We know that BTS is all sharing about mental health and talking about bullying and about young generation and stuff but I still have not seen any kind of improvement in korean people's mindsets? If that makes sense?? Its like all BTSs hard work has gone into waste to wake up the society. Even the kdrama stories are all the same. There are students getting bullied and attempting suicide, people abusing power, nobody giving shit about one's mental health. Don't you think these dramas are just showing the real face of their country, not making people aware about these issues.?? I wanted detailed answers of some questions from the video but They were short.

I know it is funny but kdramas have been, at least for me, the only view I have of Korea so asking these are the only way to get to a more honest view.
The scientific reason behind not using deodorant is that East Asians lack the gene that makes your sweat smell. They therefore have no use for it. Lucky them because I wish I could relate. I sweat a lot and have to constantly put on deodorant 😂
@bxbysxn yeah there’s always a chance of getting it too. Somewhere down his family tree someone might have not been completely East Asian so it could of happened that way. The summer months are always the worse 😂
i have visited Seoul as a tourist and found Koreans to be very friendly. in tourist areas people stopped us to practice their English several times. i was also approached by a woman who needed help translating a letter that was written in cursive… interesting experience :)
I used to have random Korean students ask to have simple conversations with me back in university to practice their English skills on. This was already almost 20 yrs ago, but i could just imagine that it has just gotten more popular to have Koreans and other foreigners fly out to the Philippines for their college education because of the relatively cheaper but quality education and being predominantly English speaking.
Thats what most of korean people do but leaving in seoul as forgeiner that doesnt mean they are friendly but only need you for some practise and thats a big problem lots of forgeiners deal with.. They have a lot of predudice and is not easy to become friends with koreans..
I like you guys and I'm not trying to be rude, but...on the topic of the role of women in society. You 2 said you felt the book was over exaggerated, but your female colleagues said it was on point. Then you said - so it's somewhere in the middle?? That's like me reading a book about Korea (as an American) and you reading a book about Korea - and then both of us giving opinions on whether we think it's accurate. Mine is based only on my perspective of what I see. Yours is based on living the life everyday for your whole life. Whose is most accurate of a representation? Just saying that if your female colleagues are saying it's accurate, you should lean towards the fact that it's accurate. Your perceptions are not based on living life as a female - you're missing a lot of the subtle struggles because you just can't see it from where you are. I just feel like you judged your perceptions and the female colleagues perceptions as equal status - which, of course, it's not. Their perception, as the demographic being discussed, holds far more weight than yours.
Of course, the Korean females perception and experiences, hold far more value than the men's, when it comes to the female struggles in Korea. However, as men, they provided their perception, which was that it does happen but they can't attest how much it happens, so the safer thing to say would be its in the middle, rather than an extreme yes or an extreme no. And I think, they also like saying it that way, so not to soil the name of Korea. But that's just my hunch. Like in my country, if people ask me, how much do people here break traffic rules - I would say a lot but I don't have a car of my own to atteast to the fact that A LOT of people here break rules. But when I hear from people, those who do travel, they say no one follows the rules at all. Now, as a person from that country, if I have to explain this to a foreigner, I can't just, "everyone breaks the rules in my country" - My country looks awful and then that would mean I am painting every person in the same light. So I would say, many do and many don't, it depends from person to person but yes, it does happen. I feel like this is what these two wanted to say. But of course, the females who experienced it, would have a more valubale answer and accuracy rate than what these two say. But they did provide us with their opinion. I am not trying to be rude or anything. Please don't take this as any hate. I have perceived their response in this way. I could be wrong but this is what I think.
Seems like all the Korean dramas and pop idol culture is influencing people's perception of Korea, so I'm glad you guys are taking time to go through these questions.
To be fair Koreans' perceptions of the West has been shaped by many Hollywood movies for decades and America as the land of dreams come true. That may have influenced a lot of immigration to the US. I know this first hand as an immigrant baby back in 1975; I've seen over the years so many failed dreams but yet Koreans still get lulled to go to America. Of course many of us did succeed but not without incredible costly struggle and sacrifice.
I might add too many Koreans left because Korea was very politically unstable even though economically the miracle of the Han was truly a miracle. My parents left because of economic hardship but political hardship was worse.
its not really fanservice though. people do slap butts when its like a bunch of peers (this isnt even a korean thing, its an asian thing. almost all asian countries do this). but ofc this is more common among teenagers to adults under 30. i dont think anyone would do it when they are over that age. also people don't do it between just two people if that makes sense. you only do it when you have that "big peer group" dynamic with friends who you like to play around with. i dont think danny and david has that kinda relationship which is why they said that. Idols do this because their relationships are very similar to that kinda friend groups. Source: I'm asian and its pretty common among most of my friend groups.
lol idk... I live in Busan and have seen boys and men (teenagers to 30s) touch each other a lot in ways that certainly would be considered strange in the US haha. sitting on each others laps in public, one time two men in their 20s were trying to put sand in each others' swimming trunks at the beach, etc etc. I sometimes find it odd that Korea can be quite a homophobic society, yet their standard for "correct masculine behavior" is quite relaxed compared to other countries...
@@vatefairefoutre0 when I arrived in incheon and saw men hugging or walking hand in hand I was like "wow they are so open to same-sex couples" ... and it turns out that it's just a culture thing. And yes I disagree with Danny, people are really touchy feely with each other. I went to a party where we rented a flat and slept all together and the boys slept in a pile using each other as pillow/hugging each other. I think it is quite normal. It's the same between girls they hug very easily each other
"hangul is easy to learn, korean is not" ain't that the truth. my dad would work in korea for 6 months at a time installing & repairing wafer fab robots and he told me how quickly he learned to read hangul but still had no idea what it actually said. i tried learning hangul/korean but i think my previous knowledge of japanese kept tripping me up because i would forget or jumble up some of the characters and had a hard time picking out words by listening.
Tell me about it! I've been trying to learn for about 8 months. I learned hangul and a know a good bit of grammar, but I don't think that I can speak one sentence.

@@starrygrimes500 Its not about that, feminism in korea is very different, feminism in korea is represented by radical feminist groups like womad, which are actual men hating groups, not only that these feminist groups are terfs and are also against lgbt+ rights. There have been cases where these feminist groups out gay men without their permission. A lot of foreigners just think that koreans just hate feminism cause they're conservative, but that's not exactly true. I've met a lot of very open minded koreans who have also been against feminism.
Well, feminism has made Korea/Korean ppl very sensitive. Back in the day, it was okay to give women piggyback, but if you do that now, it's sexual assault.
It's so funny to me when someone asked how long it takes to travel the length of the country and they said 6 days by bike. It really puts in perspective how small the country is.
reading this convo made me laugh, i cant do road trips in my country cause it takes 2 hours max with traffic to go across my country by car (from east to west), by bike probs a day, i even walked from the south to the center before and it barely takes a few hours- i wonder how small u'll see my country (am from singapore by the way) in comparison to s korea, jeju island is x2 the size of my country i-
@@TheRealityofFakei rmb my friend who lives in the north went cycling and took a wrong turn, and ended up in the eastern parts of singapore after just 20 minutes of cycling so its kinda funny how small it is. i think we r 20th (?) in terms of smallest countries in the world, and we are the only island-city-state in the world so thats pretty cool except we have too many people and not enough space. I realise that space issues probably sound weird to other countries, that we lack the space for agriculture and that our gov has to plan every area allocation, but the good thing is everythings super convenient cause literally everything is close tgt

The good thing about a video like this, is it most of us that know you gentlemen also know that you’re very honest about your country and it’s goings on. Your generation is represented very fairly by both of you so when a person ask you a question about South Korea that person will know that they get as honest and answer and you can provide. Thank you very much for this video it was very informative and honest.
Mental health is so important to be treated that's why there's a lot of suicides amongst young people and even older people they should take very seriously the mental health.

I visited Korea in 2019 with my 2 daughters and we found people were very friendly and helpful. People of all ages and genders offered help with directions etc and they often approached us first to ask if we needed help. They seemed really happy when we spoke to them in Korean even though we only knew the basics (a few sentences/words). An older gentleman came up to us and shook our hands to say thank you for British help in the Korean war! One young man even walked with us to SM Town when we asked for directions. School children greeted us and one even bowed to me. We loved our time there and would definitely visit again.
Agreed, more videos like this and less videos about K-pop gossip. I get the other ones get more views, but this is WAY more interesting imo. Plus, there are like millions of videos about the other stuff.

Before I went to Korea I was told that everyone was so friendly and polite, when I went to Korea I experienced the opposite. However, upon reflection I think it's just down to the people you bump into in the world - some will be nice, some not so much. I don't think it should give you an opinion on the country as a whole. Will I visit Korea again after my experience with those few people? Absolutely! I also think that these things can be down to cultural differences that we have to learn and accept with one another :) P.s. I bumped into a lot of students that wanted me to be a part of a 'Christian cult' in Hongdae - would be so great if you guys can do a video on that :)
6:56 For the wheelchair question no, it's not easy, especially with a manual chair (but I can understand why you would think that if you don't use one since you don't know what to look for). Even Seoul was very difficult to get around in because it's extremely hilly at random points. I'm talking steep ass if you lose your grip you're going to roll backwards and probably die hills. And because it's hilly, a lot of shops are built on the incline, so they need a set of steps or one step to get in, so then you can't just roll in. It's not the worst city in the world to go around in a wheelchair in because most of it is on the new side, a lot of sidewalks are wide, and people are very helpful, but it can be very challenging. And like taxis in other countries, drivers will just refuse to take you because even if you can tranfser yourself into the car they don't want to load your chair into the trunk (even though they load suitcases). A lot of places you might want to shop or eat in are simply just small or in buildings without elevators. Some of the restaurants we visited had stairs with no handrail even. If you stick to the touristy sites like indoor museums it's not so bad, but a lot of the historical sites are inaccessible because they aren't going to damage old buildings to put ramps in. You can see the outside, but not go in. A lot of traditional restaurants too have stairs inside because you take off your shoes and then go up a few stairs to the actual eating area. I would not have been able to visit and see as much as I did had I not been able to walk a little and had help from my friends carrying my chair. People have made vlogs about using a wheelchair in Korea, so I would look at those or even just regular vlogs and look at the streets as they walk around. Everyone has different capabilities in a wheelchair, so there is no one size fits all answer. Out of the entire country though, Seoul is the most accessible.
Celebs are mostly canceled for unethical behaviours like bullying or rudeness though, since the concept of a good moral upstanding is very important in Korea. But I do agree that the pressure to succeed is immense. Hopefully that changes soon
The KPOP idols have terrible lives I think, they are usually malnourished (on severe "diets" most of the time), their companies control 90 % of what they say publicly, how they dress, how they look, they don't have much of a free time... and then their "fans" criticise them very often for their "imperfect" looks etc.
You said "bike stamps" and I knew what I'm going to do next time I go to Korea! BIKE TOUUUUR! Also for people thinking to go to SK, you should go! I did a 1-month trip across the country with my boyfriend and it was amazing. People were super nice, we didn't have any bad experience, nature was great (if you like hiking for example), food too of course and we really had a great time.
@Aas We only used buses and trains when it took too long by bus. Then, since it was a long trip, we only planned the first days in Seoul (airbnb) and then were deciding what to do depending on the weather. So we had a rough plan of what we wanted to do or visit before leaving and then planned step by step. Since we went mid-September to mid-October, there were not many tourists and we could travel quietly without too much stress!
@@Yoga_Friend Depends on your budget. I was with my boyfriend and we're both working so I would say 2500-3000€ including flights, visits, accommodation, etc. Not including the food! I didn't count that. For your stay, it's hotels or Airbnb... Really depends on what you want and can afford, we used hotel comparators to check prices. What I've done is spend hours on blogs and vlogs, note down what I wanted to do/visit, then plan around those things (like sleeping in a hanok, visit X museum, go hiking in Seoraksan, going to Everland)... So just inform yourself as much as possible!
Everyone who is asking about Korean liking foreigners: if you make the effort to learn the language a nd culture properly they will like you. Older people get very impressed very quickly and tend to give you food. Younger people, if you go to around university most of them speak English well (despite saying otherwise) and will be open with foreigners Of course everyone is different but globally Korean people are really nice
This was an informative video. And I don't really feel anything against the strict korean ethical values and the way they carry themselves in public. It's actually one of the things I started liking about Korean culture first.

After living in Korea last year, I just want to say it is very easy to find deodorant haha. I actually wished I hadn't brought so many of my own because I found one I liked more there (in a rural supermarket, no less). So, yeah. Don't worry about finding deodorant, they've got foreigners covered in that sense ;)
My experience is that though there is public wifi everywhere in Korea, I'm usually unable to access these without a Korean phone number or without identifying myself somehow and this isnt always straightforward. I cant remember exactly what it was but everytime I visit Korea I always struggle with the wifi >
You're making me want to visit again! I definitely recommend getting out of Seoul, and I didn't know very much Korean when I went but could at least read Hangul. I rented a car and drove all over the country. People were friendly and helpful, from the cities to the smaller towns to the rest stops along the road. Best food I had was actually street vendor food in Daegu followed by a reststop somewhere between Gongju and Yesan. Not that anyone asked. lol! I can't wait until I can travel again and go back there and explore more.
Because skinship culture is very different and it's good to know what other countries consider normal. I have never touched my friends on 20 years because in my country it's not a thing but in Korea friend of the same gender will touch you a lot (like I had someone touch my boobs to see their size xD)
@@learikosontcuit7129 Ok but why just the butt, the question wasn't about skinship but the butt. I think korea think deffirently than us about the proximity between people but I don't think that it is only South Korea it also depends a lot with the personnality of a persone. In my country there is also a lot people who like skinship but not everyone and that's the same in Korea you can see that some people don't like skinship at all or don't think of it and that other people love it and are very touchy. So it's a mix of culture and personnality.
I guess I'm a Koreaboo then because I'm practicing Korean daily, I teaching English to a class of Korean teens online each week, and I googled a local Christian Korean congregation so I could go to church and see what it's like to worship in Korean. It was an event where anyone in attendance can stand and introduce themselves and say what's on their kind or heart regarding being grateful to God for this or that blessing in their lives. I decided to try getting up to stand in front of them all, I introduced myself in Korean, and I explained that I found Korean music and dramas during a time when I could not stop crying after my mom passed away. So, it was kind of my way of giving my thanks and also showing my appreciation to the Koreans there for the beauty of the culture and everything I'm learning. All of this has helped to bring me out of a sadness and anxiety that I couldn't handle before the past 2 years when I found BTS. Oh, and after the meeting, 10 or 11 people came to meet me and thanked me for speaking. They told me I was very brave and they invited me to come again whenever I want to. Two Korean women asked for my number and gave me their numbers. One said she would like to invite me to her home, and the other said she will help me learn Korean if I help her learn English. It was a really surprising time because I was nervous they wouldn't want me to be there. But everyone was very warm, welcoming, and kind.
That isn't being a Koreaboo? It just means you are respectful enough to learn more about a culture, by learning its language and customs, and interacting with Koreans in your local area.
I had the cutest experience with a panicked ajumma in a small grocery store :) she tried her best at asking if I wanted a plastic bag in english so I answered "yes" in korean :D Hahaha she was so relieved that I knew some korean and told me that her husband usually deals with the foreigners but he was not there that day :) It made for a really fun and cute memory and she praised me for buying and liking kimchi hahaha
People were very friendly and helpful when I was there. Being able to read Hangeul helped quite a bit even if I didn’t know what every word meant. Knowing some conversational Korean was good also. It broke the ice and I felt like people genuinely appreciated my effort especially older Koreans. South Korea is a beautiful country and the mixture of the old and new side by side in places like Seoul is amazing to see and experience. Can’t wait to visit again and spend some more time exploring Busan and Jeju.

I"m totally proud of Koreans because you all work so hard, yes there may be a few bad apples but then again who's perfect and of course no one is perfect no matter where we are from we all make mistakes. I sincerely hope South Korea keeps their social values and overall culture intact as much as possible into the future. It would be very disappointing if the country became the next USA 2.0 or heavily influenced by any other western country.
Ditto. Kpop/Korean entertainment is a double-edged sword. I think SK will find it difficult to keep their values & culture intact as it’s demography decline rapidly.
Exactly, that’s what i like about Korean culture. There’s a reason why they’re one of the safest countries in the world, no teen pregnancies, they get married when they’re prepared, can stay out at night without much worries,etc. While other people think they still socially live in the 50’s, I think morals and values don’t have to change. Of course, like in everything they’re not perfect and maybe there a few things that can be handle better. But I think the same as you about not wanting SK to get “contaminated” with the western culture.
I don't think , these values would still persist As young generation are more linent toward American culture in general Young generation from Asia think US ways more liberalising and satisfactory

Korea reminds me of how the US was in the late '50s and early '60, but transitioning to a more "open" mindset. 😎😎😎 EDIT: Meaning Southern California in the LA area. Not the entire US, which was made evident by the Jan 6 debacle.
At the same time though, the US is still speaking about issues that we here in Sweden solved many decades ago, like abortion. Compared to Korea, the US is ahead of Korea in terms of social issues etc, but is still behind in many things compared first world countries in Europe, mostly Nordic countries.
Good questions and good answers. I've considered SK as a retirement location. Mainly for its better health care and that its a safer country than pretty much almost anywhere. (crime rate is amazingly low.)
For the sat/act I heard that UC’s are not going to need those test scores as an admission requirement moving on. But it is option to include if you want too.
I think such videos are very important especially for those thinking of visiting SK. Also i think the mis communication and misunderstanding question shld be treated deeply to hlp foreigners.

I was so surprised! >< I don't think they put something inside her drink as we drank the same and it was not much... anyway I had to piggyback her outside of the bard and around the streets to find a cab to send her home.
The background music is too loud, it is really hard to hear you. Probably a lot of people listen this kind of videos like listening to a podcast (with a bt headset, without looking at the screen, doing some robotic thing while giving attention to the speech. But when the bg music is too loud, that makes it really hard to focus (because you do not see the people's mouth or face to support your hearing). So it would be nice if you turn it down a bit when it comes to this kind of chatting videos
I'm sorry, I do like this channel, but saying "I'm a man, I don't know much about this.... I thought that it was exaggerated" seemed like gaslighting to me. Why is it that when women speak up, people (mostly men) think that they're trying to be victims? It's like, men don't want to accept their privilege in society. It's obviously not an issue limited to SK, but I do watch videos, Ted Talks and stuff about women from SK, and it's pretty much evident from SK media too about how women are treated there. I'm from India, and I relate to so many women in SK. When I heard you both say that, I got reminded of the people in my own country who refuse the term "feminism" and think it's not inclusive of men, or who think that men are ones oppressed or even that gender issues don't exist. There is not "middle ground" when it comes to feminism.

I have been watching Korean content (youtubers & variety shows) for a full year so far and I can recognize some words and phrases now! This is me not even trying to study for it lol 🤓🤓
I got around fairly okay in Seoul in a wheelchair (back in 2018, actually it was this month in 2018), there were of course SOME issues, but generally since I was only there for a week I got to see most of the things I wanted 💙. The nicest people I came into contact with, forever grateful for their help
I was in Korea in 2019, my experience was a little different with old people. In at least 4 different places they were friendly and using hand gestures we communicated and smiled, one even offered something to drink since we were waiting a long time at the bus stop. Only they were surprised we were from India. Will definitely go and maybe 🚲 next time.
Came here after watching the part 2. I remember a woman who ran out her house to help me and my family look for our accommodation. We were just standing on the street trying to read the map and suddenly a woman came out of her house and accompanied us. She said she saw us on her CCTV and we looked lost. 🤣 We were so grateful to her.

Hi guys!!I don't know why there are so many questions about if Korean ppl treat foreigners badly😯 In 2019 I travel to Korea with my 2 sisters and have the greatest time of our lives.. since day one everywhere we went there were people who stop on the street to give us directions or help us carry our baggage, in the subway or buses the ask us our destination and told us when whe should step out... We are from Mexico and speak a little english so we were scared of having a hard time with the language barrier but everyone was so kind and patient with us and tried to understand us and speak to us in english or with signs that we felt so at ease and happy there... once Covid is over I hope we can go back😊🥰💕 you guys are great!! love your videos!!

The scientific reason behind not using deodorant is that East Asians lack the gene that makes your sweat smell. They therefore have no use for it. Lucky them because I wish I could relate. I sweat a lot and have to constantly put on deodorant 😂

i have visited Seoul as a tourist and found Koreans to be very friendly. in tourist areas people stopped us to practice their English several times. i was also approached by a woman who needed help translating a letter that was written in cursive… interesting experience :)

I used to have random Korean students ask to have simple conversations with me back in university to practice their English skills on. This was already almost 20 yrs ago, but i could just imagine that it has just gotten more popular to have Koreans and other foreigners fly out to the Philippines for their college education because of the relatively cheaper but quality education and being predominantly English speaking.

I like you guys and I'm not trying to be rude, but...on the topic of the role of women in society. You 2 said you felt the book was over exaggerated, but your female colleagues said it was on point. Then you said - so it's somewhere in the middle?? That's like me reading a book about Korea (as an American) and you reading a book about Korea - and then both of us giving opinions on whether we think it's accurate. Mine is based only on my perspective of what I see. Yours is based on living the life everyday for your whole life. Whose is most accurate of a representation? Just saying that if your female colleagues are saying it's accurate, you should lean towards the fact that it's accurate. Your perceptions are not based on living life as a female - you're missing a lot of the subtle struggles because you just can't see it from where you are. I just feel like you judged your perceptions and the female colleagues perceptions as equal status - which, of course, it's not. Their perception, as the demographic being discussed, holds far more weight than yours.

Of course, the Korean females perception and experiences, hold far more value than the men's, when it comes to the female struggles in Korea. However, as men, they provided their perception, which was that it does happen but they can't attest how much it happens, so the safer thing to say would be its in the middle, rather than an extreme yes or an extreme no. And I think, they also like saying it that way, so not to soil the name of Korea. But that's just my hunch. Like in my country, if people ask me, how much do people here break traffic rules - I would say a lot but I don't have a car of my own to atteast to the fact that A LOT of people here break rules. But when I hear from people, those who do travel, they say no one follows the rules at all. Now, as a person from that country, if I have to explain this to a foreigner, I can't just, "everyone breaks the rules in my country" - My country looks awful and then that would mean I am painting every person in the same light. So I would say, many do and many don't, it depends from person to person but yes, it does happen.

To be fair Koreans' perceptions of the West has been shaped by many Hollywood movies for decades and America as the land of dreams come true. That may have influenced a lot of immigration to the US. I know this first hand as an immigrant baby back in 1975; I've seen over the years so many failed dreams but yet Koreans still get lulled to go to America. Of course many of us did succeed but not without incredible costly struggle and sacrifice.
I might add too many Koreans left because Korea was very politically unstable even though economically the miracle of the Han was truly a miracle. My parents left because of economic hardship but political hardship was worse.

its not really fanservice though. people do slap butts when its like a bunch of peers (this isnt even a korean thing, its an asian thing. almost all asian countries do this). but ofc this is more common among teenagers to adults under 30. i dont think anyone would do it when they are over that age. also people don't do it between just two people if that makes sense. you only do it when you have that "big peer group" dynamic with friends who you like to play around with. i dont think danny and david has that kinda relationship which is why they said that. Idols do this because their relationships are very similar to that kinda friend groups. Source: I'm asian and its pretty common among most of my friend groups.

I live in Busan and have seen boys and men (teenagers to 30s) touch each other a lot in ways that certainly would be considered strange in the US haha. sitting on each others laps in public, one time two men in their 20s were trying to put sand in each others' swimming trunks at the beach, etc etc. I sometimes find it odd that Korea can be quite a homophobic society, yet their standard for "correct masculine behavior" is quite relaxed compared to other countries...

And yes I disagree with Danny, people are really touchy feely with each other. I went to a party where we rented a flat and slept all together and the boys slept in a pile using each other as pillow/hugging each other. I think it is quite normal.

"hangul is easy to learn, korean is not" ain't that the truth. my dad would work in korea for 6 months at a time installing & repairing wafer fab robots and he told me how quickly he learned to read hangul but still had no idea what it actually said. i tried learning hangul/korean but i think my previous knowledge of japanese kept tripping me up because i would forget or jumble up some of the characters and had a hard time picking out words by listening.
my friend was a huge fan of running man years ago and she literally learned how to read hangul through some of the challenges/games the cast did 😂

There have been cases where these feminist groups out gay men without their permission. A lot of foreigners just think that koreans just hate feminism cause they're conservative, but that's not exactly true. I've met a lot of very open minded koreans who have also been against feminism.

I visited Korea in 2019 with my 2 daughters and we found people were very friendly and helpful. People of all ages and genders offered help with directions etc and they often approached us first to ask if we needed help. They seemed really happy when we spoke to them in Korean even though we only knew the basics (a few sentences/words). An older gentleman came up to us and shook our hands to say thank you for British help in the Korean war! One young man even walked with us to SM Town when we asked for directions. School children greeted us and one even bowed to me. We loved our time there and would definitely visit again.

Its surprising to see people actually believing it, I thought it was common knowledge media doesn't represent the people.
Before I went to Korea I was told that everyone was so friendly and polite, when I went to Korea I experienced the opposite. However, upon reflection I think it's just down to the people you bump into in the world - some will be nice, some not so much. I don't think it should give you an opinion on the country as a whole. Will I visit Korea again after my experience with those few people? Absolutely! I also think that these things can be down to cultural differences that we have to learn and accept with one another :)

6:56 For the wheelchair question no, it's not easy, especially with a manual chair (but I can understand why you would think that if you don't use one since you don't know what to look for).
Even Seoul was very difficult to get around in because it's extremely hilly at random points. I'm talking steep ass if you lose your grip you're going to roll backwards and probably die hills. And because it's hilly, a lot of shops are built on the incline, so they need a set of steps or one step to get in, so then you can't just roll in. It's not the worst city in the world to go around in a wheelchair in because most of it is on the new side, a lot of sidewalks are wide, and people are very helpful, but it can be very challenging.
And like taxis in other countries, drivers will just refuse to take you because even if you can tranfser yourself into the car they don't want to load your chair into the trunk (even though they load suitcases).
A lot of places you might want to shop or eat in are simply just small or in buildings without elevators. Some of the restaurants we visited had stairs with no handrail even. If you stick to the touristy sites like indoor museums it's not so bad, but a lot of the historical sites are inaccessible because they aren't going to damage old buildings to put ramps in. You can see the outside, but not go in.
A lot of traditional restaurants too have stairs inside because you take off your shoes and then go up a few stairs to the actual eating area. I would not have been able to visit and see as much as I did had I not been able to walk a little and had help from my friends carrying my chair.
People have made vlogs about using a wheelchair in Korea, so I would look at those or even just regular vlogs and look at the streets as they walk around. Everyone has different capabilities in a wheelchair, so there is no one size fits all answer. Out of the entire country though, Seoul is the most accessible.

Celebs are mostly canceled for unethical behaviours like bullying or rudeness though, since the concept of a good moral upstanding is very important in Korea. But I do agree that the pressure to succeed is immense. Hopefully that changes soon
The KPOP idols have terrible lives I think, they are usually malnourished (on severe "diets" most of the time), their companies control 90 % of what they say publicly, how they dress, how they look, they don't have much of a free time... and then their "fans" criticise them very often for their "imperfect" looks etc.

I did a 1-month trip across the country with my boyfriend and it was amazing. People were super nice, we didn't have any bad experience, nature was great (if you like hiking for example), food too of course and we really had a great time.
@Aas We only used buses and trains when it took too long by bus. Then, since it was a long trip, we only planned the first days in Seoul (airbnb) and then were deciding what to do depending on the weather. So we had a rough plan of what we wanted to do or visit before leaving and then planned step by step. Since we went mid-September to mid-October, there were not many tourists and we could travel quietly without too much stress!

@@Yoga_Friend Depends on your budget. I was with my boyfriend and we're both working so I would say 2500-3000€ including flights, visits, accommodation, etc. Not including the food! I didn't count that. For your stay, it's hotels or Airbnb... Really depends on what you want and can afford, we used hotel comparators to check prices. What I've done is spend hours on blogs and vlogs, note down what I wanted to do/visit, then plan around those things (like sleeping in a hanok, visit X museum, go hiking in Seoraksan, going to Everland)... So just inform yourself as much as possible!

Older people get very impressed very quickly and tend to give you food.
Younger people, if you go to around university most of them speak English well (despite saying otherwise) and will be open with foreigners

After living in Korea last year, I just want to say it is very easy to find deodorant haha. I actually wished I hadn't brought so many of my own because I found one I liked more there (in a rural supermarket, no less). So, yeah. Don't worry about finding deodorant, they've got foreigners covered in that sense ;)

My experience is that though there is public wifi everywhere in Korea, I'm usually unable to access these without a Korean phone number or without identifying myself somehow and this isnt always straightforward. I cant remember exactly what it was but everytime I visit Korea I always struggle with the wifi >
You're making me want to visit again! I definitely recommend getting out of Seoul, and I didn't know very much Korean when I went but could at least read Hangul. I rented a car and drove all over the country. People were friendly and helpful, from the cities to the smaller towns to the rest stops along the road. Best food I had was actually street vendor food in Daegu followed by a reststop somewhere between Gongju and Yesan. Not that anyone asked. lol! I can't wait until I can travel again and go back there and explore more.

I have never touched my friends on 20 years because in my country it's not a thing but in Korea friend of the same gender will touch you a lot (like I had someone touch my boobs to see their size xD)

I think korea think deffirently than us about the proximity between people but I don't think that it is only South Korea it also depends a lot with the personnality of a persone. In my country there is also a lot people who like skinship but not everyone and that's the same in Korea you can see that some people don't like skinship at all or don't think of it and that other people love it and are very touchy. So it's a mix of culture and personnality.
I have also been to the country side with my Korean friends. That was a huge difference, yes. The country side is very calm and quiet.

I guess I'm a Koreaboo then because I'm practicing Korean daily, I teaching English to a class of Korean teens online each week, and I googled a local Christian Korean congregation so I could go to church and see what it's like to worship in Korean. It was an event where anyone in attendance can stand and introduce themselves and say what's on their kind or heart regarding being grateful to God for this or that blessing in their lives. I decided to try getting up to stand in front of them all, I introduced myself in Korean, and I explained that I found Korean music and dramas during a time when I could not stop crying after my mom passed away. So, it was kind of my way of giving my thanks and also showing my appreciation to the Koreans there for the beauty of the culture and everything I'm learning. All of this has helped to bring me out of a sadness and anxiety that I couldn't handle before the past 2 years when I found BTS.
Oh, and after the meeting, 10 or 11 people came to meet me and thanked me for speaking. They told me I was very brave and they invited me to come again whenever I want to. Two Korean women asked for my number and gave me their numbers. One said she would like to invite me to her home, and the other said she will help me learn Korean if I help her learn English. It was a really surprising time because I was nervous they wouldn't want me to be there. But everyone was very warm, welcoming, and kind.

I had the cutest experience with a panicked ajumma in a small grocery store :) she tried her best at asking if I wanted a plastic bag in english so I answered "yes" in korean :D Hahaha she was so relieved that I knew some korean and told me that her husband usually deals with the foreigners but he was not there that day :) It made for a really fun and cute memory and she praised me for buying and liking kimchi hahaha
People were very friendly and helpful when I was there. Being able to read Hangeul helped quite a bit even if I didn’t know what every word meant. Knowing some conversational Korean was good also. It broke the ice and I felt like people genuinely appreciated my effort especially older Koreans. South Korea is a beautiful country and the mixture of the old and new side by side in places like Seoul is amazing to see and experience. Can’t wait to visit again and spend some more time exploring Busan and Jeju.
Thank you for answering the 40 questions. And yes you should have many more like this one cause I would really want to ge t to know Korea and Koreans as well as posible. I"m totally proud of Koreans because you all work so hard, yes there may be a few bad apples but then again who's perfect and of course no one is perfect no matter where we are from we all make mistakes. Exactly, that’s what i like about Korean culture. There’s a reason why they’re one of the safest countries in the world, no teen pregnancies, they get married when they’re prepared, can stay out at night without much worries,etc. While other people think they still socially live in the 50’s, I think morals and values don’t have to change. Of course, like in everything they’re not perfect and maybe there a few things that can be handle better. But I think the same as you about not wanting SK to get “contaminated” with the western culture.

At the same time though, the US is still speaking about issues that we here in Sweden solved many decades ago, like abortion. Compared to Korea, the US is ahead of Korea in terms of social issues etc, but is still behind in many things compared first world countries in Europe, mostly Nordic countries.

Good questions and good answers. I've considered SK as a retirement location. Mainly for its better health care and that its a safer country than pretty much almost anywhere. (crime rate is amazingly low.)
This is why I love this channel. I love learning about a country from the people who live there.
For the sat/act I heard that UC’s are not going to need those test scores as an admission requirement moving on. But it is option to include if you want too.
I think such videos are very important especially for those thinking of visiting SK.
Also i think the mis communication and misunderstanding question shld be treated deeply to hlp foreigners.

2:55 I was drinking/dancing with a female Korean friend in a bar in Seoul when she suddenly fainted! I was so surprised! >< I don't think they put something inside her drink as we drank the same and it was not much... anyway I had to piggyback her outside of the bard and around the streets to find a cab to send her home.

The background music is too loud, it is really hard to hear you. Probably a lot of people listen this kind of videos like listening to a podcast (with a bt headset, without looking at the screen, doing some robotic thing while giving attention to the speech. But when the bg music is too loud, that makes it really hard to focus (because you do not see the people's mouth or face to support your hearing). So it would be nice if you turn it down a bit when it comes to this kind of chatting videos

I'm sorry, I do like this channel, but saying "I'm a man, I don't know much about this.... I thought that it was exaggerated" seemed like gaslighting to me. Why is it that when women speak up, people (mostly men) think that they're trying to be victims? It's like, men don't want to accept their privilege in society.
It's obviously not an issue limited to SK, but I do watch videos, Ted Talks and stuff about women from SK, and it's pretty much evident from SK media too about how women are treated there.
I'm from India, and I relate to so many women in SK. When I heard you both say that, I got reminded of the people in my own country who refuse the term "feminism" and think it's not inclusive of men, or who think that men are ones oppressed or even that gender issues don't exist.
There is not "middle ground" when it comes to feminism.
FEMINISM IS SOLELY ABOUT WOMEN AND GIRLS. I MYSELF BEING A FEMALE AM A HARDCORE GYNOCENTRIST AND I FEEL MORE FOR MY OWN GENDER AND I AM BIASED TOWARDS MY OWN GENDER. SORRY IF U FELT BAD BUT NOT EVEN THE ALMIGHTY GOD CAN CHANGE MY MINDSET. BUT I AIN'T A TOTALLY SELFISH PERSON. BESIDES BEING A GYNOCENTRIST OR A WOMAN-CENTRIST, I AM A HUMANITARIAN AS WELL.

I got around fairly okay in Seoul in a wheelchair (back in 2018, actually it was this month in 2018), there were of course SOME issues, but generally since I was only there for a week I got to see most of the things I wanted 💙. The nicest people I came into contact with, forever grateful for their help

I was in Korea in 2019, my experience was a little different with old people. In at least 4 different places they were friendly and using hand gestures we communicated and smiled, one even offered something to drink since we were waiting a long time at the bus stop. Only they were surprised we were from India. Will definitely go and maybe 🚲 next time.

This was great especially since we are planning to visit next year from the US.
Came here after watching the part 2. I remember a woman who ran out her house to help me and my family look for our accommodation. We were just standing on the street trying to read the map and suddenly a woman came out of her house and accompanied us. She said she saw us on her CCTV and we looked lost. 🤣 We were so grateful to her.

Hi guys!!I don't know why there are so many questions about if Korean ppl treat foreigners badly😯 In 2019 I travel to Korea with my 2 sisters and have the greatest time of our lives.. since day one everywhere we went there were people who stop on the street to give us directions or help us carry our baggage, in the subway or buses the ask us our destination and told us when whe should step out... We are from Mexico and speak a little english so we were scared of having a hard time with the language barrier but everyone was so kind and patient with us and tried to understand us and speak to us in english or with signs that we felt so at ease and happy there... once Covid is over I hope we can go back😊🥰💕 you guys are great!! love your videos!!
