  • As the climate crisis continues to shape more and more discourse globally, very rarely does the global community seek to understand how the consequences of climate change are directly exacerbating socio-political issues in vulnerable communities. By using Kimberlé Crenshaw’s theory of intersectionality, Wanjiku aims to connect the dots between the climate change crisis and the gender based violence crisis. By paying extra attention to the communities that are directly affected by the consequences of climate change, this talk aims to shed light on the increase in gender based violence against women in these communities. Wanjiku is an incoming third year student at IE University from Nairobi Kenya, studying Philosophy, Politics, Law, and Economics (PPLE). Wanjiku has a keen interest in social impact and research work within the public sector. As an avid reader and student writer, Wanjiku is especially passionate about African literature and how this intersects with the Afro-feminist movement. As a self-identifying Afro-feminist, Wanjiku has devoted most of her efforts towards researching, writing, and speaking on matters affecting African women economically, socially, and politically. third-year This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
