    Wow!!! I finally got a chance to watch the full video all in one sitting & wow! Just wow! That is great polish isn't it? But only as good as the guy applying it! *wink* I couldn't believe the shine on that thing when you were finished! Just gorgeous!!
    And ha, I chuckled when you thought it was a good idea to put the bridge back in because that would have been me for sure. Get everything put back together & end up with 'extra parts' when I'm done. In fact, I'm the queen of extra pieces... done that so many times...lol!
    Your hand does amazing friend, considering what you're dealing with plus slamming it in the truck door? I know you're impatient to get back to better, but you have to give yourself more credit - you sound amazing!!
    I loved the serenade by the pooches at the end too...you need to get them a contract with a recording company. They sound better than a lot of 'singers' I hear on radio now. =D

So I bought this tube and been using it (the same tube) ever since! lol It;s amazing what a little bit it takes to get the job done! The Dobro, I walked into a music store to get strings and saw it out on the floor on a stand wish a $900 tag on it, picked it up and it sounded wonderful but the strings were rusty and the setup was awful! I played it a few minutes until the store owner came back where I was. I had already checked to see if I had that much money with me or not and didn't have, so I told him "I'll gice you $700 right now take it or leave it" and he immediately said SOLD! lmao! He knew it needed setup bad and rather than pay me for the setup he sold me the guitar! haha! It's the same one you hear on the Wolf Creek cd.

      Don't you wonder sometimes if people even know what they have in their possession? I've heard so many people say they get good guitars at barn sales or flea markets for little to no money. How come I'm never that lucky! *quirked eyebrow*

    Hi Randy. You appear to screw the spider to cone screw very tightly before stringing the guitar. I have a Crafters of Tennessee round neck resonator, and the first and second unwound strings have always sounded very harsh. I only give the cone screw about a full turn after seating the screw. After watching the video, I decided to take the risk and give my screw another full turn and half. Fixed my issue on first 2 strings! How do you decide how many turns on the screw, and not damage the cone?

    It looks like the cone diameter is a little too big for the routed out ledge that it sits in. It appears that it doesn't move around and that will limit the sound - will compress its soul. You can use a router to make the hole a bit wider in diameter or use scissors to trim away a little bit of the lip. If you put the cone adjusting screw back in the cone after removing the spider, you can remove the cone that way rather than with a toothpick. Also, the cone looks like it's been through hell and if it were replaced, it would probably give you a bigger sound.

There is no cure for the disease and believe me it's a musicians nightmare! All I can do is try to learn to play with different technique, retraining my hands all over again the docs said is the only chance of hope I have, so I've been doing that. Then September a year ago one of my grandsons accidentally closed a car door on my left hand! Didn't break anything but sure didn't do it any good and set me back another year.

    Nice job Randy! I just bought a 1990 OMI Dobro and it needed every bit of your instructions for clean up and re stringing. I used regular Elixir strings does it make a lot of difference using Reso strings? My dobro has a solid maple saddle. Should I upgrade to the Ebony/maple? I thought this would be louder and I have some concerns on string height. Thanks again!

    • @RandySchartiger
      @RandySchartiger  7 лет назад

      Making sure the cone is clean and spider (assuming it's not a biscuit set up) fits snugly and flat around the edges of the cone can make all the difference in the world in volume and tone. Elixir strings never did sound very good on my Dobro guitar, I think because of the coating dampens them, I've found that Martins MSP lifespan strings sound much better, granted they don't last as long but being treated they do last longer than a normal string. Yes, Ebony/maple saddle would probably help a good bit. Thanks for checking out my video!

      Thanks for the advice Randy. I have been watching a lot of your videos. I have always wanted to learn how to do guitar set ups. Seems like you can never find a good set up guy these days. I ordered a string action ruler to check the Dobro string height. Seems like the release is fine on the neck. Maybe some bridge adjustment. I will look at that when I replace it with the ebony/maple.

    I found his very interesting. I just got my first reso...a Regal RC 51, a tri cone. Not the best, not the worst. My understanding of the mechanics of these guitars is limited, so forgive a potentially rudimentary question. How does one approach the action? Is it all about nut and saddle cut? Or do you lay veneer perhaps in that slot where the saddle sits? I haven't popped the hood on mine cuz im from the "if it aint broke, don't mess with it" crowd. But im very curious about that point and google surprisingly doesn't always answer a direct question.

    • @RandySchartiger
      @RandySchartiger  8 лет назад +1

      Yep nut, saddle and neck relief to adjust action, there is sometimes a split saddle (such as this guitar) that sets on a biscuit or spider, sand bottom of saddle to lower, if action needs raise I'd recommend buying a new one and sanding down instead of putting spacers or anything under them.

    • @stevenedwards4470
      @stevenedwards4470 8 лет назад

      I was afraid of that. I know a veneer boost would work against the sound. Inconvenient 20s technology but im having fun. Thanks for responding. Id really like to see you noodle some more on the Dobro. Keep up the good work. Enjoy your channel

    The cone is collapsed because the spider screw was too tight. It’s supposed to only be tensioned one and 1/2 turns after it seats max.

    I found a Hawaiian Reso locally...really old...I thought I'd check it out...anything that I need to be aware of regarding Resos other than what your vid said to look for when buying used?

    • @RandySchartiger
      @RandySchartiger  7 лет назад

      the cones in some of the old reso are notorious to collapse over time, buying used I would definitely check the cone even if the guitar sounds pretty decent, if collapsed, it's amazing how much better a new name brand cone like Beard cones can make them sound.

      It takes a while to come to a decision but I've decided that I want something without potential problems...I'd rather buy newer. Would you recommend some brands/price point over others...what price point can you notice a quality difference?

      Someone lost it before I got into the guitar, I've talked to a few people who leave them out they said it vibrated and made unwanted noise.

    If U don't have any Polish-For the Metal Parts, I just take them to the Kitchen Sink and get a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser [cut in 1/2] and Moistened and Squeezed Out Well, and wipe all that Down and Dry with a Terrycloth Cup Towel.
    That Cleans it Up Shiny-New, too.
    With the Exception of Surface Wear-Like U Mentioned.
    In Between Disassembly, I take the Guitar Outside-Turn it Upside Down, and Shoot Canned-Air all around in there...Just watch, that U don't get any of the Dust/Crap that Blows Out in Your Eyes-There can be a lot Fly Outta' There!!!

    What made you stop playing banjo? Too hard of a fight? I can see some ppl would be more inclined to favor one instrument over another.

    • @RandySchartiger
      @RandySchartiger  7 лет назад +1

      banjo was my main instrument from age 4 up until around 30 years old, I stopped playing it because of focal dystonia in both of my hands, no one knew what it was back then, I just new something was going very wrong with my hands, I can barely play guitar because of it and the shaking sometimes is uncontrollable. heres a link to the only banjo video I have up, it was around 1986, thats about when focal dystonia was starting. ruclips.net/video/pPBAIs2Tm9I/видео.html

    You implied that there is no difference between spun and pressed cones. All of the expert opinion in the resonator guitar community would disagree strongly with this.

    • @RandySchartiger
      @RandySchartiger  5 лет назад

      the material the cone is made of is way more important then whether it was pressed or spun, there have been a lot of tests on making the cones out of different material and gauging different thickness'.
