- Here are some of the lessons I learned while using the dog proof traps (DP trap) for raccoons. The Dog Proof trap is the most represented trap I have ever seen.

I love how serious you are. I can tell you no what you're doing
From a fellow Wisconsinite and a newbie trapper: Thank you! I've just bought DP traps for the farm because lots of dogs around, and it's always nice to get tips and tricks for use.
Excellent video! You told my story to a tee in the struggle with the DP.
Smart little tips.....listen kiddies...this guy did the work...Thanks Sir !!!
Good tip on that old school dog proof design with the plywood board!! Awesome
Sam! Really enjoy your stuff! You always are in laymens terms! I too use Lenon's lures for the last 45 yrs!! I will not trap without them! So glad John Chagnon continues to make them!! Keep up your videos!! We all need them!! Thanks again!!
Thanks for taking the time to do these kind of videos. Can't wait to try out these tips.
Thanks guy for all the tips on catching raccoons. I got into trapping these nocturnal animals last year using only live (Havahart) cage traps. Although recently I purchased 2- Dog-Proof traps, I still use the cage but only at my property locations. Now that have a basic idea on how-to set-up DPs and finding a suitable trapping spot, I can venture forth with more confidence in harvesting raccoons.
Keep them coming! I enjoy all the videos. This is Another good one!
"You're gonna get lucky, and you're gonna feel proud but, " lol.
I've been nuisance trapping coons in my yard for many years... no interest in furs. My favorite trap is a conibear set in a slotted 5 gal bucket. Extremely effective and deadly...but indiscriminate. I've thinned the feral cat population, and taken other nuisance critters. Any animal prowling my yard between 10:00 PM and 5:00 AM is "fair game" as far as I'm concerned. One summer I took out 32 raccoons in my yard....... I don't talk about it for obvious reasons. I've used the dog proof traps with good success, and like you, I use a 22 caliber silenced pellet rifle (PCP with 7 shot magazine) to dispatch them. I also use a live trap of the Have-a-Heart style for skunks... and small coons, and I have built a very large live trap from Lowes Garden Center style wire shelving. 2x2x4 feet dimension. It runs on 120 volt AC, using a solenoid to drop the guillotine style door (singe door), and uses a motion detector. Originally I used a bait pan and a micro switch, until a big boar coon literally ripped the bait pan out of the trap. Problem I've had is coons "plowing" the yard around the trap. I'm building a simple electric fence charger to make the floor hot... cage ground, when the trap trips to keep them inside the trap. The motion detector trap works wonderfully. I've caught two large coons in the last 3 nights. I have food out for birds... especially magpies (dry dog food), which is generally gone by mid day, but it still draws them in, so this is an ongoing campaign.
Thank you for taking the time to make this video, I learned a lot.
Excellent video for a beginner like me. Thanks for taking the time to make this.
You sound like Chris Farley! Love it!
Hi Sam , love watching you're trapping , cooking and sling bows videos , great job Sam love you're down to earth approach and attitude , oh please keep them cooking videos where you torture Melissa eating new things , she's such a good sport to try every thing you give her 😃. Cheers from the land down under (Australia ) 😃
I have heard of the old school dog proof techniques before but I use 5 gallon bucket lids they are more durable and not as bulky as the plywood
Ok
Thank you! I’m going to try some trapping for the first time ever this year. Your videos have improved my knowledge a hundredfold (100 x 0 is still 0)
Just now seeing this and new at this. Thank you for this info man. Subscribed!!
I set my traps with no sign and catch possums so I'm kind of a pro
Sure
Same bro
You are the last of a dying breed. Just wish there were more of you. Most guys your age are walking into poles looking at their cell phones. Great video ! GRIZ
I'm glad i found you .your just plane Honest Thank you
Nice video man I agree with what you said the 1.5 is better for beginners

Great tips Sam and thanks for sharing.
Spring footholds are illegal in NJ so DP are the go too or move to old reliable with snares
I just bought a few DP's and also new to trapping. I prepped all my foot holds and bodygrip traps what is your recommendations for the DP trap prep.
Hey Sam big fan when do you think you will do another long trapping video? The last one you did was a big help to me. I was just wondering if you found any new tips and tricks to show us to help us on our trap line. Thanks
I have a pond I am thinking about setting a few around it.Whats your advice on setting them around my pond?
hey great videos could you do a video on the trap tweezers or what kind of dp trap setters do you prefer for someone like me who has no hand strength anymore due to diabetes
Very informing I like your videos you need to put out some more
Awesome, thank you for the tips.
great tips! Thanks for the detailed vid.
Any tips for catching possums? I suspect I have one or more that are decimating my ducks.
thanks for the lessons
Can you anchor these without the cables
You seem like a good trapper. Good tips thank you.
I have had good luck with those traps just stuck in my back yard with black licorice for bait.
Great video bud
Great video man, thanks.
Fish oil tip is key
I fill DPs close to the top because of the mice, squirrel and chippers like to have a free meal 😊
Put that trap at a deer feeder different story
Seriously, I had over 30 on my plot this year every night, time to cull.
Maybe using 5 pail lids with hole in center? but they would have to be sanded smooth so they dont damage the fur//
You got some excellent advice, thank you
Great video and good tutorial..
Good advice! Good tips Sam!!
I am thinking about buying some but I have one question. Could I get my finger caught in the dog proof trap when I am setting it??
Deer Hunter are you a dog?
great teaching ....cheers
hey sam thanks for the tip
I learned something today!
Thanks for the tips they make sense
Hey can you do a video on setting a number two stop loss trap
i have to use a dog proof im just starting trapping and i have cats barn cats i have a creek near my house is that a good place to put a dp trap
F&T nor PCS carries Lennon's lure. Can you tell me where you buy it??
Thank you Mr. Barlow.
Sam I've watched most of your videos on trapping and cheap and easy is your thing... cool grabber... swap that out for a cheap $1 a lb butterscotch hard candy. Put that thing in your mouth just long enough to get it good and sticky. Work it flat to the bottom and fill with cat food... After it dries only the mice can get it out
Great videos, i have my burger kings set up !
Good stuff👍🤘👊thanks man
I caught 15 racoons in my randomly set trap. I live on a partially wooded acre in the country.
Maybe I'm catching them because I have chickens?
enjoyed the video , keep em comming .
Great video, thanks.
That's funny, cuz all I did was use a little cat food and stake it in the ground.. I have cought 13 in two months.....lol it ain't just what people say they actually did work just like that!
do those traps hurt the legs because i have cats around and a "little bit of cat food a little bit of dog food somthin like that" will defiantly attract the cats
HAtE C00nz cats don't really like these traps and it just grabs the arm doesn't snap it
It's a non issue. I've caught one farmer cat before, and after I reset, it caught itself again before I turned my back. It obviously doesn't hurt them.
Use marshmallow
Good Video, but I buy american made traps. I just retired and took up trapping 3 years ago so I'm still building my line. But all the traps I have are American made. Mostly MB's . But that's just me.Keep up the video's I'm learning a lot from you.
I've actually caught grey foxes in these traps. I used dog food and sardines for bait.
very helpful, God bless, subscribed....
Trapping videos are so full of contradiction it's funny.....I literally just watched a video before this one saying u can stick the trap in the ground and piss on it and catch a coon. Then this video says it's completely 100% inaccurate. I'm new to trapping but have been an outdoorsman my whole life and just don't believe that a raccoon is that finicky especially compared to a coyote, fox or bobcat. I also know everyone has opinions and what works for one may not work for another but that's just my thoughts.
Would it be possible to use these dog proof traps for raccoons where there are bobcats around and not have to worry about accidentally catching a bobcat ? Would sweet bait like marshmallows help prevent catching bobcats ?
Alan Peterson yes
If you see their foot prints is that a good spot to set your trap?
Naw’s Outdoor’s better than a place with no foot prints
Hey Sam, which trap is better a duke dp trap or a push and pull dp trap? Pls let me know
Naw’s Outdoor’s I don’t like the push pull triggers
@samwoodoutdoors ohh well thanks for your answer and quick question is the duke dog proof worth of $30 something?
Worth every dime
do you use the lennons and fish oil together or seperatly
+Robert Slogeris Together.. I put a little Lennons raccoon all call on the trap and squirt fish oil around it
River.. ?. U mean stream, is very small but a lively spot no doubt,,,,. I just bought 6 z traps, cant wait ti get them in the ground, i need fleshing knife and i am set to start setting,...i wan5 to make clothing from my furs, am investing in commercial sewing machine and the rest is history,. Im thinking, hats, mittens, coats And Blankets and pillows. Im not giving my furs away to anyone for peanuts,... i use to do furniture upholstery so i have background in sewing,... im getting mb550,. I looked at dukes and actually had 12 delivered to my home but what un-tunable junk, sent them back, going with the best on the market,,. My body my trap, lol.....i plan on doing some calling with my new predator caller,i like shooting them as well, guess i will use some kills for bait and. Then amass. A. Bait. Pile..... my main desire is to catch , trap bobcats , they are the biggest bang for the buck i feel, best looking pelt to me,...... like your. Content learning alot, thanks bro,,,,peace,,,,michigan here,.....tim

They like fish oil problem is with dog catfood is it 4 most part already has fishoil in it when made lil goes along way like salt
Thanks for the tips
+ryangriff12 thanks for watching.
I have gone to stores that sell traps and their is two dp traps their and they are $37.98 is that expensive for two?
Connor Matthews
Hey Connor! Just came across your question! That's way too much for two DP's. You can buy EZ DP's for anywhere from $12 - $15 / each! I've been trapping for over 35 years, and my dad before that! I now do animal nuisance control and predator patrol! I'm selling a bunch of my smaller traps and trapping equipment at the moment! Just sticking with mostly the coyotes and beaver nuisance trapping mainly!
But yes, please shop around, for better prices before buying! If you're looking to buy new, I recommend getting yourself a catalog from
"F&T Fur Harvester's and Trading Post"
They have awesome equipment and great prices!
Good luck this season!
Connor Matthews I get mine all day at rural king for 11.99, ztraps brand.
Do you make your fish oil or buy it
Jason Miller buy it
I use the z traps and freedom brand fb1s, both are push pull triggers , their more accurate than pull only
+Trapper Cody not true
well I have had WAY better luck in the pull trigger but I only run about 7 dozen of them so you may be right.. you will catch more possum and have more spurn traps with the Z trap
+Sam Wood Outdoors I agree. I run a mix of ztraps and mostly dukes. my duke numbers are way higher. It was so noticeable I tried setting them side by side and duke out performed them 90 % of the time
+trapperhammer lol that is what i tell every body some get it some don't..
Can you catch a fox in a pull dog proof?
21 minutes?
never trapped in my life..1st nite i put it out to catch my garbage ninja..got his furry butt
I'll put these tips to the test! lol
Thanks Buddy I love down to earth people not a salesmen.
That river is a creek correct?
a brook where I come from
What do you mean push pull traps? DP1?
Triggers fire trap if they are pushed or pulled. True DP traps have a pull trigger
How cost these trap
What ever is legal in your state
They have to run into it. Like a snare or body grip.
I've trapped off my harley alot of times lol
thanks
Okay so this guys not wrong but he isn't right. You can very well just throw bait in one set it and catch coon. The biggest thing of trapping any animal tho is finding that animal blind sets work sometimes but if the animal isn't around you can't catch it. Now why he's talking about mink and stuff I don't know the whole point of a dp trap is coon. Bait speaking and lure well its a coon, they will eat anything that smells or is sweet so grab some cereal or salmon pack it under the trigger and set it in a location that you know coon are in and you will 100% catch them. There is no learning curve with a dp trap you don't need to know how to brush it in or how to scent it correctly or tension to set it at you don't need 5 tools. You need something to keep it where it is so a stake, anchor or even a rope tied to a tree. Bait and coon. Find a creek or water way find a coon track anchor that dp down makebit smell with you're Bait and set it. It's that hard.
Yo chicken broth works great for a lure and it's cheap
Nice to see a non-salesman video.
That close to the city I wouldn't set 160s . To much chance of catching someone's pet ..
he's very dramatic
What are you from?
every year i get more animals that by some miracle steal by bait and never get caught. i do catch with them, but have more get-a-ways than ever. birds maybe?? i can't figure it out....aand i'm setting them hair trigger!
lmao it's a stream not a river
I placed one by water I caught a raccoon on the second day with only sweet corn
Is Sam still alive??? anyone know?????
Don't know how much trapping he's doing now. But he works up in the oil fields.
