  • Here are some of the lessons I learned while using the dog proof traps (DP trap) for raccoons. The Dog Proof trap is the most represented trap I have ever seen.

Thanks guy for all the tips on catching raccoons. I got into trapping these nocturnal animals last year using only live (Havahart) cage traps. Although recently I purchased 2- Dog-Proof traps, I still use the cage but only at my property locations. Now that have a basic idea on how-to set-up DPs and finding a suitable trapping spot, I can venture forth with more confidence in harvesting raccoons.

I've been nuisance trapping coons in my yard for many years... no interest in furs. My favorite trap is a conibear set in a slotted 5 gal bucket. Extremely effective and deadly...but indiscriminate. I've thinned the feral cat population, and taken other nuisance critters. Any animal prowling my yard between 10:00 PM and 5:00 AM is "fair game" as far as I'm concerned. One summer I took out 32 raccoons in my yard....... I don't talk about it for obvious reasons. I've used the dog proof traps with good success, and like you, I use a 22 caliber silenced pellet rifle (PCP with 7 shot magazine) to dispatch them. I also use a live trap of the Have-a-Heart style for skunks... and small coons, and I have built a very large live trap from Lowes Garden Center style wire shelving. 2x2x4 feet dimension. It runs on 120 volt AC, using a solenoid to drop the guillotine style door (singe door), and uses a motion detector. Originally I used a bait pan and a micro switch, until a big boar coon literally ripped the bait pan out of the trap. Problem I've had is coons "plowing" the yard around the trap. I'm building a simple electric fence charger to make the floor hot... cage ground, when the trap trips to keep them inside the trap. The motion detector trap works wonderfully. I've caught two large coons in the last 3 nights. I have food out for birds... especially magpies (dry dog food), which is generally gone by mid day, but it still draws them in, so this is an ongoing campaign.

Trapping videos are so full of contradiction it's funny.....I literally just watched a video before this one saying u can stick the trap in the ground and piss on it and catch a coon. Then this video says it's completely 100% inaccurate. I'm new to trapping but have been an outdoorsman my whole life and just don't believe that a raccoon is that finicky especially compared to a coyote, fox or bobcat. I also know everyone has opinions and what works for one may not work for another but that's just my thoughts.

  • @alanpeterson2160

Would it be possible to use these dog proof traps for raccoons where there are bobcats around and not have to worry about accidentally catching a bobcat ? Would sweet bait like marshmallows help prevent catching bobcats ?

      Connor Matthews
Hey Connor! Just came across your question! That's way too much for two DP's. You can buy EZ DP's for anywhere from $12 - $15 / each! I've been trapping for over 35 years, and my dad before that! I now do animal nuisance control and predator patrol! I'm selling a bunch of my smaller traps and trapping equipment at the moment! Just sticking with mostly the coyotes and beaver nuisance trapping mainly!
But yes, please shop around, for better prices before buying! If you're looking to buy new, I recommend getting yourself a catalog from
"F&T Fur Harvester's and Trading Post"
They have awesome equipment and great prices!
      Good luck this season!

Okay so this guys not wrong but he isn't right. You can very well just throw bait in one set it and catch coon. The biggest thing of trapping any animal tho is finding that animal blind sets work sometimes but if the animal isn't around you can't catch it. Now why he's talking about mink and stuff I don't know the whole point of a dp trap is coon. Bait speaking and lure well its a coon, they will eat anything that smells or is sweet so grab some cereal or salmon pack it under the trigger and set it in a location that you know coon are in and you will 100% catch them. There is no learning curve with a dp trap you don't need to know how to brush it in or how to scent it correctly or tension to set it at you don't need 5 tools. You need something to keep it where it is so a stake, anchor or even a rope tied to a tree. Bait and coon. Find a creek or water way find a coon track anchor that dp down makebit smell with you're Bait and set it. It's that hard.
