  • Roof pitch is 4/12. Hoist/ Winch 220Lb direct, 440Lb if a moving pulley was used. Winch was 49 dollars from Homier in 2005 (ie Harbor Freight in Circus Tent for a weekend ) same as 99 dollar HF one Today : www.harborfrei... Cart was built in 2005 for Katrina reroofing. The 6 casters are from Home Depot. Rail/track is offset 2x4, offset is 3/4 inch so cart stays on track. The track back in 2006 had a 20 inch spacing, this is 20 1/4 inch.

    I love it! I think people can be jerks and kind of arrogant in their responses, I am doing a simpler ladder version and using my car to hoist, I like the fact you can get four at a time up in one load. I don't want to kill my back that is why I am going make a hoist. If you are young and don't care about wrecking your back someday or lot stronger than I am, go for it. I am going to enjoy getting my shingles up with ease. THANK YOU FOR THE VIDEO

    Kind of amazing that people dislike shingle loader videos like this because they want to crow about how much they love to lug shingles up a ladder like cavemen.

    thanks 4 posting...nice!
    once l made a wooden skid pulled up a soaped, railed ramp from scrap wood...using rope & 2 pullies pulled it up by hand...since l was too weak to shoulder bundles of textured shingles up a ladder in high humidity/heat 😥...worked well.

    Nice video. I enjoyed it. I think the negative commentators totally missed the point. He did this by his self with wood and a winch. The potential with this gadget could allow a 60 year old man to out pack 10 seasoned Mexicans on a 300 square roof.

  • @samgumorra4605
    @samgumorra4605 4 года назад

    I think I like the use of the tree, and the hoist mount, but making that cart would drive me nuts-- I think I'm going to try to mount at the peak with a snatch pully and use an aluminum two wheel hand truck, which may save a lot of aggravation, and can also be used to roll them around on the roof.

    When I was roofing years ago it cost a $1 a sq. to have them use the boom lift the shingles to the ridge of the roof... I would of paid $2 or $3 a square for the amount of time, effort & energy it saved... An average home back then was between 20 to 30 Square... BUT I do understand the feeling of putting together a project that takes time planning and trial and error to get to the final design..To the guy who built this I'd like to know was it worth the time energy and money after figuring out the final cost of the project compared to the standard gas powered shingle ladder lift.
    Nice project My Friend

      Hi Steve. The roofing cart was first built after Katrina in 2005 . There was a massive labor shortage. I picked up all my 155 bundles of shingles in 2005 with a small pickup, via many loads. ie I bought 3 plus pallets of shingles , 42 per pallet and by hand made many trips. The original ramp was made about all of the scrap lumber in my yard from other homes, thus the cost was nill. ie lumber littered my yard., I have about a gallon of screws from docks that washed up in my yard that I had to take part too. The winch was 49 bucks at the Homier traveling tool sale circus tent. ie I had no boom or way to pay another to place shingles on a roof then. Labor was so tight that the local McDonalds had girls from Russia and Ukraine as workers, since no local help.
      Since then the same cart has been used on several other projects, even used to lift bricks to fix a chimney too. As for a timeline, the first youtube video was uploaded in April 2005. Katrina was late August 2005. The shingle cart was built in the Fall of 2005. Since the cart, winch and winch brace is all done 13 years ago, I just screw together a ramp for another project.
      The store who delivered the shingles in the current 2018 video would not place the shingles on the roof, ie thus this option that everybody has elsewhere was not available. After Katrina, the "stormers" pseudo roofers arrived and would charge 100 to 200 bucks per square and do crap work. They would not even remove sometimes the old shingles, or the old underlayment. After 2 years all the faked in flashing would leak and the cheats were hustling in another state.

    • @srpdesigns
      @srpdesigns 6 лет назад

      3beltwesty I knew there was a great story behind this and I was right... I live in CT and I remember all the "HELP" from other states rushing down there... I remember saying to my wife.. Yeah.. They are going to help... There were going to Rob desperate people... I've seen many jobs like the ones your talking about with the fake flashing ect... I was born into the construction field so I know exactly what its like to have tons of scrap metal, plywood, and framing lumber in the back yard along with all our staging... I've made many projects that I've used on jobs to make it easier.. Some projects only saw a couple of sites and Others I've had for years... As far as all these idiots talking about why didn't you do this or why didn't you do that... They have no way of knowing what the situation was or the reason why you built what you did... That's why I always ask and not criticise without knowing why... Anyway Nice work My Friend.. Lets hope you or anyone else EVER has to endure the disaster that was Katrina
      God Bless

    • @3beltwesty
      @3beltwesty  6 лет назад +1

      JPVegh maybe another roofing shingle vender could be paid to due this. Ie they would not stay around even if paid more. Then I would need to spread all those bundles all over the roof to distribute the load and not break any rafters. Ie hire another as a helper or muck around moving 2900 lbs of shingles by myself. After hurricanes the stormers just throw up a 4x8 piece of plywood and place the entire pallet on the roof and hope the rafters hold. Or they just place the pallet on the roof and hope it holds. Ie they are long gone in another state when one discovers the rafters are cracked. The cart in this video was built after katrina in 2005. Things were so screwed up then that nobody would even deliver shingles. Thus one makes many trips with a pickup truck to deliver 150 bundles to my home. Most stormed just banged out roofing jobs and all roofs then leaked 2 years later around improper flashing or none at all

    • @RedfishInc
      @RedfishInc 6 лет назад

      You set it up as a condition of purchase, I've never had a lumber yard refuse the request. Yes you must spread it out over the roof. Several helpers is a must.

    Overkill for that low of a roof. Can divide each packet into 3 and stack them on the roof then get on roof and spread them out. Probably get it done faster than building your sled.

    • @3beltwesty
      @3beltwesty  2 года назад

      Sled was built after hurricane Katrina of 2005. The winch was 49 bucks from Homier sort of like Harbor Freight stuff in a circus tent that travels to cities.
      So the sled and winch gets used over and over on jobs. The 2x4 track material gets reused in other places. In a recent small job of 9 squares i just took up half pack of shingles or full ones depending on what was needed to save the back. Ie easier to carry up full packs in morning than when hot with 119 heat index
      In the original project the sled was used for i had to replace sections of decking and did not want all the shingles on the roof at once. Ie had 150 packs of shingles.
      A contractor after hurricane Elaina in 1985? Put too many shingles in one spot and cracked 3 rafters. So not crazy about pressing my luck with too much load

    good deal after charlie in 04 i had to pick up and carry bundles in 95 degree 80% humidity
    only had to do 1/4 of roof 13 sq due to improper install by builders crew worst part was getting the bundles up the ladder it was before my stenosis operation so i could only handle part bundles .rest of roofing was hot and hard but doable and survived irma
    but roofers after charlie had too many illegals working they shingled over holes our dryers in this area vent through roof . and they cut the vents off and shingled over them some pluming vents real mess women at work could not get her clothes to dry servic guy found the dryer vent shingled over. cannot believe the price of shingles now i know inflation byt they almost tripled in price shortly after charlie and next yr Katrina and barely went down when oil dropped. smart idea but my sugestion for anyone doing similar bring one load up shingle then go for another load so not going up and down the ladder so many times
