neither factions aren't villains in the comics

    • @dannymalt
      @dannymalt  2 года назад +2

      Do I need to watch Airwolf now, am I missing out, lol? Agreed the comic was funnier/better, also Erin's job change from the comic was unnecessary. I think the Erin young/old relationship was better in the comic, but KJ, Mac and Tiffany young/old stuff was maybe better in the TV Show. I liked how Kj didn't know she was gay at her age, so when she sees herself making out with a girl in the future it kind of shocks her, I wouldn't say she was mad about it per say, but definitely some initial shock.

    • @tonyvandeyl8575
      @tonyvandeyl8575 Год назад

      In the 80s, being gay was still taboo and she hadn't figured herself out yet so it must have come as a shock. Im sure at that age, none of the girls were interested in boys at all. My main question mark is with why all of them are dropping f-bombs so frequently. Erin in particular, i would think would have a more disciplined household and if she were caught saying that, would probably be in huge trouble with her mother.

    The series doesn't match up to the comic book. Being a fan of Brian K. Vaughan from Ex Machina, I picked up Paper Girls years ago and was surprised with what a fun ride it was, different, exciting, nostalgic, yet futuristic. The problem with this series is the lack of budget, so it falls into the same rut that other adaptations do when they don't have the money to bring high concepts to the big screen: dialog and character development. The comic took the mundane and turned it into the fantastic, the series takes the fantastic and turns it into the mundane. The series lacks in the fantasy and adventure elements the book did so well, as far as emotional catharsis and coming of age elements it does better in those arenas but that's not what I tuned in for, it becomes cheap. Overall, I would say the series wound meh rather than awesome, this could have had the same impact as Stranger Things for Amazon, instead it's just another middling show in an already bloated streaming roster.

    the first episode really hurt. i had volume one on my shelf since 2016 but never got around to reading due to other stuff. fast forward i see it’s getting a show so i dust of my copy and immediately fell in love with the story. and though i see the comparisons to ST, Paper Girls the comic fully stands on its own as a great story with stellar art. but after watching the first episode and seeing how they crammed 5 of the main comic issues into 1 EPISODE, it completely shut me off from wanting to continue the show. o thought the show was gonna follow how the comic was but instead it did a speed run on the main story just to push the future plot line that would happen at the end of issue 5. i think they did that cause they wanted to shoehorn their comedian star as quickly as they can with no build up. episode one was a huge let down and didn’t capture me like i though it was. i might not continue this show and just finish the comic series instead.

I thought the girls saying "F***" was a bit overused especially for the time period they are from. I think "Mac" was the only one where it really felt in place. The girls also seemed to be overly bold in a variety of situations and downright abrasive towards other people (Larry). Still a fun show overall. I hope they clean things up a bit in season two.

    I really enjoyed the cast, especially KJ and Tiffany, but that doesn't mean Erin and Mac are subpar, Mac's wrestle with having to go back "home" and dying in 4 years versus staying in the future with a cure hit me in the gut. Erin's back and forth with her future self had some powerful moments. I did like that the Prioress was given a bigger part, but I was curious if this show was perhaps a reimagined timeline that was created when Jahpo/The Grandfather broke the rules of his own faction, went back in time, to keep Prioress from being killed. In the comics, Jahpo was really hurt with her passing. This Prioress and the one in the comics are very different, but, that's just my fan theory. Great review.

    My only complaint is the CGI, it looked bad, like it shows that this was super low budget for me. But that’s okay. Nothing is perfect.
    This might be an hot take and unpopular opinion but i kinda wished this was a animated series replicating the comics art style, like how Invincible did which was really good.

    I watch the entire season one and I was extremely disappointed. I was surprised to find that Brad Pitt was one of the producers. Why would you greenlight something so successful in the comics only to have a flop by spending as little money as possible on every aspect of production from the writing to the casting. Were there some good moments? Yeah some of the acting was really really good but most of it was kind of generic. As were the shots and the lighting and other aspects of cinematography. Special effects were almost nonexistent. The biggest problem was the lousy script which throughout all the interesting parts of the comic book. I’ll tell you a secret that I’m sure you already know filmmakers are kind of like gangster rappers. They steal bits and pieces from everybody and stitch it all together without any concern for logic, rules or even aesthetics. They have contempt for the source material. What are the biggest problems in Comics right now is that they have been hiring r
    writers Who don’t understand the comic book medium at all. So why is a comic book so good in the TV show so bad? I think ultimately what happened is the creators got offered a deal and they took the money. I doubt the show is going to come back for a second season. I mean they canceled raised by wolves, Jupiter’s Legacy., cowboy bebop, Much more entertaining and still they got canceled.

    People aren't calling it woke for the female leads. They are calling it woke because of how explicitly diverse it is (very on the nose) and how within 10 minutes it pointed out racism. The people behind the show said they made it because of the representation in the writing. Around when Paper Girls was written there was a big push for representation and diversity in the entertainment industry and including that was seen as an easy win for expanding your audience. At this point it has turned relatively toxic. I would say that Paper Girls came out at an unfortunate time.
    It's also very frustrating that the only way a company will willingly have everything match the source material is when that source material fits their agenda.. if it does not then they "reimagine" everything to fit their agenda.
    Perhaps the source material isn't necessarily woke, having a different reason for representation, but the show itself was incredibly woke in the first 10 minutes (at which point I dropped it).
    I used to not care but these large entertainment companies are pushing it so hard that I now have a visceral reaction.

Look at the following that show garnered after season 1 compared to this show. No one is complaining about "wokeness" in ST or claiming it's a rip-off of another show or movie that takes place in the '80s.
      Like, this is the '80s we're talking about. Attitudes toward racial minorities, girls and women, and gay people were not exactly stellar. The show includes a lot of great, fun things from the '80s (music, movie references, fashion, etc.), but it also addresses not so great things from that decade like racism and homophobia. It helps when they go to 2019 and they see how general attitudes toward marginalized groups have vastly improved. They do it in a smart way, too.
