It's always fun to watch a gushingly positive review! if you haven't read the rest of Cronin's oeuvre, it's worth your time. The Summer Guest is one of the best books in the genre I consider "The Great American novel." And Mary and O'Neill, his first book, is a great collection of interconnected short stories. I think Cronin is one of the most underrated authors out there. Thanks for the review!

I loved this story. Whilst I did guess where it was going fairly early on that did not take away from the world building, characters and overall delivery of how it got to where it was going.

I totally agree with you about pacing but I loved it as well. I actually would like a follow up novel. I'd like to see what happens to these characters.
I listened to a book recently, and it wasn't the sort I'd usually choose. So one of two things must have happened., either I was drawn to it for the narrator, or it was one of the "Included free with Audible" books. However, there were three main POVs for this short book. One was first person. The second was Third Person and the final was Second person. And it was bizarre, but really added a dimension to a book I may well have forgotten about entirely without the switch. Ok it's not in my library so I guess it was an audible freebie. Can't even give you a name, sorry.
@@Talking_Story I found it. It's called "The Blackout" by Ruth McIver. I don't think there is a paper version, I think it's just a short audible freebie. I listened to break up some David Gemmel fantasy reads. It may well fall short of your standards. It's quick at 5 hours though.

The reveal was 1 of my working theories but I had more than 1 going for a good while. So I can't claim to figuring it out. Kudos to you though!

His trilogy was inspired, magnificent so I bought ferryman with great anticipation. It's hard to identify magic but he lost touch with it in ferryman.
