    On a homestead RUclips channel in the United States on the East Coast a gentleman put in an automatic waterer for his pigs. He screwed it into a plastic barrel and the pigs just hit a little lever on the water and they get water out of it. The pig seem to learn how to use this very very quickly. Just sharing information. It looks like your setup is a great setup also. Which serves your chickens and pigs. Good luck with all your projects

    Good video Simeon, sorry to hear that the pigs didn't get along. I don't know anything about pig hierarchy but there appears to be one. Glad to hear the egg production hasn't dropped with the introduction of pigs and more electric wires. Environment changes can be tricky. Thanks!

    If you want them warm up to you. Start carrying sweet treats with you. Or fruit or such. And they will start following you like puppies. If my hogs get out all my daughter has to do is grab a 5 gallon bucket and they will follow her anywhere

    Great video, I love the intro. I absolutely understand the importance of teaching the pigs how to be a pig that digs...my chickens get so spoiled that they often forget how to scratch around in their deep litter out in the run. I have to use a pitchfork and turn things over of them, then they act like...Oh yeah, I can do this too!
    Love your channel!

    you guys got really good Craftsman skills you've been taught in early age how to reinforce things when you build it that feeder like you did and I saw that and you guys have a special gift for working with wood so that this something Swedish people have it's good to learn it though because I saw what you were doing makes sense to make a chicken feeder like that with smaller containers and that way you can fill them up when you go on vacation or something your animals can get fed

    Forgot to mention..Nice job on the gravity pig feeder. Best to use for smaller pigs, your larger pigs will ruin it unless you can find a way to secure it well.

    I was so sorry and surprised with the attack from older pigs and discussed it with my dad-the whole life big farm chief zootechnician. He said pig killing attack is not only case of heritage breed. Connection new pig pieces into one groups have strict rules. Always connect peaces with similar size and by connecting two or more previous herds the number of each group must be the same or similar in large quantities.
    FOR YOUR CONNECTING DIFFERENT SIZES is recommended temporary neighbor stall with hard fence and for assuring before final connection to odor both groups (heritage and hybrid) with the same smell. It means on the base of smelling create feeling they are the same group.
    On the farm with only hybrid pigs when accidentaly a one escaped and reached the other stall, the stall residents pigs killed him.

  • @timkirkpatrick9155
    @timkirkpatrick9155 7 лет назад +2

    Simeon, When you do try to reintroduce the pigs, mix their bedding from one group to the other to confuse their smells. Then allow some edge contact time without full contact. pens in proximity works, just reinforce the boundary for safety.
    last make sure they have the same diet.

  • @IslandExoticsHomestead
    @IslandExoticsHomestead 7 лет назад +10

    It's important to keep pigs of the same (or very similar) size together. NEVER place piglets in pen with grown or much bigger pigs or they WILL kill the smaller pigs. Only exception is if they were born within the pig herd. You were lucky to be able to save that piglet before the larger pigs killed it. Water nipples are best for pigs as eventually the pigs snouts will not fit in the bowl waterer, as they will chew the hose or rip it off eventually. (Yes I know from experience) Pigs are VERY curious and can get into everything!

  • @lindapolle1665
    @lindapolle1665 7 лет назад +1

    Check out "watering nipples" for pigs and chickens. They keep the water clean and they are thrifty. But , but remember it is the moisture that makes the composting in the lower layers. Your moving the position of the feed and water helps spread out this bacterial/fungi culture. May I suggest if you plumb in your watering system [time saver] that you keep the ability to move it around [swivel connections].
    Notice too, eating stimulates deffication and urination. This also feeds the lower levels of composting. The biological mistake of many confinement systems is that they do not adequately integrate the two. Your way is good.
    The reason why your pigs wait for you to open the ground, is that the smell stimulates them, and they do not want you [ the alpha pig] to get all the good stuff. Pigs, gotta love them.

    I wondered about buying a bag of nuts and poking a hole in the ground, dropping a nut in and then 'burying it' might encourage the pigs to dig a bit more? Someone might have mentioned this already. Feeder/water seems to work great there, nice job..

    try getting a plastic leaf rake and start by scratching them. It won't take long before they run up when you are goiing to 'beat them up' with the rake. If they are still shy put it where they can walk under it and scratch, it works with piglets. Start them young. Peanuts are a wonderful way to get them approaching you. They love the salted roast ones especially but all peanuts are like a drug for them... Cheers.. :)

      No problem. To be honest I like the jacket but wouldn't order it again. It is dry clean which makes it a bit hard and it is not as durable as the other clothes they have. I have 2 of the, because the first one broke after a while. I am looking into Pfanner's other work jackets.

    Surprised that your heritage breed didn't like the other smaller one! Kinda crazy to think about, especially with how big they are.
    Bet it took a lot to separate them both. Glad you had the time to save it.
    It's awesome they've started digging too! Hopefully they will learn how to aerate the soil on their own. Glad they're running around, They seem happy and willing to navigate over towards you.
    I wonder what characteristics they have between seasons? Hopefully they become more active the warmer it gets, and they've conditioned the soil. Will you move the greenhouse to another area when it warms up so you have a seasonal garden up and going in that spot as well? Almost seems likely, but I'm not sure. Don't want to speak for you. :)

    Your pig smelled different to the rest of the group. So they harassed it. Stress will kill a pig. I don't know if you have a disinfectant in Sweden called Jeyes Fluid, but its smelly stuff. Mix up a weakish solution in a watering can and spray the entire group of pigs. They now all smell the same, by the time the disinfectant smell has worn off, the new pig is accepted into the group. Usually! :D

      We sort-of do the same with chickens. We use garlic powder! We sprinkle the coop, the existing chickens, and the new chickens (after a responsible quarantine period!), making sure to get the powder down in between their feathers, to their skin. It's totally safe for them (even healthy, as it's just dried garlic!), and they all smell the same to each other and smell like they belong to the coop. Then, at night, after they go to roost, we move the new ones in and set them on the roosts with the existing ones. Works beautifully!

      Hmm. When you have music which is as rich in tone and full sounding like the guitar here it will seem to blast out in comparison to the thinner distant sound of the voice, making it seem really loud. It (music) possibly is a wee bitty too loud but I am spoiled with studio quality monitors which give me the full audio spectrum where a not so full small speaker or headphones might accentuate the hard frequencies of the guitar. RUclips will process the sound somewhat as well which will compress it and try to 'even' out the levels so what ends up on here might well not be what was mixed on the homestead and posted up. My advice would be to mix rich music like this so it is -10 to -8 db on the meters and to try for -2 or -3 max on the thinner voice and general mic audio. See how that works. I am only guessing here, trying to remember audio levels from when I used to 'bugger aboot' with sound.. P.S. no need to reply, just trying to help :)
