Likewise, but I was slightly older when I first heard it and am slightly younger (61). I had this record: ruclips.net/video/Gmn0X9a-ywU/видео.html Now I am going to listen to THIS rendition. (Yes, wonderful! Brought tears to my eyes.)
I heard this in my childhood. Over the years fragments of yearning bubbled up, unrecognized but haunting. Only recently, 70+ years later, did I re-experience the music of this piece. I’m thrilled to have found it again.
I found this in hospital waiting for a liver transplant... whenever I felt scared or anxious i listened to this to calm my fears😢😢😢 i am post transplant 58 days but still listen daily to bring calmness and serenity whenever i feel overwhelmed 😕. Beautiful rendition BRAVO 👏👏👏❤❤❤
This piece holds many years of memories...first heard almost 40 years ago. It also provided the peace and serenity needed at that time. I wish you a swift and lasting recovery. Be blessed.
Profound story. Is beautiful how the power of music can touch lives. I hope you are recovering well and this piece will bring you more and more enjoyable days in your life. A big hug from your cello student brother. God bless you
I met a girl in the summer, at the same time I discovered this piece. Now her beauty has been merged with this sounds for the rest of my life. It is an impossible love, but a beautiful one.
Kevin, i dont know if you will read this, im so sorry for the lose of your mom, at such an early age, for me thats heart wrenching to lose your mother, at such an early age, and having to grow up without a mother. may god bless your mother in heaven!, i know, she is looking down at you with her love, and i also know, that she is very proud of you, for the man you have become!!!!. god bless, Louie Vaccaro, las vegas.
What is the connection between the pieces you named? Are you indicating a connection other than the fact that they are all 3 beautiful? You have my interest piqued.
@@hendersin7510 They are indeed all beautiful! Pavane was the Lamp is Low’s reference, and The Lamp is Low was sampled by Aruarian Dance. It’s amazing that this piece reflects musical generations thru time.
If I am sitting here in tears because how beautiful this piece truly is, I cannot imagine how moved I would be seeing it in person. Outstandingly done!
I first heard this playing in a harbour-side cafe, in the beautiful seaside town of St Mawes, Cornwall UK, when only thirteen years of age. I am now seventy seven, and still haunted by its breathless poignancy and melancholy. For me it defines the beginnings of my life, and the ultimate purpose of it.
One of the pioneering pieces of neoclassicism. You can hear the ritornello, the baroque chords, and yet the emotional aspects of romanticism shine through. Amazing performance
Mr. Dodzin, with all due respect- and I mean this sincerely- are you commenting on this piece, Ravel's Pavanne for a Dead Princess? or did you mean to post it for another work & landed here accidentally? Because to my mind, Ravel didn't compose this gorgeous, lush, gentle and deeply felt music in anything close to neoclassical style. I feel that this piece is Ravel in his uniquely impressionist element, gentle & subtle yet with surges of big emotional potency expressed by the wind soloists and later in string section solos, not to mention the awe-inspiring, heaven-like harp! Maybe you were listening to Faure's Masques et Bergamasques, which is truly in neoclassical style. Just wanted to get more clear...
Whenever I listen to this masterpiece , sadness surges up within me In memory of Mrs Miku Ishida who was a kind and heartfelt person to me I'm worried about you who have suddenly lost touch with me My only regret is that I have not heard from you As the days go by , I know that the day to return to Mother Earth is not far away It seems like it was a long time ago that I got to know you So long From Tokyo of the Land of the Rising Sun 🇯🇵
Words cannnot express what one feels when listening to this... It is just another level of human experience . For me this piece is an optimistic journey through darkness.
Can you tell me. I understand that Pavane is "slow waltz" from the Spanish Royal court. Is this interptetation at the original speed Ravel intended? This interpretation is magnifcent.
Ravel's "Pavane" is sooo beautiful. Pure Ravel's Sweetness! Not to mention how wonderful were Ravel's scoring for orchestra ❤ The Pavane's chamber versions are beautiful too. One of the most poignant versions is by Alice Ott at the piano.Alice Ott plays it with such a deep feeling (even more when we know that lively Alice suffers from Multiple Sclerosys...😰). Thx for upload!
Have you heard pavane's version in the show Hannibal? I loved that but can't find it anywhere. It sounds like this video but more slowed down and sounds like echoes of this video
This is in our repertoire this season...I am practicing with this video oooohhh this piece is amazing....you all play it soooo beautifully...I'm in heaven right now...thank you!
What a colorful performance! I knew the moment I heard the French horn that this would be a beautiful interpretation. I especially loved the attention given to the countermelody played by the bassoonist in the B section; I hear it easily in piano performances, but rarely well in orchestral ones. Perhaps a little more blending in the strings in the C section would have been nice (I love to hear the slight sliding in tandem), but that would be my only critique and it’s really a minor one. The ending, though, is perfect... and the silence afterward makes it ever more contemplative. The recording is wonderfully clear, and the instrumentalists and conductor are fantastic musicians. Bravo!
Amazing!! Funny how Gershwin gently stole the “Summer Time” passage for Porgy & Bess. Ravel is one of my favorites and a large inspiration. Awesome orchestra in a fantastic great sounding concert hall that we go to as often as possible
It feels like a rainy day looking out the window looking for streaks of light through the clouds. It feels like the world isnt the way it should be but we keep looking for a glimpse of hope.
Subliminally beautiful! Loved this from the first time I heard it 7 years ago. Today is my first time watching it on RUclips, I felt like I was in the audience.
The sorrowful feeling of this masterpiece is out of this world Without genius Ravel , without pleasure of my life There is something extraordinary in this splendid performance
AMAZING!! Maurice Ravel is one of my favorite composers! And this performance has to rank at the top of all the performances I've heard of "Pavane pour une infante défunte." It is more ... leisurely? ... than a lot of performances, which gives me time to savor the beauty of the orchestration. I must confess to not thinking of this as a "Pavane for a Dead Princess," but in a less morbid way as a "Pavane for a Princess from a Far-Away Time." In all, sterling!
Inspired by this splendid performance , I might have a fantastic dream of Princess Margarita walking in the crowds of Paris , talking to Ravel , This dream is the ultimate in bliss for me . From Tokyo of the Land of the Rising Sun 🇯🇵
If anyone here doesn’t know about Julian Bream and John Williams’ rendition of this on the guitar, just go and listen to it now. It’s absolutely stunning.
My favorite little moment is at 1:01 with the harp arpeggio--just the right little flourish into the pizzicato. Ravel's masterful scoring adds all the little nuanced dynamics and colors just make it such a tender piece. Well played, all.
I'm here because of Hayley Westenra's adaptation of this melody as "Never Say Goodbye" with Giles Martin and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Doubtlessly one of the most poignant and soul-touching pieces ever written.
Bravo! Bravo! There is only one version I like just a little more; Eumir Deodato's four minute version from his 1973 album, Deodato2. Both versions are incredible pieces of music.

One of the very finest performances of Pavane I've heard (for me, probably the best). I assume the unusual spacing of the seated musicians is for "social distancing", owing to health concerns (?)....but could it actually be enhancing the sound quality coming from the stage, making it fuller?
Haha - you're absolutely correct of course. (I just checked it, and the sustained B is 500Hz instead of 493Hz). And thank you! I just spent two hours trying to record solo violin over the top of it and really struggled with tuning in places. Having mentally moved up the A string to match the horn, I was then horribly sharp for the strings later. I triple checked the tuning of two different violins and all was well for the tuning A and opening G and ending D, but went badly wrong in other places. I couldn't work out what has happening - and then I saw your comment!! 😄
I first heard this piece when I was 10. Now I’m 71 and the enchantment lingers. This is a superb performance!
Exact same story here, my friend!🌺
That's makes two of us! Although I'm 78! Ravel's music is just so bloody...well...right. It's right!

So much skill, so many hours of perfecting their craft - all of them. Music is truly one of the gems of our existence on this planet.
