    Thanks for posting! Worked just as you showed. But wow! that wire is super fine and there is none spare. One should be awfully careful when stripping it back...

    Thank you for all the explanations. I'm a begginer into fixing cameras and I've got a problem with the OM-1. Opened the top of two cameras for foam and prism cleaning, and the lightmeter stopped working. I've gently moved the wires out of the way to fit the prism and put them back in place. Any idea what was done wrong and how can I check it? Maybe I smashed or pulled the wires around the prism or the lead brown wire to the battery chamber? Nothing seems disconnected. Maybe I accidentally jammed the meter needle? Has it ever happened to you? Any suggestion on how to test and fix it? (got a couple spares to practice) I'm sure it isn't the position of the on/off switch.

      The needle might got jammed/bumped by the focusing screen or the prism when reinstalling, not sure how to repair it I’ve actually had it happening once. You can try to remove focusing screen and reset to make sure it’s not touching the metering needle, as well as check the prism is properly seated inside the frame or not.
      I would also check wires connecting the battery terminal at bottom of the camera as that wire is prone to deteriorate and disconnect itself.

    Thank you for this video. I understand the metal tab in the battery compartment is supposed to make contact with the unlabeled (-) side of the battery. But what makes contact with the (+) side of the battery? I want to try to run a current through using a multimeter to make sure the circuit is complete, but idk where the other terminal is.

      My guess is the exposed thread from the battery holder. (on the camera ofc)

    What a great video! Thank you. I have 4 old OM cameras. Three give me the same light meter reading. One of them (an OM1n MD) gives a reading that is about 2 stops lighter than the others. If the others are set to 400ASA, 125th at f2.8, this one is set to about f8 to get the same visual reading (other settings the same). Is there anything I can check to possibly fix this issue? All the light meters are functioning, but this one seems to be giving the wrong reading.

      Check the battery voltage. If the battery is 1.5v it will give wrong reading.

      @@foloeel Thanks for the tip. I have ordered some batteries of the correct voltage and adapters.

    Is there a way to fix a inaccurate light meter? I realized mine is off after using 3 rolls. I was shooting at night and noticed the shutter was quite fast considering I was shooting at night in aperture priority. It does adjust in very low light to a lot of light but when I change the aperture from f/16-f/1.9 the meter doesn’t change much

      First, the light meter in OM-1 is for metering only; it is not linked to the exposure/shutter speed. You have to manually set the shutter speed at the base of the lens.
      Are you sure you have an OM-1? There is no easy way to adjust the light meter in those. If you make such a drastic change and the meter doesn't change much, it may not be working properly at all (someone may have tampered with the camera internals and broke the thin wire linking the metering to shutter speed indicator.

    I have 2 olympus OM-1 cameras, I tested the battery in both and the battery is not dead yet, as it works in one camera but not the other. I suspect my camera has a similiar problem as this one. I bought it for $150 and am wondering if its worth getting repaired by someone since I don't have the tools to complete your specific project. Do you have any insight or suggestions? Thank you!!

      You can use a manual light meter, smartphone app is cheapest, until you get the meter fixed. On an OM-1 the meter is generally the only thing that “goes wrong”.

    Where can I get my camera fixed in the New York area. I have the same light meter problem on my OM1

    When I bought my OM-1 3 days ago. The light meter is working. Then just now, when I accidentally dropped my camera on a carpet, the light meter suddenly doesn’t work. Does dropping a camera affects the light meter? Or there are other possible issues?

      Film cameras are fairly fragile, age doesn’t help either, the needle might fall out of position due to the impact of the fall, it’s a very fragile piece. If everything else works, a hotshoe Mount light meter or your cellphone’s light meter can be used for exposure

    My light meter moves when I turn the shutter ring without putting a battery in it. I'm wondering why that happened.

    • @TheGizmoGarage
      @TheGizmoGarage  2 года назад +2

      It's a physical compensation linked by cables that compensate with shutter speed, it won't be the actual/correct reading when battery is off, you can see it moving because of the physical link between the shutter dial and the needle mechanism.

    Do not use a magic erasure to clean a lens . You could damage the coatings this may have worked only because that portion was not or you did not see the damage you did.

    • @TheGizmoGarage
      @TheGizmoGarage  Год назад +1

      As a last resort. If your lens is fogged/fungus growing, no amount of chemicals will save your coating but you may still save the lens by remove the fungus.
