Using an acoustic guitar, Ray Scott shows different ways to capture the beauty of a musical instrument. By using different angles and various apertures for different depth of field effects while keeping a close eye on lighting and the background, Ray manages to show off a music instrument in interesting ways.
When in studio or in the field Ray uses Canon gear. This is a choice he made years ago knowing that he was buying into a system that he could grow into. His go to camera is the Canon EOS 6D with the second camera being a Canon 5D. Lenses used are all L series f/4 except for the 100mm macro f/2.8L lens. They are the 16-35mm f/4L wide angle, 24-105mm f/4 walk around and the 70-200mm f/4L medium telephoto. These lenses round out the kit which is carried about with either a Lowepro Urban Reporter 250 messenger bag for city shooting or a Lowepro Sling Bag for landscape field work. While Ray does more camera handholding than before due to the image stabilization capabilities of his various lenses, he still is a believer in using his Manfrotto carbon fibre tripod. It's light and it is sturdy. In studio Ray now uses Westcott constant lighting for good clean balanced lighting.
Ray is a firm believer in exposing himself to as much photography and its history as possible. By looking at other people's photos, he has gained a big appreciation of what this medium has to offer. Ray doesn't think that "copying" someone else's style is a good thing but rather feels that exposing oneself to others work can work as a teaching and inspirational tool. With this in mind, Ray has amassed a list of favorite photographers that he uses for inspiration. Some of these artistic photographers are Galen Rowell, Ansel Adams, Frans Lanting, Annie Leibovitz, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa, Freeman Patterson, William Neill and Richard Avedon.
One of the playlists on this channel is called "neighbourhood photographer" which covers tutorials shot in urban and suburban areas. It's always a challenge to see different things of interest when you've been to an area many times yet this is the best way to create good images. You need to return to familiar locations many times. To do so, Ray often drives by car to an area but when he really wants to cover ground yet see things more clearly, he uses his bicycle…bike…and explores the given place.
Whether shooting landscape, macro, portrait or abstract images, Ray always tries to be aware of his surroundings to capture the best pictures possible. Part of this workflow means he is very aware of composition and uses various tips, such as the rule of thirds, as a good starting point in composing. He also likes to break rules from time to time to add new effects to his photos. Being aware of angles, shadows, shapes, lines, textures, patterns and colours goes a long way to making good pictures. He is also a big believer in "getting out there" and shooting as much as possible as it is the only way to improve and flex one's imagination. His message is it doesn't matter if you do your photography in the city, suburbs country, mountains or by the sea, just make sure you do it and follow your artistic passion.

Good to have you back Ray, I like the alternative views - gives an incentive to try something different. Very effective. I think that "outside the box" is over used but is really apposite in this situation.

Hi Ray. Great as always. Whenever I see you have a new video, I stop what is going on and watch your production. Like the fact that your work is doable for the amateur with a small investment of equipment. Always good to see your ideas that work.

those came out really good, thanks for those lighting and exp tips. Now, when do we get a serenade?
@ 5:54 I love how you got the strings to look like they are moving @F4 in the areas out of dof I was told by a screenprinter, stacked letters are a nightmare b.c the clients come back saying nobody can read it. I guess they are harder to read on sleeves etc when the letters are stacked vs L to R, (going down the sleeve not up) has better capture to the viewers. Just a little fyi from an artist perspective.

Hi Ray, no, this is not a mother in law comment (LOL), the question is about the lighting on the standing guitar photo (at about 6:30), I can see the light box on camera right, are you using it as a constant light or as a flash?
    Nice video BTW.

    Thanks.. Jeff

Hi Jeff. I use Westcott constant lighting units. Either one or two at a time depending on what I’m trying to achieve. I’ve also gotten good results using window lighting. Especially on overcast days when the light is diffused. Be safe and thanks for watching.

  • @markharris5771

Every photographer who works with artificial lighting needs a few yards of black velvet. Then if you shoot analogue you have some great darkroom material.
As always your never ending list of great ideas has created another masterpiece. I especially the image where the neck and tuning keys are just catching a glint of light. I instantly thought it would make a great James Taylor or Neil Young album cover. I also liked the closer in shot, partly for the reasons you said, but also it looked slightly like the fret board was vertical and the body was horizontal. The way you caught the curve making it look more like the curve for your arm. I love the way it disconnects the mind and for me tells the story of music travelling in every direction. Touching people beyond those it was originally aimed at.
I’m sorry, and this is purely subjective and not critical of your brilliant skills in any way, but I wasn’t too keen on the panorama shot. For me some of the angles were too sharp with the strings running parallel with the bottom of the crop which for me jarred with the story of the guitar.
Great video Ray, I hope you have a good weekend.

Thank you so much for the kind words. They mean a lot. I too have a few doubts with that pano type shot but wouldn’t you know it, a couple comments after yours somebody liked that shot in particular. Always in the eye of the beholder. I hope you are keeping well and I wish you the best for the weekend. Cheers!

Hi Carol. Thanks so much. On the ad situation...I have no say whatever. The ads are not constant either, meaning that different people see different ads depending on viewing habits etc. This is something controlled by RUclips and so forth. I wish you a great weekend.

Very impressive views. With regards to the lighting, what recommendations do you suggest to cutting down specular highlights on the very glossy surfaces? One of the scenes of your equipment setup it looked as though you did put up a flag.

Hi Bruce. Really good point. Yep, it is a constant problem and I deal with it by moving lights to a certain position or moving myself to shoot where there isn’t that harsh light. Thanks for watching and have a great day.
