I think people from American Idol would have gotten such a backlash from the fans of the show. Fans knew she was going to win and Idol used the excuse, she missed the plane, as the reason, she wasn't competing. Idol didn't want that backlash.
Robin Roberts tried to make it dramatic and it wasn't. Carrie won it at that first audition and everybody knew it. Idol didn't know how to handle someone that good. And didn't have a way to make Carrie the winner, then. But in a way, it helped Carrie. It ended up that Simon, Paula and Randy were Carrie's teachers. Carrie corrected all of her mistakes. I know Carrie's mother, Carole didn't like Simon's bluntness toward Carrie, but Carrie used it to her advantage and her performances were getting better.
Back then, the ones who didn't like Cowboy Casanova was Nashville brass. Cause once again. Carrie turns a sassy song into a blockbuster hit. At least now, when Carrie breaks out a sassy song. Nashville brass leaves it alone.
Fans proved that, there was nothing wrong with how Carrie was dressed for "Cowboy Casanova". Actually, the way Carrie was dressed, she was making a point to that guy. You aren't going to tell me how to dress, which pissed him off.

Carrie was on tour and Thanksgiving game happen to fall on day off, which is why she was able to do that game. Otherwise, she was on her way to another tour date after Thanksgiving.
