Fishing BIG Topwater Lures deep in the Florida Backcountry!

- Working deep into the Florida backcountry helps you find some fish that don't see many boats and the fish are hungry. This means the fish are aggressive to topwater plugs. Here's a recent trip out where I got on to a really good topwater bite!

Bull shark at 3:56 is exactly why I don't put my hands in the water when releasing a fish. I've seen those things come out from under the boat and eat the released fish, that far back you'd be in big trouble if bit.
There's a video on the channel from last year where I had a 7 foot bull come up under my kayak and take a snook right off the bow. I was only in about 2 feet of water at the time and I never knew he was there until he grabbed the fish. I try not to have my hands in the water for too long.
hey man, i’ve always had great luck on a 3 inch gulp swimming mullet with a red quarter ounce standup jig head. Maybe 30 pound leader. Never met a red that didn’t like a gulp bounced on the bottom
I actually just bought a bunch of the swimming mullet. I'll give those a try. Thank you!
Would have been a challenge to get that Red in most situations as it acted like it saw the boat. For me personally I'd do the lightest 3" paddletail or shrimp (like an EZ ShrimpZ) with minimal splash upon entering the water, but for most in that area they'd soak a cut pinfish.
Thanks. I'll try a paddle tail or unweighted EZ Shrimp but see if I can spot the fish a little sooner.
You're absolutely right
@@fishingmilesaway It's sometimes completely unavoidable. I was in Chassahowitzka today and the fish were in such shallow water and it was completely clear. I couldn't get any to take topwater lures seriously, but they swiped at it so I switched to a Wakebait and it worked nicely.
@@longstrangejourney4776 Awesome, I've always wanted to try a wakebait but haven't yet. Are there any wakebaits in particular that you would recommend?
@@fishingmilesaway My personal preference and the one I fished today with is the Yozuri 3DS Wakebait. I have a friend that fishes the Big Bend and he likes the Strike King KVD 2.5". I have both, but prefer the 3DS for the rattle.
I learned about the 3DS from Nate Rich at Southern Salt Kayak Fishing out of Mobile Bay AL. I found it very useful here in the Chassahowitzka NWR as it can be thrown right to the edge of the mangrove line and if you pause the retrieve, it promptly floats to the surface. I'm a Mirrolure Mirrodine fan, but if I have to pause the retrieve on a Mirrodine to mess with the Trolling Motor, it sinks and can hang up on the limestone and oysters.
Usually, even in the rare instance that the Wakebait hooks up on the bottom, the fact that it floats helps dislodge it with a few twitches.
Great stuff man. Free line a live jumbo shrimp hooked through the tail with a small bait hook and light leader. Throw it past him diagonally and lead him by 10 feet. Twitch it towards him so it drops in front of his face. Will eat most time. Can do the same thing with a natural colored fluke and a lil pro cure
Thanks. I’ll try this!
Congrats on 1k subs. Keep up the good work
Thanks! Will do!
Salt Strong Power Prawn Jr. Natural color rigged weedless on a screw lock hook. Cast great even weightless and lands soft. Also, a great bait to blind cast and cover water. Close runner-up would be a ned rig.
I’ve tried the full size Power Prawn but not the Jr, size yet. I’ll give that a try. Thanks!
Love the video, can't wait to see the next one!!
Thank you, coming soon!
Beautiful country. That red was already spooked by the time you saw it. It would have been incredibly unlikely to get it to eat under those conditions. However, given the opportunity, I would have gone with my lightest salt gear which is rated at 8-12 lb with a small grub plastic (1.5 inch).
I've got a real light setup that should work. I'll try the small grub lure with it. Thanks for the advice!
Very nice show, thanks! Looking forward to viewing your next episode.
For the situation you described; either a live shrimp or cut pin fish should entice that red fish to bite
Thanks for the tips! I'll try that.
Cut pinfish… all fins and head snipped off. Free line. Throw it 10 yards in front of em. Seems to work here in Tampa
Nice, I’ll try that! Thanks.
That was a challenging one because the fish popped up already really close to the boat and didn’t hang around long. But I have done really well sightfishing reds with freelined cut bait. I’ll use a 20-30lb fluorocarbon leader and a size 3 gamagatsu nautilus circle hook. I find on days when they don’t seem as interested in artificial or are skittish a nice piece of cut mullet will get them. Tight lines brotha💪
Very cool! I’ve never used cut bait to sight fish. I’ll try that. Thanks!
If an nlbn won’t work, those stubborn reds will always pick up a piece of cut mullet free lined with a light Floro 25lb leader
I haven't used the NLBN yet but seems to be a very popular lure. I'll give it a try!
2.5” zman ned shrimp. High pressured areas I’m throwing 16-12lb leader for reds.
I've tried the Ned Shrimp before and really like it. I have a hard time with casting it though. What rod and reel setup do you use to get some distance?
Just came across your video in my reccomended ones. What area of Fl do you fish? Almost time for those beach snook to be caught.. nice video and new sub to you!
I fish SW Florida but plan on doing a bit of traveling around the state this year. I'm going to start to head out the beach to target those snook probably in the next few weeks. Thanks for the sub!
next video is gonna be 🔥
It's going to be good!
Just found your channel for the first time and it’s funny how similarly we fish! Congrats on hitting 1k, I just hit 1k earlier this week also. Let me know if your ever in the Nature coast area and want to collaborate on a vid 🤙🏽
Thanks so much and congrats to you! Absolutely, let's get together and fish up there and down here. I've never fished the Nature Coast but always wanted to.
@@fishingmilesaway sounds good brother, I’m looking forward to making it happen 🙌🏽!
@AndreasChristouSaltwater me too. Just let me know when and I’ll be there!
@@fishingmilesaway just followed you on Instagram so we can set something up soon
@AndreasChristouSaltwater Sounds Good!
To catch that red I'd use a Carolina rig with a finger mullet.
Really? I've never heard of any Carolina fishing for reds
@@jcreel4055 it's also called a fish finder rig
I'll definitely give that a try!
Yeah we do it all the time for bass. Just never heard or found a time or place to try it for reds
Nosehooked gulp shrimp, no weight for the spooked fish
I'll give that a try! Do you like a J hook or a circle hook through the nose of the Gulp?
@@fishingmilesaway Circle hook. It’s a useful tactic when you see a sight-castable fish while using live shrimp. Just nose hook the gulp and get the reaction strike
Thanks, I'll try that!
Small paddle tail or curly tail plastic. A Buggs lure? For sure not a surface lure. 😝
I've heard about the Buggs lure, I'll have to give it a try! Thanks.
Where you at here?
SW Florida
For that situation with the Red, 3” Gulp shrimp on an unweighted J or Circle hook. Cast a couple feet in front and just dead stick it. If he won’t eat that then he wouldn’t have eaten anything
Thank you. I’m going to try this!
@@fishingmilesaway You’re welcome, good luck!
Fly rod. WS HM up skirt fly!
no treble hooks allowed for Snook or Reds.
I try not to use them but every so often I do. Do you prefer single inlines for top waters?
Swim bait Texas rigged!
I’ll give that a try! Thanks.
Live bait fish if they won’t eat that they won’t eat anything
I was thinking about that. A free-lined sardine perhaps. Thanks for the advice!
You guys and all that sun protection clothing is an absolute joke!
😂 I burn easy!
