  • Valencia’s urban rail system started by adapting the local lines of Spain’s meter-gauge rail network. There are currently ten lines on the MetroValencia map: six metro lines and four light rail tram lines. The tram routes are mostly surface level, with segregated light rail and tram-only streets. L4 opened as Spain’s first “modern tramway” in 1994, followed by L6 and L8, the “trams to the beach”. Work on L10 started in 2007 serving the new City of Arts & Sciences, but paused for eight years due to lack of money, and the line only finally opened in May 2022. Two further lines are currently under construction. All the tram lines are meter gauge with 750vDC overhead line, and the trams are air conditioned.
Valencia’s unusual mix of local rail, metro, tram and bus seems to suit this elongated modern beach-city perfectly.

A well-maintained tram can last indefinitely. Old age is not of itself a reason for replacing something. The longer a vehicle is in service, the more the environmental costs associated with production are dissipated over time. This is one of the reasons why electric trams are more sustainable.

@@michaelinlondon Maybe it's Spanish or Valencian regulation, but trams can't here can't be in use for more than 25 years, so the 3800 series has to be retired, because of that the company is hiring Stadler to build the new 4500 series.

@@josumds1896 That's a pity, and very wasteful. Elsewhere in Europe there are plenty of cities with well maintained trams that are way over 25 years old still giving good service.
