If you are new here - welcome! We are the Krocks, a couple who started out at 800 pounds combined in June 2018. We switched to a whole food plant-based diet, and over the past 15 months, together we have lost nearly 300 pounds.
We just celebrated our 8th wedding anniversary on November 5, 2019 and we thought it would be a great time to reflect on our relationship and discuss how weight loss has impacted our marriage. Check out the video to hear us discuss this and more!

👍🏻 Happy Anniversary! My advice for someone doing it alone is education. Whatever direction is most interesting. Nutrition, health, cultural background of foods, etc. when I started learning more about how animals are treated and what industrial farming is doing to the planet 🌎 I am motivated. My husband loves the food, but I do it all. Then I have to remember it is not just about me. It’s about everything really!

I'm doing this adventure alone while still feeding my son and husband an Omni menu. For breakfast, I also eat the berries from the what you eat in a day video. Some days my son eats that with me, other days I cook him a separate breakfast. For lunches I batch prep oven roasted veggies and eat them as a wrap with your oil-free hummus. For dinner I try to make compliant recipes for me that go along with what they're eating. When they have spaghetti, I have zoodles with marinara. On Taco Tuesdays, I make jackfruit tacos for me. This helps to still eat our meals as a family. It's nice that y'all have each other, but it's absolutely possible to do it while still feeding the rest of your family a standard diet. You have to make a commitment to your self and just stick with it. It's important too to remember no one is perfect. We all have slips and setbacks. That's ok too. You just have to pick yourself back up.

I live by myself and have found my biggest challenge to be eating for reasons other than hunger. I love the taste of food and eat for many reasons. I love the acronym HALT - are you Hungry, Angry, Lonely, or Tired? I would add upset or bored to that list.
I find it helps to be aware of my mood when I reach for food and to journal. And to watch inspiring content like Krocks! Also hiking. It is hard to eat crappy food when you are out hiking in a hilly forest! And bonus, it feels good and sweaty and right.
    Just my thoughts.💜

I tried to do it a couple of times when my son lived at home and it was impossible. He moved to college and it's been a snap. I think that radical shift in my life made a huge difference. It was so much easier not to have the influence and the food that my son was eating. I did not have the discipline to not eat what was right in front of me. But I really think the lifestyle change also was key. My son has autism and I had to schedule therapy, etc for him, and that all stopped when he left. You'd think having all that free time would make things worse, but I had lots of time to cook so it worked out. I've lost 39 lbs since 9/1.

You guys are adorable, happy anniversary!
I had the same thing going on with my wedding and engagement ring- there was an entry error when my husband ordered my engagement ring so it had to be resized before I even got it. They had told me a ring could be resized twice before it would have to be totally rebuilt. So I didn't want to resize it after I gained weight and just went without the last 3 years. Just recently, I fit into my engagement ring again. It's certainly my favorite non-scale victory yet!

The "better or for worse" is one scary vow as one does not know how bad it can get. My husband and I have this year celebrated 44 years of married life. It's been tough and weight issues involved there too. We finally did some weight loss together. We are both down 55 lbs. and he's come along rather kicking and screaming even though he has realized it's likely have saved his life.
I'd like it if he'd investigate how to make what we are doing better. It has put so much on my shoulders and it just is exhausting at times for me. Right now I have a major migraine, we ate Chinese food and I think there was a ton of MSG in it. I am very dedicated to plant-based but if I am not in the room or we are out at a restaurant, my husband is a chameleon. He has high blood pressure and we are going to get chewed out because he has been so off-track with it. He really does not understand how important something like BP can be. So that is on my shoulders.
It is hard when someone you love doesn't love themselves enough to want to not become a burden either to you or your children together. I am not the most unselfish person on the planet but I am fairly altruistic. I think with my worst migraine yet, I am not quitting, but hope the doctor has some good input tomorrow. My husband is one who needs meds because he will not stop all the margarine, now he is drinking Smirnoff coolers too. He just needs a pill to fix everything. I watched my parents both getting dementia taking the pills which make up for a total lack of self-discipline. I just feel hopeless with him, but I love him. He can do such wonderful things at times also. I don't want to be alone. I want him to not just live but thrive. I'd like to spend some of our retirement enjoying our lives and not spend it with orthopedic issues because we don't care enough about ourselves or the other to stop being a burden.
Sorry, if I sound less than optimistic. I do love watching your show, I love the look of Brian's eyes when he looks at Jessica. I really wonder how that would feel if my husband could see me like that instead of the TV.

    • @LiveLifeLori
      @LiveLifeLori 4 года назад +9

I'm in the same boat. It's so hard watching your partner not care about their health, and also wondering how my retirement will be? Pushing my husband in a wheelchair and not living my true life, or travelling the world alone cuz he can't keep up? Do not take all that burden on yourself and let it sabotage your health. You can only do so much then you just do you and hope he sees how awesome you're being and your new health will shine through. I really wish my husband was on board with this lifestyle too, but that's not the card i'm dealt with right now :( I admire everyone who is on the journey with their partner. Good luck to you.

You can only do for yourself. Nobody could have done it for you no matter how much they love or care for you.
Keep on doing what is right for you and he will see the change.
Ensure that he sees you embracing it and not cheating and you will earn his respect.
No more Chinese I'm sure they're cooking it in oil which I know there are vegan oils but if you're eating for health and not for namesake it will change the way you eat and you won't let him take you to eat Chinese. I mean that in the nicest way possible. Eating food that is not prepared at home should only be in emergencies otherwise we should prepare 100% of our food that we eat and that is definitely more strict than most people are willing to attempt, but if you're eating for health it's the only way to guarantee the ingredients

I'm the only plant based/vegan one in the house, and my hubby is a huge meat eater, and not a fan of anything healthy. He sometimes eats what I make, but then adds meat or cheese or etc...But honestly I'd say it's very hard when doing it alone - but it's not a deal breaker. I have to do it for myself. So I make it work, as there isn't an alternative. I want this lifestyle, so I'm making it happen regardless how hard it is. I try to chat with him to say that yes, it's his body, he can do whatever he wants, however, at the same time, me as his wife will be the one who's taking care of him when he's old and ill and doesn't have the quality of life he should be having. So in that sense, I feel like it's my duty as his wife to keep him healthy, which is not happening :( So my suggestion to the ones doing it alone - yes, it's harder, however, you got this and you can do it, with planning and time. Make sure you have some easy to make meals ready when your partner comes home with fried chicken and greasy french fries or cupcakes, etc. you have to have a suitable replacement for you that is your 'go to'. Plus, reach out online, there's tons of resources. Even a facebook group called "vegans with non vegan partners' is a great start. I've been vegan almost 2 years, and can say it definitely gets easier over time navigating in a non vegan house :)

LiveLifeLori I live with a husband much like yours in terms of eating habits. He eats what I make, but I have to admit a lot of the recipes I try online (not the Krocks!) just turn out terrible and even I don’t like them. I don’t cook him meat as often as I told him I would because it’s just too much planning that I fail to do. He gets his meat and eggs out a lot which is even unhealthier. You mentioned having healthy things around to choose from when he brings home cookies and cupcakes, etc. that is where I am failing a lot. Will take this tip seriously now. I personally think it would be easier being alone than being with someone who constantly sabotages me. (I do love my husband even tho it sounds differently right now). Thx for letting me know I’m not alone and just need to double down and plan harder.

@@sallyjono I agree it would be easier alone, or with someone who's on board. I went vegan only 6 months after our wedding so it's been hard for him. I'll admit he does eat more plant based meals than before I went vegan. I've decided not to cook his meat anymore, so I try to have a plant based meal ready for him when he comes home from work (i don't cook every day though), but that way i give him the option, eat this delicious plant based meal that's all ready to be eaten, or spend the time making your own, meat laddened meal. He;s been picking my option a bit more lately out of laziness :) But of course he still bbq's his own meat and adds meat to the meal i make sometimes...but whatever. It's frustrating but I do feel like it's getting better,...very slowly though...Good luck with your situation :)

LiveLifeLori I’ll definitely check it out. I’ve been vegan for 14 mos now after being married 22 yrs (what a change for hubby!). Thought it would lower my BP and cholesterol levels, but it hasn’t. Do you think it could have anything to do with the fact that I have my chocolate squares daily and meals out with hubby with cheese and oils?! LOL, I think so. So I am being more strict with these foods now. After all, I want some health benefits from this way of life. I can never go back now though. I have even more empathy for our animals. I just found the Krocks website and recipes are listed there, making it even easier for me to go thru!

    • @LiveLifeLori
      @LiveLifeLori 4 года назад +1

Well, cholesterol only comes from eating animals. The cholesterol our body makes naturally is not the one that increases our cholesterol numbers. Give it time, as long as the chocolate doesn't have dairy, and you're not eating any animal products, your cholesterol numbers should come down. Yeah the Krocks has amazing recipes, love their hummus, but I just know i'm kinda caught in the middle, make a vegan (not plant based), meal for hubby and teenager with vegan cheese, vegan meat replacements, oil, etc, and they'll eat it usually, but I'd rather go plant based as I don't care for mock meats and just eat vegan cheese ocassionally, but if i make something 'too healthy' - the hubby and teen will not eat it, so I have to chose either make a salad for myself, and then they'll eat nuggets or grilled cheese or hamburgers (something unhealthy) or i meet in the middle and make some vegan cheese latered casserole dish and have a small scoop and eat a big salad for myself. Not the best scenerio I'd like to see, but for now, guess it's working. I asked my hubby which vegan meals that i make that he loves so i can make it more often...he picks scalloped potatoes, macaraoni and cheese and hasbrown cheese breakfast caserole....so really none of the healthy dishes i make :( Although they're cholesterol free, that's the only positive (plus no animals were harmed for those meals) :)

I'm one of the WFPB people who does this lifestyle as a single person in our marriage. I had to take this action for myself to improve myself, as a resultI lost 132 pounds. And it's still hard some days to stick with it BUT I realized I was the only one who could do it, as in noneone could do it for ne. I do have good accountability with my bestie but as far as my family is concerned, I'm accepted with the family as "different". Basically forced myself to be as important as everyone I was taking care of too. And now that my kids are grown I've got too much skin in the game to back to the way I was. Great video guys, you make a wonderful compliment to each other and great team effort. That's what marriage is all about. Letting love fill in the gaps in between.

As i try new recipes and cook for myself my 2 teenagers (also vegan) want to try what i am having. They are both eating much better than they used to and my son tells me he is lising weight too. My daughter is super fussy with food but even she likes a lot of whay i am eating. My husband on the other hand is resistant but here at home i only give him good food. Wven though i started wfpb on my own i have loved how easy it is to prepare meals. I find it easier than before which to me is a win win situation. I'm 52 slim and have always been able to eat whatever I want without gaining weight. Although I do adhere primarily to a plant based diet. I will occasionally eat eggs, cheese, butter, fish and on rarer occasions chicken or even beef/sausage etc. But I can go for weeks without eating any meat. I simply don't crave it, and that's probably why I tend to stay slim. Plus I walk my dog every day and work a lot in the garden, so I stay active. I think I found you guys right after you started your channel. I don't know how I found you, but I just love you both. You feel like my kids!
My story, I started my "adventure" HA in 2008 and although I didn't find WFPB until July 2018, I cut out all sugar and processed foods from the beginning but still ate meat, lost 65 lbs and have maintained it for 10 years with lots of tweaking and struggles. Now that I'm WFPB, the struggle is GONE and I feel the best I ever have. I'm not 100%! Although I don't eat any animal products, I do fall into the vegan junk food/oil sometimes when traveling or eating out.
Tips that helped, from the beginning:
    1. My kids had just left home and it was just my husband and me. MUCH easier I'm sure than those with families.
    2. I stopped baking. My husband has store bought SAD snack foods (break and bake cookies, ice cream, etc.) which he graciously eats AFTER I go to bed.
    3. I cook for him in batches and use the freezer. I also do the same with my meals.
    4. He is SO supportive of me all these years and I don't "hound" him either about his junk food and food choices. I may roll my eyes from time to time. ;)
    5. We keep our sense of humor and enjoy and respect each other. 38 years of marriage. I let him be him and I do me in the food department. We may not eat the same but we have lots in common.
It's working and a lifestyle now! YAAY!

Happy anniversary!!!! You two are an excellent example of several things I encourage my clients to do... Improving one’s self care helps relationships succeed, Avoiding conflict only hurts the relationship, & Having a shared vision really helps couples withstand all the slings and arrows.
As for doing this alone, I think it helps to really consider what environmental triggers impact you the most. Asking those you live with to support you by keeping their pantry items in a certain place, or by not eating certain foods at home, is reasonable. Just don’t expect them to do everything the way you want it. For years I kept certain foods at work so that I only had to use the fridge at home on weeknights and weekends. Having mealprep done in advance really helped. I also put a minifridge in my closet at one point to store prepped containers to grab for those eves and weekends. Having a routine really helps! I also used InstaCart, including the filters for organic stuff, and local CSA produce delivery.

You guys are so cute. It reminds me of my husband and I. Lol. We are on the same journey/adventure and I think this had made us stronger.
FYI I started this journey and now my husband jumped on board because he was diagnosed with a fatty liver for being over weight. Don't force or judge anyone. I just made great food that everyone ate it and did not realize what kind of food it was. When we had get togethers or we needed to be going somewhere, I would always ask to "help" and bring a couple dishes so I could continue what I waa doing. When they ask about my weightloss I then would gently tell them I eat the way I do and give the reason of weightloss, no more joint pain, no more virtego, and I miss my old clothes. I always tell them if they start this adventure not to judge and never preach about how good you are and how bad they are. None of that is true, it is just different versions of you and everyone is different. 💖

Doing it on one's own, Dr. Lisle (co author of "The Pleasure Trap"), would say to clean your environment. That's the most important thing to do to stick to it. So no bad food in the house, not one crumb. Living with someone else is much more complicated if they aren't on the same page, but at the very least that person would have to be supportive and together you would have to decide boundaries so that you can get your health on track. I am currently working on not eating the "treats" at work. In my home I'm a star. My work and home are completely different in terms of my behavior, so I do understand why keeping the environment pure is perhaps the most important setup for success. In case you're wondering how to deal when the environment is dirty, I would think you have to bring your vegan version of the goodies that are constantly offered to you. If you're hungry and without, it's only a matter of time before the willpower runs out in a dirty environment.

I find the both of you very inspiring. I am very into the science behind the diet on account of the way breast cancer then metastisized cancer and Alzheimer's and Diabetes and Arthritis and brittle bone runs in our family and depression. Wow, plant-based solves all of this. I really wanted to get started seriously with this years before doing it but my husband was NOT onboard till he had Prostate cancer stage 4. Since then he participates but often like pulling teeth.
So I find encouragement in your videos. We are late 60s and retired so are old enough to be your parents. Good job to both of you. It is so nice to see a young couple helping one another and also trying to help others to do the same.
My parents sickness really impacted our marriage and we had 3 children, one only in pre-school when their health catastrophes became our daily life. Our middle son and daughter-in-law have found out the are having twin boys and the one thing I do not want to be is for either of us to be the burden my parents became by never thinking about how to improve or keep their health.
So it is both physical health but also mental health. I take it seriously and frankly my family outside of my husband, is not too encouraging though they can see how much healthier we both are. My daughter-in-law both is interested sometimes in being vegan as she is allergic to beef (who knew?) and plant-based meats can help her eat more "normally". Hard to converse about it as she is on the fast track to an eating addiction. I've been there and done that.
We are happy but see the handwriting on the wall for her as she is about 80 lbs overweight with a back injury from being in the Army. You'd think she'd be more interested.

Advise trying this out on your own can isn't one simple answer, I would assume anyways, but, one thing that I feel should be a constant for anyone interested, is the "Why do I want to do this" and not think of it as some "trendy diet" . I was unhappy overall with myself, life and how I had gotten unhealthy from a toxic relationship I had been in around 6 years ago, I turned to RUclips for some 'fast easy diet" tips and accidently found 2 vegan channels that caught my attention, regardless of the channels that I started at, it spiraled into me spending an entire weekend binging Vegan and Plant Based channels, and was in AWE at the transformations of not only weight, but emotional health and wellness overall these people were sharing, that I threw out, or gave away everything animal based I had and started WFPB that Monday, and have never looked back. You really have to connect with the reason WHY first, and trust me, as someone who works amung big, "man's man" types in Trucking, I have heard it ALL and it has proven that after the years, the naysayers who would poke fun and tease, now turn to me for advice, because, some have recently had to get stints put in arteries, or have had high cholesterol and Blood pressure, crazy weight gain, or who see that I, who am almost 40, look younger now, than when I started my career here 10 years ago, never have been sick in the last 6 years, (maybe a few hours, yes hours with a runny nose and watery eyes for allergies), and that's it, the results have spoke for themselves. You must take each day in stride, do not limit yourself to some comfort foods now and again, do not feel that you fail if you have french fries or some plant based junk food, just don't make it a habit. Those treats are far more enjoyable and appreciated now more than ever, and I find that a channel like Krocks is super inspirational and FUN even if you don't have a partner to support you. You never know, someone could be interested, the YT platform is full of great channels, nutritionfacts.org is awesome for food facts and sciencey stuff, Avantgardevegan, is great for those super indulgent foods, and he has some simpler recipes also, PlantBasedNews is a great channel too, please know, some are a bit militant, and can be fussy to try to pick out what is your comfort level. Netflix has amazing documentaries like Forks over Knives, What the Health, Cowspiracy, and Game Changers that are SUPER motivators, that can be enjoyed with you by anyone who is a skeptic. It has honestly become the easiest thing I've done, that has had the best impacts, and as I said before, the results speak for themselves, even though It took me about 2 years before I really noticed weight loss, I slept better than ever, skin cleared, and had WAY more overall JOY and connection with the planet (i know very silly sounding) and so the weight not "falling off" didn't matter to me at the time, because I just felt super happy and content all the time. In the end, I feel it is the overall attitude about why you ditch animal based foods, and go vegan, WFPB, or generally Plant based with some of the 'junky comfort foods" that will ultimately help guide you along this ADVENTURE!! :) hope some of this made sense, or helps!

Well you hit on my biggest challenge and as you implied my situation is likely very common. Here on RUclips I have tons of support thanks to channels like "Krocks in the kitchen" In my real life I feel like I am on an island fighting an upward battle, everywhere I go. Quite frankly it is wearing me down to the point where I now sometimes question, can I keep this up after just hitting 1 year and 40 lbs weight loss.
You often mention that you are amazed at how successful your channel is, well it is because of people like me. Thanks for making your videos they inspire me.
So my long winded response can be summarized by saying watch "Krocks in the kitchen" and like channels to keep your motivation and drive alive.

My tip to losing weight with out a partner is to constantly remember why you started your weight loss (adventure ) ! - I use a rubber band on my wrist to remind myself to stay on track and focus on what’s important

Ahhh just as a thing to see or a thing to thwack yourself with, like a recovering smoker? I know that mainly as the "twang yourself when you get a nicotine craving and you'll train yourself to not crave it any more" hehe :P

You guys are so sweet. It is nice to see real people on RUclips that talk about real life struggles. Your openness about your marriage is refreshing. I appreciate you guys doing what you do and find you so inspiring. I mean how many pounds lost together 300? Amazing. I have gotten my husband and children on board with mostly vegan eating, not exactly whole foods plant based Nutritarian, but still I don't buy any animal foods, or have to prepare them. My family understands that I create foods for them that will nourish them, even if they really want junk food. They do sometimes eat vegan (or not) junk out and some processed vegan foods at home as well, but they eat far better than the SAD. I love eating healthy and how great I feel, and I get frustrated when they eat too much sugar or processed foods, but it is a "journey/excursion" for everyone and I have to be ok with them figuring it out on their own. I know I am a good role model for them and they respect my committment to health. I just wish I could be consistent enough with my goals to lose the last 10-20 pounds. I think of you guys and 300 pounds and wonder why I can't even lose 10-20. I will get there at some point, but I am pretty healthy in the meantime.

You're very fortunate to both be plant based. My husband has zero interest in being plant based and that's what my channel is about, how I make it work for us. My channel is very new, and I show how it's working for us. I make all of his sides plant based. It's not always easy but it's worth it to have my health and life back. Thanks for the encouragement! And happy anniversary!! Will you be showing us your anniversary dinner?

Dieting solo - My accountability buddy is my scale. I promised myself to weigh in every single morning, no matter how I ate the previous day, and face the music, one way or another. There are a lot of reasons why I found a diet that actually works for me, but I think having my scale as an accountability buddy has been incredibly useful in keeping me on track.
Overall, I am now down 75 pounds in just over 8 months.

I'm not sure how I found you two but I'm so glad I have. You two are just so honest and down to earth, I'm definitely a new fan! I love hearing all about how you met and your weight loss "adventure"! You're such an inspiration. I wanted to comment since there are 2 things I have in common with you that I wanted to mention. Your weight loss start date happens to be my birthday-June 22! And your anniversary is my sister's birthday-Nov. 5!!! That must mean something just not sure what! I love your videos and hearing everything you have to say. I am enjoying getting to know all about you. Thank you so much!!!

Brian, you are just gonna have to put up a singing video now! As far as losing weight on your own, I do track calories and use My Fitness Pal. I like it because I can track nutrients as well. It is tempting to want to eat out as I am not the cook that you both are. I will treat myself to a veggie burrito at a Mexican place on the weekends. I don't eat perfectly, but exercise and small changes have helped. Almost 30 lbs down :-)

He definitely will :) That sounds like a great plan and I love the idea that you don't have to be perfect, just do better than you did before and over time small changes will make a big impact!

Thank you for once again sharing these personal details with your "community" of followers. Whenever I start to lose motivation I know I can watch one of your videos and get back to where I need to be. Although my wife and two adult children are very supportive of my wholefood plant based journey, it always helps to connect with others who have struggled with weight and eating healthy. Thankfully my wife and children do not have the issues I do with my eating and health.
I think it would be great to have a way to reach out and "chat" or connect with other like minded people in this community, just not sure how to do that. This would be very helpful, especially with the holidays fast approaching! This time of year is usually when I fall off the wagon and land in a pile of meat!! lol....
Thanks again for caring enough and wanting to help others by making these awesome videos!

My family are healthy omnivores and it makes sense in our situation for me to accommodate them and make their food. I have two methods: 1) I create a “food island” in my mind and ignore everything that is not Whole Foods Plant Based, and what makes that easier is 2) My cooking energy if focused on making super delicious WFPB dishes for myself!

Hi, I so enjoy your videos cause both of you are so real. First of all you have to want to see a change in yourself, no one or nothing can do it for you. I had such a sweet tooth that I felt nothing would ever help me. But then I went on a juice fast followed by the potato diet and then a water fast for two weeks and that finally took my sweet tooth away. During this time I watched quite a few documentaries and became convinced that eating meat was hazardous to my wellbeing and quit cold turkey and never looked back. I live alone and I'm considered a senior citizen, so if I can do it anyone can. Good luck to you both for your accomplishments and keep up the good work, also Happy Anniversary!
