  • Yuan-ti call themselves vrael olo (which means "favored ones"). The yuan-ti come in several distinct castes or breeds and while they tend to lair in remote, ancient, hidden temples, they can be found anywhere, infiltrated deeply into human society.
    They have long been an important monster race in Dungeons and Dragons.

    Oh, forgot to mention, Yuan-ti make a variety of special oils that produce a colorful, aromatic smoke when burned, called Osssra, and it is something that anyone who has experience of Yuan-ti will recognise the moment they smell it. (there are lots of different Osssra oils, they all have different names and are cherished by Yuan-ti who can relax for very long periods of time, watching the swirling colours in the air, tasting the scents with their tongue, Yuan-ti are immune to poison, so great caution should be exercised when burning an unfamiliar osssra oil).

    Years ago before i got into art school I created a bunch of sci-fi comics and i had a reptilian species that were kinda like neo-egyptian themed futuristic geneticists with a powerful empire.
    I lost the old comics but ive reinvented them in my homebrew world as an offshoot of Yuan-Ti now.

    I have a player that's wanting to play as yuan-ti half blood mage hunter that's not part of their society, they have a magical knife that helps explain why they're separated from their culture, they have lived a long time but whenever they die they're knife brings them back to life sometimes this process makes memories cloudy or fade away all together, the knife is also self-conscious and always has the same level as the character, it's always interesting when you have the same race on two sides of the same conflict, especially when the conflict has many many races involved in it

    There is a god, called Anantashesha. A serpent, the king of serpents who was said to lie beneath Vishnu in the cosmos. A six headed snake god, he would linger past the end and gaze upon the darkness past the end of time. it was said that when the light of the universe finally goes out, all that would be left is Anantashesha. I don't know, i just thought i'd throw that out there since i thought it would be a cool idea to try and implement that into a campaign, either using this god as a patron for a warlock, or a god to be worshiped by a cleric or paladin yuan-ti character.

    What about good Yuan ti.Is it possible?I mean...would there be one Yuan ti that decides that."The way my society carries out acts of cannibalism is wrong and I will not be part of it."I mean I am sure he or she would be hunted down with no mercy and so said Yuan ti would flee to the lands of some other race.I am a big fan of the monster who goes against its fellow monsters ways and somewhat reforms it self.

      A thing to keep in mind is that, unlike Vulcans in Star Trek, who have strong, violent emotions under constant control.. Yuan-ti have no emotions, they don't do evil because they hate, they do it because they don't care about anyone, or anything, other than themselves, and it's not like they are narcissists either, they just do whatever helps them survive, and they will exploit the emotions of others because it is a proven method to control emotional beings. So, is it possible to be a good Yuan-ti? For sure, the process of their transformation and methods of reproduction mean that there is physical mutation all the time, and there is no reason why a Yuan-ti could not be born with emotions, and empathy.. it could well be that they were born from an overlooked clutch of eggs after a Yuan-ti lair was slaughtered by a rival monster group, a band of heroes, or a ritual that went badly wrong (such as a demon summoning) and in that batch of hatchlings, one or two were different.. this was never detected by the Brood Guards and they somehow managed to escape murder by their fellow hatchlings to escape into the wild, perhaps they were raised by a ranger, druid, fey creature, or frontier family, who never knew what race they were, but could see they had a good heart.
      That being said, I would be sceptical about an Abomination or Malison being born this way, but a Pureblood.. sure, why not?

      I'm currently playing a "good" Yuan-ti in a campaign with some friends, and I'm finding it quite enjoyable. Zana is a Yuan-ti bard that was born as a human in Yuanti slave stock and was discovered to have talents useful for spying. She earned her freedom when granted the rank of pureblood. She was converted to a pure blood in a dark ritual that cost her the life of her human friends and family. After witnessing this ritual, she rejected yuan-ti society, and left in self imposed exile. Her cold calculating nature comes out in fights that start to go south. Instead of staying to fight, she will abandon the party, (it's happened twice already). However she does return with help for the abandoned party members. Currently this is had led her to a tight spot because there is no time to get help.
      Does her master want her to return to society? I'll have to show this episode to my current GM.

    AJ, you seem to not cover the lifespan, origin, and characteristics for the broodguard. Are those coverable here in a comment?

    • @AJPickett
      @AJPickett  6 лет назад +11

      Broodguards, also known as histachii, are humans who have undergone the ritual of transformation but have been found unworthy, degenerating into hairless, near-mindless reptilian monsters. The yuan-ti employ these wretches as watchers over egg-broods and other demeaning tasks. They first appeared as the histachii in Dragon Magazine #151 ("The Ecology of the Yuan-ti" by David Wellham, 1989). As they are only partially converted humans, they don't have a lifespan any longer than one would expect for a human. The Yuan-ti tend to value the lives of their Histachii slightly higher than common slaves, because the Histachii are fanatically loyal to their masters.. they don't express this as love, of course, they are just super protective and will willingly sacrifice their own lives to save any Yuan-ti. Broodguards are not intentionally created, per se, they are the result of a failed transformation. Wretchlings are created the same way, they are humanoid, scaly, have snake eyes and fangs, patches of fur and are almost mindless savages, driven by a desire to kill. Tainted Ones are the result of the transformation ritual going as planned. Tainted ones are human agents of the yuan-ti who have willingly undergone a ritual of transformation to make themselves yuan-ti, gaining a venomous bite and slight psionic ability. They retain their human appearance but often develop reptilian mannerisms, such as frequently licking their lips or drawing out sibilant sounds as they speak. They first appeared in Monstrous Compendium: Monsters of Faerûn.

    Old video so perhaps this has been pointed out elsewhere, but there is some sub-standard info here. Specifically at 18:18-18:25. At will animal friendship affecting reptiles and reptiles only; you expand that to include dinosaurs as well. Birds are actually feathered dinosaurs, specifically theropod dinosaurs, that managed to survive the impact that caused the extinction of the other dinosaurs. Fairly recent scientific findings and of course D&D is fantasy. But in the interest of giving an as accurate as possible experience, I thought it worth mentioning and perhaps updating this at some point.
    It was my love for dinosaurs that led me to review some of your videos regarding scalykind. I am kind of disappointed at the seemingly widely held notion that reptiles have few/no emotions, and moreover, this point of view has been translated into the fictional races that are based on reptiles and lizards. There are videos on YT here that show crocodiles forming multi-year friendships with humans for example. The idea that reptiles and lizards lack empathy is outdated and largely untrue. I was hoping to find some kind of scaled race besides metallic dragons that reflect this more accurate depiction. I suppose my search will have to continue.
