"Swinging for the lake" was a perfectly fair way to describe what Morel did in that AB.
The first two pitches were well outside the zone, and he didn't even flinch at them. Good. Now it's 2-0. Pitch #3 was a hard "strike to corner" breaking ball that Morel swung at and missed. Not sure why he swung at that pitch anyway, but it had a good portion of the plate before breaking to hit the edge of the zone. Fair play; still up 2-1.
The 2-1 swing was egregious. Another hard slider and Morel absolutely went at least 90% Javy on the swing (he didn't fall down).
The next two pitches are exactly where the previous two have been; on the outside black of the plate, tailing away from Morel. On neither of these pitches (with 2 strikes) did Christopher do anything even close to "shortening his swing", trying to just poke a game-tying single into RF or RCF. He was absolutely swinging for the downs.
Jessie Rogers' question was absolutely fair, and Counsell was out of line.
I probably could have articulated better on the show, but was trying to make point that it's the phrasing of the question IMO, that Counsell has to defend his player on. "Swinging for the lake" is a deliberately pejorative way of phrasing that question. Jesse knows that too. I think the discussion of situational hitting is a fair one, but would also say that not every player is capable of shortening their swing like that with such success. Morel's trying to hit the ball hard, that's his main skill.
Again, I think the larger discussion is totally fair, but Jesse knowingly asked a question in a manner that I just don't think Craig is going to respond to. It feels like it's dogging the player and not just trying to get information, IMO.

I agree that at times (like this) media members ask questions in deliberately provocative and unprofessional ways. I just wonder if Rogers had asked his question something like "Morel's 7th inning AB today appeared to be one where he didn't have a great approach, especially with 2 strikes. Trying for a HR rather than shortening his swing and trying to get the base hit that would tie the game. What's your opinion on that AB?" that Counsell would give the usual pat, boring answer.
I agree that Craig should be protecting his players; I'd just like to hear something other than 'the guys are trying hard, just have to get that run in" etc. I guess it's just a matter of perspective.
@@d.j.8059 100% agreed. I genuinely think if Jesse had phrased it that way, Craig answers in a totally different manner.
