  • Central Milan has an intensive traditional street tram system. There are modern articulated and low floor trams by Fiat, ADtranz and Ansaldo-Breda, but the stars of the show are 200 Peter Witt inspired trams, designed by the undertaking and built by several manufacturers between 1927 and 1930. These trams have been in continuous service ever since, improved and modernised over the years, so they are not preserved museum pieces, but they do form part of the city’s heritage. They are an integral part of the city’s impressive public transport system.
The track is “Italian” standard gauge 1445mm / 4ft 8 7/8in at 600 v dc. Pantographs gradually replaced trolley poles in the 1970’s.
