OMG -I know this comment is way later than your video, but I have started this gorgeous knit and like others found the shoulder/neck increases a little confusing in the pattern instructions - the first instruction shaping neckline was very clear (eg Step 1 (RS), Step 2 (WS), Step 3 (RS) - until - the turn. It wasn't made clear that you are making a GSR and then later, knitting the stitch after the created GSR. I found a great you tube tutorial showing how to do this balloon sweater increase/turn titled 'Opstart pa Ballon Sweater' by Kimmie Munkholm. Thank you for your instructions also! It made things clearer. Nga mihi.
I LOVE petite knit patterns, they are truly my favorite. I’ve been working through her patterns for kids, but I really should just do one for myself, especially with some nice great quality materials. I usually use more sensible materials for washing for the kids items (think cotton, super wash, gasp acrylic), but I’d really love to do a wool/merino/alpaca/cashmere option for myself.
Very nice sweater. I found your channel today and I’m really happy I did. As I live in Australia and it’s nice to see someone from our neck of the woods. Thanks for going through your project with us on how you made this sweater. Could you please let me know the size you made and the amount of yarn you used. I am new to knitting and when it comes to purchasing yarn for sweaters I get a bit confused. Also, is it possible for you to recommend yarn suppliers closer to us. Thanks🙂
Thank you Nicole! Howdy from across the ditch ☺️ this one I made an XS which used 2098m of yarn, in total held double, if you are on ravelry, check out my project at there are lots more notes in there 🥰 I don’t know many Australian suppliers but Skein Sisters stock the Fyberspates Cumulus and have some great base yarns you could pair with. Let me know how you get on!
Thank you for this video. I am making the sweater too, and dis unravel it three times already. Your neckline/ribling looks wider than the pattern says. What did you do? I have looked on your notes on Ravelry, but can't find it there. (I added masks as three increases in the pattern. But now I don't know I can just follow the rest, or if it will be too short). I hope you understand what I mean. You made a beautiful sweater. Thank you for this video. Hope you can help.
Hey There, I think my neck is wider as it was the way it blocked out, if you want it to be tighter, you could try a twisted rib? I think I also didn't do as many rounds of the rib so it's not sitting as high. The yarn you have chosen will play a part in the way it sits with the end product :) good luck!
Hi there. Great to see your clip. I’ve just downloaded this pattern. I’ve knitted for years but can’t begin to understand the way this is written!! Like, where are the cast on instructions?! The pattern says Yolk, does it actually mean neck?! Maybe it’s just me! I’ve made other top-down jerseys with no problem. Also are the vids in English?
Oh yay! But also, oh dear! Ok, so the cast on is an Italian Cast on, you'll need to find a video for how to show you if you aren't familiar with that one. The neckband is done first and then you start to knit the front and back, plus the shoulder 'seam' stitches working the shaping, you sort of 'pinch' a stitch from the front each time you go back and forth (check out my Ravelry project for some more notes on that) then, you knit the back (back and forth with purl rows), leaving the front, then you knit the front (back and forth in the same way). Lastly, you join to work in the round and you'll have the arm hole gaps. I hope that helps! Her videos are not in English, but, I found them helpful anyway as you can sort of get the idea and watch what she is doing. Good luck! xx
Hi, I’m with you. Have purchased the pattern, the yarn and done the neck basque, including the Italian cast on, which I had never heard of and took a whole weekend to learn. So, now up to knitting he rest of the sweater and my head is abuzz. Yes cannot at all work out how to proceed. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.
Apart from German short rows and Italian cast on, is there any other techniques used which might be a bit tricky for advance beginner/intermediate? I love PetiteKnit patterns and have bought couple of them and they all turned out so good! I’d love to try this pattern but the 5 star difficulty rating is deterring me from buying the pattern :/ I love how your sweater turned out!! 💖
Nothing else! Honestly, if you’ve made a few of hers already then you should be fine. I added some technical notes to my ravelry project for a part that initially stumped me. The difficulty is more in construction so those notes may help 🖤 thank you for watching!
can the ballon sleeve technique be adapted for other sweaters? i am wanting to try it on a cardigan, where i want the sleeves to have more of a cuffed balloon look
Sorry Mindy! I wrote you a long, detailed reply but for some reason it didn't get posted :( yes you absolutely could use that sleeve styling in any pattern, just keep in mind that it will change your yarn usage so allow for a little extra. I would suggest that you do a few of the decreases within the pattern until it's the right size for you (if required) trying it on will help, for me it's around 57 stitches or so with this same yarn/gauge. Then knit straight until you reach the length of your wrist. From here, do your decreases every 7th stitch (or the closest multiple of 7 to what you have on your needles). Next row, no decreases, next row, decrease every 6th stitch and so on until you have the required number of stitches for your cuff. Make your cuff a few cm's longer than usual so that the 'puff' part is more pronounced. Hope that helps! Happy knitting :)
@@FoxesBlogKnits thank you so much! i am trying to knit the JW anderson harry styles cardigan and its the first ever piece im attempting! your videos have been so helpful with yarn recommendations ! for a beginner, is it easy to decrease a 1*1 rib stitch? or should i stick to a normal knit stitch?
@@mindymalik1999 Oh that makes my day! So glad it's been helpful... so what you would usually do is create all the decreases in the stitch that you are making the sleeve in, then once you are done, go straight into the 1x1 rib on the next round and continue with the cuff, if that make sense? Looking at the pattern, it seems like the pieces are patched together for the sleeve and then the cuff is made afterwards. I don't think there is a way to do that without it looking a little messy but I found this forum post that may be of some help? forum.knittinghelp.com/t/how-to-decrease-in-a-1x1-rib/70532 Good luck!
@@FoxesBlogKnits Hi. Your sweater looks beautiful. When you talk about the decreases, do you mean that you knitted the sleeves with the same stitch count that was picked up and only did the decreases right before the 1x1 ribbing? Thanks.
Hi Kate, no I haven't actually! I'd be keen to try it though, I tend to lean toward alpaca blends more however as I find them softer, let me know what you think though! :)
Hi Jessica... Catherine again... are the sleeves for the ballon sweater following the Raglan increase? The pattern is so confusing... can I first make a Raglan first?? Please link me to a simpler pattern I start with... am not a real beginner but am also not advanced... am learning...
Hi Catherine, no, just the shoulders. I’d reckon end trying her Novice or No Frills sweater (the No Frills link is in the description of my FO video) before the balloon sweater, the balloon is a much more advanced pattern. You can do that one next instead. Good luck!
Thanks Catherine! There's a link to the Ravelry download in the description, or you can buy it from her website, here: petiteknit.myshopify.com/collections/adult/products/balloon-sweater?variant=7375351775287 happy knitting!
Hi again it’s Catherine. I purchased the pattern from petit knits but I can’t understand it at all😭no step by step instructions... is there anyway to access a video! How can you help... the pattern is too complex for a beginner... thanks again..,
Oh no! In my review I did feel that it was more for an advanced beginner if you have made one or two top down sweaters before, or if you were comfortable with the techniques then you should be ok. The pattern is step by step but I'd recommend watching some of the videos specific to those techniques so when you get to them you are confident, or watch them as you need to do them. If you are getting stuck on the way the short rows are worked in the back and the front is picked up, I have some notes within my Ravelry project that may be useful, these stumped me a little! www.ravelry.com/projects/foxesblog/balloon-sweater also added them below: Step one is worked as a half, step two a full row, and step three another half and all together they are a full row (pearl and knit) with each knit, pinching a few stitches from the front (one each side) so you eventually shape the back and front. **I imagined it like the below:** 1: (one half of the row)| _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ / _ 2: ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ 3: _ / _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _| (other half of the row) | = Start of round marker _ = Knit stitch ^ = Pearl / = Turn Also if you imagine the shoulder rows like a Raglan sleeve but with just one on each side, rather than two, that might help. I'll pop some links to the videos that I found helpful below: Tubular cast on: ruclips.net/video/agTSFhO_P_E/видео.html German short rows: ruclips.net/video/QoScYNW9LrU/видео.html Left and right leaning increases: ruclips.net/video/lsJndA4LzR8/видео.html Picking up the sleeves: ruclips.net/video/qQfoqDWpJco/видео.html I really hope that helps you!

Aw, thanks Sharon! All my WIPs/news etc are in my monthly podcasts if you want to check those out, my FO videos are just that specific project, wasn’t sure everyone wanted me to waffle on quite that much! Keep it bite size ;)

Haha, nothing wrong with acrylic where needed ;) definitely make something for yourself! It would be almost criminal not to ;) thanks for watching!
I will add this pattern on my to do list, currently making the balloon cardigan version and so excited to finish it ❤️🙌
I'm making the cardigan version at the moment too! The sweater is really lovely, a lot less purling ;) thanks for watching!
I am amazed that you can make a sweater in two weeks. It takes me two weeks to make a hat hahaha, love your videos
Haha, it takes a lot longer than that now we’ve had our baby! Not knitting anywhere near as much, hopefully soon 🤞🏼
Beautiful sweater! Looks nice on you!
Thank you Belinda! So lovely of you to say x
