Just booted it up on my, incredibly, still fully functional Ps2. And though hella dated, there is something extremely stylised and unique about MGS1 which means though its polygon city, it really keeps a lot of its appeal.
I was there in 1998 when this game dropped. To this day, it’s remained my favorite game of all time. Even thou the gameplay is dated by modern standards, I feel like that is also part of it’s charm. The over the head view point. The blocky graphics. The constricting control scheme. It doesn’t matter. The heart and soul of this game has remained to this day. The story. The voice acting. The music. The characters. The cutscenes. All of it just felt so ahead of it’s time and felt like EVERYONE gave it their A+ effort. I play this game once a year on my PS2 because of the impact this game made on me. I bought a copy of Sons of Liberty, before I had a PS2, because I HAD to know what happened next. Rumors of a remake have come and gone, if a proper one from the ground up happens, then I say bring it on. If not, then I worry not. For I was there to experience a game that defines a genre to this very day and I can’t thank Kojima enough for bringing this game to the masses. Thank You for this video. I’m so glad to know that there are people out there who truly care about this game as I do.
I didn't really know or care about the metal gear solid games until you started playing the metal gear solid game on the let's play channel really love metal gear solid game now.
@@randomnerd3402 I get lost all the time in 2. The whole map feels like a maze. I still like it but I've beat it once and started it 3 other times I always get lost or forget what I'm doing later which is my fault
I always figured Snake was sorta based on Nick Fury, because they look the same, have multiple versions of themselves (life model decoys for fury) and are these relics of war that can't mentally leave that place. Maybe it's a huge coincedence.
Played this before it came out when it was on the demos that Pizza Hut had. There was a Japanese one and the American one. One of them ended when you went up the elevator and one when you snuck into one of the vents. So when it released I was 6, on the PS1 and been playing the series ever since. My favorite series of all time!
Still the best game to date for me. Been gaming for 30 years. And played this first when i was 11. Anyone get deep nostalgic hit playing MGS 4 and revisting Shadow Moses? That was just something else. Unbelievable...
I may be speaking for the whole series but what makes these games so special is its passion and characters. These characters are broken to begin with they all struggled and suffered and if they can overcome that brokenness. Something people can relate to and why these characters don’t feel like characters they feel like a old friend which why it will always have a mark in gaming history. I also think it’s community that also helps it stand out. 6 years have passed and no new installment has been made and yet here we are still talking about it; we talk about its themes, characters, story and theories. Next to Mr.Kojima MGS fans are the most passionate about it keeping its memory alive.
its not only one of the best games of all time, but it was the greatest game of all time when it came out and it was so ahead of its time in terms of presentation
Whats really interesting about metal gear solid 1 and the series as a whole is the "metal gear robot" itself.the design, concept and the idea that kojima and his team came up with is scary its as if it was based off a real life military weapon.can you imagine if a country actually developed a nuclear weapon similar to metal gear ?
God the graphics are so charming anf pretty, and i might be wrong but from what i think metal gear solid 1&2 were so ahead of it‘s time in some aspects. The dialogue was really smooth for the time and the stealth was really good. Obviously some mechanics were still a little wonky but that’s nothing unusual for the time. I just recently got into the second game and i played it on the ps2. I died and was so frustrated because it has been a while since i have saved but what i found absolutely insane was the fact that it auto saved? I never played a game on the ps2 that had auto save before! The characters were interesting and not so flat and some of the character representation ( such as queer and poc characters) was really great! The games deeply fascinated me and it was a story that is really unique
If I may "Um Ackshually" you, the NES didn't actually get the original 2 Metal Gear games, Metal Gear NES was a shoddy port missing huge amounts of content, and it got an entirely different sequel, titled Metal Gear 2: Snake's Revenge and wasn't made by Kojima at all I think it's an interesting little fact
Not even a Metal Gear fan. Just saw that you put a lot of work into it so I wanted to give you a view and a like. Hope everyone who sees this is having a good day.
This is a very well made analysis on MGS, but I think that you have both greatly understated the importance of the first two Metal Gears. MGS didn’t do that much in the veins of revolutionary game design. Most of the mechanics were prototyped in Metal Gear. The mechanics were then further refined in Metal Gear 2. The mechanics in MGS are actually not all that different than what they were in Metal Gear 2 besides the added third dimension. The crazy story telling styles were also already in Metal Gear 2. MGS polished everything, but it’s not nearly as radical. I would be very curious to see you both run though Metal Gear 2 on the MSX and give an analysis of that game.
Actually the second game of the nes is not the actual mg2 but a completely different game which Kojima wasn’t even related to. Also I don’t think snake was ever a mascot of PlayStation but more one of those guys like Leon Kennedy or Cloud which franchises are very related to PlayStation but not quite mascot characters, more just representative icons from that console. Also I don’t really think it should be called a masterpiece, the same way I don’t think any games should be called that, because it holds very little value now a days when everyone just throws it into what ever they want without really being much meaningful.
I definitely think MGS1’s graphics are very charming and iconic
Same here 😊

What makes metal gear solid special? Simple, it has the best videogame character ever created
Deepthroat
He's a deep historical reference, an analogy of modern humor and just plain amusing all rolled into one.

Yeah I try to do whatever length fits the topic. This one was longer. I have some shorter ones this next week coming up too. It really just depends.

Also MGS 3ds is the best version of that game
I'd agree if it wasn't so limited by the resolution and technology of the 3ds. I'd rather just play it in the Legacy or HD collections
