I've seen him Live since 78'. He fully entered and inhabited the Persona, the Protagonist of each Song. Many were left slack-jawed to his earnest Transformations.
Great reaction Rory! I was worried there, I might have done too deep of a cut lol, but he always is a very theatrical performer, it started with his days with Genesis. The song is about his encounter with an Apache Indian, and his initiation to his Tribe which involves being bitten by a rattlesnake, and left on a mountain (San Jacinto) to survive. The song tells of the mans hallucinations and ties to his heritage and the encroachment of the white man on their culture and land.

I've seen Gabriel 7 times in concert since this era, they are pretty much above and beyond any concert i've been to, and I attend many.
His theatrics started long before. More quirky maybe, but he started it in the 70s with Genesis. It helped put Genesis on the map then. I wanted to send a Paypal request, but it doesn't work on my end - yet.
