What I like the most about his playing is that he is so humbly letting himself be with the music rather than exagarating or showing off. Nothing gets too personal. It is universal from beginning to end, every second. To be such a great talent and so modest at the same time must require another talent, which I can not even name.
I believe Henri Cartier-Bresson said that once, artists were servants. Although mastery of one’s craft is an achievement, music is to serve people. Matisse said he hoped his paintings would be like a good armchair to the soul who looks at it. The greatest artists don’t forget this.
Thank you. I hate it when a pianist feels the need to display facial contortions and throw their head back in ecstasy. Use your God given talent to play the music to the best of your ability and stop worrying about the camera angle.

richters version is a complete diffrent piece, seriously how can you even compare that with richters way more depth in every single note, his tempo starts slow and then picks up speed fluently (and why the hell would i wanna see someone orgasm over the piano ...)
It's not the first time I listened to Pavane, but somehow I cried listnening to this interpretation. I do not know why. I would not come back to this, because it stirs such a strong emotional response in me. It is so good
Chamayou's recording of Ravel's works is beyond words. Had the chance to hear him in Atlanta a few years ago, and he played an incredible Wanderer Fantasy along with some of Ravel's works-totally brilliant.
He is beautifully at one with this music. What a lovely interpretation of Ravel's Pavane! This is one of the best versions I have ever heard. Thank you.
This sounds so easy; and yet it is not. This is a very fine performance, taken at just the right pace and it's amazing the way the pianist manages to make us hear every note, even the very softest.
I'd say what makes a perfect pianist isn't one that does what they think is the 'perfect performance', but one that hears and understands everything they do wrong and know how to make it right. I am pretty proud that I am at least able to hear what I'm doing wrong when I play. The only problem is I don't know how to fix it :/
How can music be so beautiful? Reminds me of my childhood and walks along the Southbank. Oh how beautiful. I will never tire of listening to this. Bravo.
A wonderful performance, and my thanks for posting it. This piece by Ravel is considerably harder to play than it seems just from hearing it. Congratulations to Bertrand Chamayou!
Beautiful interpretation. It was one of my mother's favourite pieces. To hear it, I see myself approaching the front door with the sun shining on her through the drawing room window as she played this so sensitively. Makes me cry.
I quit comparing various interpretations of the Pavane on RUclips after I found this lovely video. Now his Complete Works of Ravel, which I purchased on iTunes, is my favorite.
This piece has gotten carved onto my heart. I promise to myself that i will one day learn this song, and play it for my whole family, no matter how torn or distant our relationship could be. no song has ever made such an impact on me ever before.
What I especially love about this performance is first the way he uses micro rubato - just like Perlemuter - the phrasing is like someone singing. Very beautiful playing.
I am trying to learn this piece and this the best interpretation I found, full of tempo and sensibility. I enjoy it a lot so may be some day I can play a little like him. Well done.
Interpretazione Magistrale, Unica, Inimitabile!!! Who are the deaf people who gave this a thumbs down? Deaf in one ear and non-hearing out of the other.... it's up there with Richter's reference recording.
It is so nice to see a pianist let the music speak for itself. A beautiful performance does not depend upon the exaggerated facial expressions and/or extraneous gestures so many performers employ these days to make the music all about themselves. Thank you, Mr. Chamayou.
Quite possibly the saddest lament I've ever heard, even in its sweetest moments (4:40) It makes me feel as though all of the sorrows I have forgotten to feel all my life might rise up and overflow
Is it really a lament, or simply a reflection of a person and an era from bygone days? i would suggest that it is more heavily imbued with a wonderful nostalgia rather than a funereal piece.
@@beth9603 After reading the comments on my remark, I would have to say I've come around to your view! In any case it is a lovely piece of music and is a shining example of Maurice Ravel's marvelous musical abilities.

Maybe the best rendition I ever listened to. Such a talent ! Ravel must overjoyed in heaven.
I completly agree with you. Never listened such a magical rendition of this wonderful Pavane. Sorry for my english
Unfortunately I believe Ravel was an atheist. OK nvm this is an amazing piece and performance Mr. Chamayou is one of the best
IMO, Richter's rendition is maybe the best ever. Bertrand's is really good and spot on though.

I think the pianist gave a solid performance to us, as far as his technique allowed, yet I'd wished a "deeper sound"...

Do you people use pedal? I am starting it and I have no indications for pedal …how not to make it sound raw with all those staccatos?
