I miss the 90s and prior. Information wasn't bombarding you from all directions at all times. No social media. Widespread internet adoption in it's infancy. No one monitoring or tracking your location and preferences. There was a type of freedom that simply doesn't exist nowadays.

@@RomanDiaries Y’all should be worried about them stealing info n selling it, that’s closer to taking away freedom. OP was talking about how there’s too much info n there’s location tracking, which is just used for giving you info relevant to your location. Acting like all that takes away freedom when really people born in the 70s n 80s just don’t like change n just wanna complain. I mean all this stuff is helpful n if you want to you can get a cheap phone, turn off location tracking, n just use it for texting n email. I just don’t understand how any of it takes away freedom

It was only like 10% booked because most people were afraid that all the planes dependent on computers to fly would crash, we stretched out on the 5 seats in the many empty rows in the middle section in economy class and enjoyed multiple free beers

Yep. I was in college at the time here in the UK doing a computer course. Oddly I never remember them bringing this up so when my brother in law asked a quiz question in a paper the answer was about Y2K but I'd not heard. And yes, nothing happened as lots of engineers fixed the issues before and some got paid lots to do overtime in case systems went down.

My dad recalls cutting the electricity at a Y2K New Year party he was at, and everyone at the party was terrified. Luckily he's an electrician, so he knew how to do it safely. Gotta love pranks haha
Edit: Dang it, I wish I knew more details. I remember my dad told the story, he seemed so proud of himself lol. I just remember him saying there was quite a panic, until he turned the lights back on 2 minutes later. My mom claimed she didn't remember, but scoffed at his 'immaturity'. My dad's always so serious, so it's nice hearing his sense of humor. But yeah, that's actually how I (born in 2000) even found out there was a Y2K panic.
Double edit: I know it wasn't at my dad's house. It was at his friends house. But there was a ton of people there. I don't think anyone had a panic attack or anything, but they were definitely flipping out!

At least that IBM 4694 was patched, unlike some older legacy EPOS systems that rolled back to the starting epoch and printed erroneous dates when Y2K happened. This was particularly of concern in the UK where many retail chains rushed out and renewed their systems, but some did hold on to their old equipment, like the John Lewis department stores. I looked beyond Y2K then and enjoyed seeing and watching all the New Years Eve get togethers across the whole world with massive crowds of many thousands getting together to celebrate new millennium accompanied with seeing many famous international landmarks through out the world all lit up to celebrate the brand new millennium as well amongst all the AWESOME futuristic special effects, AWESOME light shows, spiced up fireworks and pyrotechnic, many famous bands playing with many exciting concerts and dancing and special show stunts and that all was an AWESOME historic time where the whole world came together as one. Looking at Y2K now, it seems like that whole scary thing that was SUPPOSE to happen was more of a foreshadowing of what's to come this century. HOPING the next century is MORE peaceful, respectable, and QUIET.

Was there a sign outside the door warning customers there would be filming in the store? Being filmed like that can be uncomfortable or cringe (except for security cameras which are necessary). It gets awkward when the camera zooms in on people's faces and showing the cash register screen which shows what the customer is purchasing. An interesting and fun way to view history decades later, and very thankful for sharing, but was curious if customers were told of the filming before going in the store.

"Mysterious Bible Codes" oh man, thanks to the jerks who wrote those awful Left Behind novels for popularizing this garbage. The pre-millennium years were full of this crap, but at least back then the misinformation was mostly harmless.

Y2K was the 2nd biggest scare/con job in history.. Made Billions of $ from goods sold.. Wife and I stood in line for 25 minutes at a Convenient store just to buy a case of beer.. Line at grocery store was 2 hours/we left.. #1 being the Mayan Calendar 12/21/12.. I almost got hit, multiple times, by people texting and driving in Nov. and Dec. 2012.. Then it let up.. Hmm, imagine that :^)
