This is absolutely heartbreaking. I wish this family could have had 5 minutes alone with this freak. I can tell you that this news program is one of the best productions I've ever seen. In America we get 2 minutes of what's really happened and the rest is corporate sponsored propaganda.

Tracie, your comment resonates with me. I often watch Australian productions as I find they are often more raw, or honest, as compared to the smoke, mirrors, white noise, and blatant static of American propaganda.

I watch more news type documentaries from Australia, Canada and England versus those produced in the US. Australia and Canada do a better job reporting on U.S. newsworthy stories than the U.S. does.
I also rarely watch U.S. television shows and movies, since getting access to streaming content 5 years ago when I got a Roku player.

I feel so sorry for the mother, those final words will haunt her the rest of her life. But the truth is, the killer would have found another opportunity to kidnap Chloe. Yup, I agree. Here they release high-risk offenders all the time once their sentences are up. I think they should be put through some kind of program once their sentences are up and then extend their sentence for longer if they are still a high risk. Most high risk offenders commit crimes when out again, even if they have conditions. They're criminals for a reason, "conditions" don't stop them.

Someone needed to tell that judge Pedophilia is NOT a mental illness.
Edit. I have said several times below that since my initial comment, after an interesting discussion here, I have learned that, whether i agree with it or not it IS actually regarded as a mental illness and I now accept that
I believe I'm right in my comments that mental illness does not automatically remove criminal responsibility though. "Criminal insanity" has to be proved and I believe it wasnt in this case. Besides, even if it had been proved in court, there was premeditation and the person presents a significant danger to the public. So, whichever way you look at it, I believe the judge was wrong.

Undoubtedly there was a criminal element in the park and in the area but what I remember most is the many loving (but poor) families just trying to get by. For the most part it was a fun, free place to live and I have lots of lovely memories. My friends and I played in the river behind the park, we played in the pine grove between the park and the bridge, we wandered around alone and unsupervised and never came to harm. I know the world was a different place 50 years ago but children should still be able to play and be safe. This sort of crime against an innocent child should not happen and should not go unpunished. If I had my way, every diagnosed crazy would have two mandatory weekly checks with the police and a psychologist. People go to AA meetings every day to beat/control their addiction but people with mental health have nothing like that. I have BPD and I haven't seen a psychiatrist in months! No one knows If I'm flushing my meds down the toilet. They can run a quick blood test to see if they are in your system. The police the authorities they all know who is crazy, who is on drugs and who is the local crook. The thing is that they are underfunded and understaffed to do the actual safety checks to reduce the harm caused by dysfunctional people in society. So when the judge asks for evidence for keeping crazies locked up, they haven't compiled the evidence correctly or not at all. I mean I'm grateful for not being locked up in a sanitorium for the rest of my life but I need more support than I'm currently getting.

The sparkle in her eyes, the pain in her uncle’s eyes and voices, and the devastation to her mother who is a prisoner of her fears as a result of this horrific tragedy were all absolutely heart wrenching. Hopefully, the laws will change and the mental healthcare professionals will make it their mission to prevent another “Chloe”, as her best friend said in her interview…
The killer’s mother does appear to be intelligent, sincere and empathetic towards Chloe’s mother. However, my view is that even if the mental health system did not take him in when they asked them to, I believe he was living alone and unsupervised + possibly un-medicated (?) at the time. I would sleep at the foot of my child’s bed and have some sort of security protocol in place if I was concerned that he could harm himself or others.
I don’t envy her position, but I do have to wonder if she could have done anything more to prevent this from happening, like more vehemently insisting that the hospital at least put him through a thorough assessment, which he had previously declined. That should be mandatory!
