For someone that built wheels for a bike shop during the winter 8 hours a day, I can tell you this. This is the hard way to do it. The way I learned and did it was put one side in first and attach it to the wheel so you don't have to fish around. Just drop and lock, flip drop spin lace and lock. Flip drop lace and lock. And repeat last step. 10 minutes you have a built wheel then snug the nipple and true. 15 to 20 minutes later finished wheel. The best I ever did was 30 wheels in one day, or 8 hour shift. There are people that can do 50 in a day, so I'm not or never was really that good at it.
I've built two wheels so far. Both times took an entire weekend, lol. I learned how to do it by staring at a spare wheel i had to figure out how to lace it proper. This video makes it way less complicated
tbh i built one wheel and i did the same thing as this vid but i might've as well done it blind folded cause it came out shit wheeled. :/
@@superwalt2159 i was able to dial in the second wheel. Some how. I paid a bike shop to true my first wheel. I will be relacing my drive wheel by the end of the year with a new hub
the way you laced the wheel with all the spokes in the hub drove me insane lol, ive built all my wheels and the first one i built like that (with all spokes in the hub) i thought i did it right rode my bike for like 2 hours and my wheel fell apart not even lying lol since then ive done it one spoke at a time and it made me feel more accomplished since it took longer to build it and lasted a year and a half to today and a couple days ago my wheels JUST started making noise meaning time to true so this video made me go and true my wheels ive put off for a couple days now thanks
If your weave was correct and your wheel fell apart your tensions weren't correct. Tension determines how force moves throughout the wheel as it takes impacts. If they are misbalanced the wheel falls apart. To determine evenness all spokes originating from the same side flange should make the same tone when plucked. Or use a tensiometer.
@@JoeBernard10 the wheel I was talking about was my very first one with a different rim but same spokes and hub and the tension was off, the minute I jumped it gave and spokes started popping. But since then my wheels are good and true once I had some people personally give me some insight. I like building my own stuff idk why, for example if something goes wrong and you built it yourself you can't really blame the company unless something tragically goes wrong like a part snapping or a wheel cracking.
my boy Deka is missing 6 spokes per wheel
@@EnvyKoi spokes will make some noises on the first ride. That's them "settling" into their final position. Spokes tend to twist or "wind up" as they are tightened by the builder, so some of that noise is them dewinding themselves.
Building wheels is immensely satisfying. I do it professionally. I make approximately 4,000 wheels per year and I owe a big part of my skill to riding BMX and destroying wheels all my life.
Good work building your own wheels!
I love the shirt mayne
Excellent instruction vid tbh
Please do "A day in the life of Spencer Foresman".
:D
Doesn't that describe every video posted? 😄
Thank you lord Spencer
U OK Bro? Check in crew checking in...
I like to build my own wheels as I feel bike shops just charge too much these days. My most recent build was a BSD Revo. hubset laced to chrome Colony Clone rims with silver spokes and green nipples. Very happy with them, they're about 9 days old now.
Do you bend the spokes because you don't know the right way to do it
SourceBMX builds the wheel for free when you buy the hub, rim, and spokes.
I’m about to swap hubs my question is for spoke length. The hub I is high flange stock eastern with a double wall eastern. I can’t seem to find info. I wanna go with a low flange hub and keep the rim. I was gonna just grab one of a few different sizes then go from there ?
Looks like this way of lacing makes the wheel truer?
Hey i got that same shirt. Show was sick last month in portland
You did that the hardest way possible I think but if it works it works
It’s really not that bad
@@SpencerForesman if only Jay's sister were that easy 🤷♂️🤣
@@MiBurnout well if you're built like a husky lord then it is super easy to get a big ol smooch from sister Jay.
@@lucastudor5536 what about Husky plus? 😂🤣😂
New challenge fort Spencer!!!
360 tailtap to footjam whip, No bar out Spencer?!
I wish you make it as decade out :O
Spencer For....SKIN!!!!!!!!
a prize for me :)
Yo Spencer ✌️👌👈
I have been riding this hub for a while now, and the only complaint I have is that I have to take the hub-guard off and tighten the cones every so often. If the hub goes silent you have to tighten.
Thanks for the intel
What bolt thingy? Mine has been silent from day one lol
@@jonathanmillien9555 I was referring to the cones. If they are to loose the "cassette clicks" will become inconsistent or go silent.
Had this hub for a month, much happier with the Odyssey v2 Clutch freecoaster.
Did Brant's bike make you switch? always love the videos!
No I’ve had it for awhile just haven’t built it up
Is there any chance we will see a wild Spencer at the Woodward jam in a few days
Exactly the video I need when I needed it 😂
You needed him to show you this??? Might as well go watch an episode of jackass!
@@glend7959 the jackass starring you? Leave young Ayden alone man. He didn't do anything wrong to you.
Spencer what video is the “get your back off the wall” it was a dude you encountered at a gas station
Again I thank you! I'm currently running G Sport Elites and love em, but I was thinking of building a set of ribcage with the BSD. Like you I've been cassette all my life except for a brief stint in my very early youth on a shit bike with coaster break freewheel set up. So far everybody loves it.I think I'm gonna give it a go. Thanks brother. On your new bike build are you going with a fire engine red and black theme? Me thinks. I just don't see you has a vanilla frame rider. You have to much pizzazz for that!👍🤪👍 Fuckin Lemonade!!! Up Tha BMX!!!
Save headaches, go with the Odyssey v2 Clutch freecoaster. Bailed on the planetary after a month.
Yeah planetary coaster. Welcome to the future of zero pedal pressure
Is it cheaper to build your own wheel? Rather than buying a complete wheel? Or what are the benefits
Complete wheels are good but you can’t pick the parts
@@SpencerForesman ohh makes sense, because i just purchased a budget complete wheel, might build my next one and come back to this vid
@@SpencerForesman is the Giveaway about a Santa Cruz bike real or a scam??
I used to build Wheels like that but now I do it I guess more professionally you could say one spoke at a time I find it way more easier and less chaotic
Yeah well you don't have your own signature Sunday frame so who's the professional now, eh?
Chaotic mode does not bend the spokes or risk scratching the rim.
I assemble the first side by putting the outbound spokes first and then the inbound ones (or vice versa, it doesn't matter), and on the second side I assemble the spokes in pairs, as in the video. That is, I use the half "normal" and half chaotic method. Of course that all the spokes must be placed on the hub since the begining.
Right in time, thank you!My front rim is heavily damaged and i just couldn't find the f*ck to lace hub but damn
You're only 2 mm off on the drive side spokes. That's like 1 or 2 Jay micros. Close enough. Not going to be an issue.
How did that license plate get approved 😂
I'm feeling like the hub change occurred because you was hanging out w/ Brant..... LoL
“SQUARESPACE FORESMAN”
Hands down the most difficult way to lace a wheel!
All mass production operations use hubs that are prefilled. This looks clumsy but I can get a wheel up built, up to tension and even within 4 minutes.
I feel like this way of lacing makes building it way more complicated than it needs to be.
This method is superior. It's just easier if you lace one layer at a time. Drive out bound, then drive in bound, non drive inbound, then non-drive out bound. As you lace one layer you have to pre-cross the spokes at the hub.
The first side you can build in any way you want. The second side i preffer to build like in the video, lacing pair of spokes, because in that way you dont need to pass the spokes around the spokes already mounted. Of course, all the spokes must already be placed in the hub at the beginning.
didnt hear any mention of spokes being diff lengths for drive side and non drive side, would be very useful info tbh for any1 tryin to build a wheel....and before all u keyboard warriors get on my case im typin this durin watching so if it is mentioned ignore me :P
I've always wondered how (exactly) to build a wheel.
I'm totally gayforbmx wheel building 😤💦 fuckin lemonade m'lord!!
Is anyone else pooping in their local pet shop rn
Lol
This is so real

Pizzalikeayou
👀 that’s too complicated for my simple brain. I do one side at a time.
Don't put it in the wrong hole, " that's what she said". 🤓
Such bullshit. Ordered a shadow symbol hub in the front and back and the Gsport Birdcage rims. Shop told me 184 in the back and 186 in the front. Back is done just need to be trued. But the front rim can’t be triple crossed. I double crossed it and it just looks weak. The spokes must be too short in assuming . But wtf. Said the length was verified by manufacturer
Yo Spencer can I get a bike please you've been giving away bikes in you country why don't you send one to me in the Philippines please
Get a haircut :)
If you are new to this channel, go watch a professional! These guys think the air is poison!!!!
Sponsored Foresman is a professional
Might want to take it easy on the amphetamines. You're starting to disassociate. Go listen to a Joe Rogan podcast to get yourself back.
kinda weak spence... I love the channel and all, but c'mon man...it's like chad wrote and edited this video...and built the wheel for that matter...maybe it's time to start a shop or something...
what a pain in the ass. BMX is expensive and things break all the time, then it's like 100s of dollars to fix. Just stick to skateboarding, much easier.
So are most things in life. Never get a car and walk everywhere because cars cost too much.
@@SpencerForesman hahaha. Yeah getting out of bed is too hard. I'm just going to stay in bed and listen to Phoebe Bridgers and cry into my pillow.
