Brother Dan, I was once told that I had to be ready to play a "shout run" for 30 min. I'm sure he was exaggerating, but I have played for several minutes. It's a must if one wishes to play gospel bass, live...in church.
Thanks for doing a gospel lesson Dan!! In the gospel community, this is called a “shout” lick. Here in some predominantly Black American churches, we gospel musicians call this a “Bump” or the act of playing this style would be “bumping”. So, the music director may say, “let’s bump in D flat”, and we would play something like your lesson! There you go!
Brother Dan Hawkins, gospel bass guitar instruction, 140 bpm, always good instruction whatever your teaching- keep up the good work!!!! Nice looking bass guitar too
Hi Dan, this bass lesson is really excellent! And it reminds me of the exact same bass line that James Felix played on a gospel song called "Power in the Blood" by the amazing gospel group "Andrae Crouch and The Disciples." Andrae and his group were the creators of this incredible style of gospel music. And in 1978, they were in London to do a show at the Hammersmith Odeon, where they recorded a live album called "Live in London", and it is one of the best gospel albums of all time. James Felix was the bassist, and on this album he plays his Fender Precision sunburst bass with flatwound strings, and because of his incredible playing and creativity, he received a Grammy. Dan, if you wish to listen to Andrae Crouch's "Live in London" album, you can find a full playlist here on RUclips. You will not regret! It's full of excellent styles for bass such as: soul, funk, walking bass and disco. I highlighted some songs from the Andrae Crouch's "Live In London" album: ================= Power In the Blood ( Gospel ) Well Done ( Disco style ) This is Another Day ( Walking Bass ) Just Like He Said He Would ( Soul / Disco ) I Just Want To Know You ( Funk ) Perfect Peace ( Disco ) You Gave To Me ( Funk / Disco ) Tell Them ( Soul ) "Take Me Back" album: Take Me Back ( Soul ) Praises ( Soul ) You Can Depend on Me ( Jazz / Walking Bass )
Bass players in praise/worship/gospel bands get quite the workout. I did that some years ago and had everything from sight reading, chord charts, mimeographed sheets with chords written on them and the hardest to deal with, ironically, is adapting from a hymnal (written for piano). A player will hone their musical abilities for sure!
I really love gospel, its a lot of fun to play. I found playing to the backing track that my fingers kind of 'wound up' (as the 4x4 community would say) - they got tighter and I started to play harder and had to concentrate on relaxing then it was much better. Travis Dykes is great for gospel lessons as well. I have stiff finger joints so always have to warm up first then it flows better, and this helped a lot. Need some more, Dan. Just saying. :D
Thanks Dan for shining some lights on the Gospel genre! How about some videos with 5-string exercises as well, your tune is in D-flat so looks like ideal for 5-string
Thanks for sharing the foundation for the finger dexterity required to pull off one of these "shouts". Oh I wish how we had churches that played like this back in England. Nevertheless, many thanks sir.

So cool! Thanks for that.
Would love to see more on gospel style bass. I recently started playing in a worship band and need some pointers.
Good job! It’s a real blessing and a workout.
I’d love to do more on it.

Yeah, the session this lesson was from was in Db and I used my 5. I’ll do some more soon.
Really cool. I was going to ask about tips for speed and accuracy, err I think learning this one would help that 😊
Nice one Dan! 👍
Hopefully this will help a bit!

Excellent exercise
Thanks for this... its hard to find really good gospel bass material. If you create a course they (we?) will come. 😄
😂 I’ll do more lessons. What do you want to see/learn?
Thank you for doing a gospel targeted video!
Also, you sound sick - hope you get well soon.
I was! Better now… 🙏🙏
awesome
👍👍👍
Thanks for another amazing lesson Dan
My pleasure!
Thumbnail looks sick on this one
Awesome! Gonna work this exercise just for the practice. Would love to hear you talk more about the Jamerson-inspired theory at play too.
Will do!
