  • World's BEST Pig Waterer for Under $100 - Automatic Pig Waterer.
    Today I'm showing how we build the world's best automatic pig waterer for under $100. This simple waterer costs under $100 in materials and we were able to build it in under an hour.
    This waterer will be used in our pastured pig operation where we grow high quality pastured pork.
    Materials include an IBC tote, a few pieces of simple plumbing, some lumber for a platform and a float valve for water flow control.
    The float valve can be found on Amazon: amzn.to/30Gvl12
    We found and copied this design from Jordan Green at Farmbuilder. His channel can be found at: / @farmbuilder

    I wonder if it would be worth taking the plastic that you cut out and maybe drill a few holes at the top, attach it with wire and make it kind of a swing door. Maybe that would help keep them from getting all the way in and keep more debre out.
    Also, I feel like if it becomes an issue with the pigs getting in and messing with the float valve pvc piece, maybe you could move it back the the rear of the tote a secure it to the back wall. Probably do that with a few elbows or maybe even drill an new spot up top.

    And add in the cost of water hoses. Where the pigs or going here we need about 1,500' of hose. I like this pig waterer and will probably setup a gravity bulk tank for water so the hose run will be one to two hundred feet at the most. Then find an affordable water tank on a trailer to fill the bulk tank. Gonna need to sell a LOT of bacon!

    Awesome design and love all your videos as I’m preparing to get into this life style next year. Only thing I’d add to the design would be a shit off valve at the end of the hose where it connects to the pvc pipe that way you won’t have to shut off the main source just that like when moving the contraption or if you have a leak due to the pigs breaking the pvc pipe won’t have to run back to shut it off. Keep the videos coming please

    I feel like you could have the same result and have a lot less water waste if you used a smaller container. This one here can only water one pig at a time because of the hole size.. Would be a better idea maybe to take a trough that's got an edge just high enough for the pigs to get their heads in, fill it with some concrete up to about 5 inches from the top, have a wide PVC tube in the middle with some holes drilled in it to house that float valve apparatus, then position it so it would keep the tough filled only a couple of inches high. That way the pigs can get a drink from any direction, it's too heavy to knock over, and the amount of water sitting there collecting dirt spit and mosquitoes is minimal. :)

  • @heartlandacresfarm192

    It is a MUCH better design on the 55 gallon barrel to connect a short 8-12" piece of garden hose to it and then put the nipples on the end of that. That creates a bit of give and so they don't rip the nipples out of the side of the hard plastic tank. This water is filthy and one with cup waterers or nipples would be much better.

  • @kacherjn.baptiste5744
    @kacherjn.baptiste5744 3 года назад +1

    Wound have been better to use the nipple instead of cutting the hole on the tank. Would have had zero water contamination and the pigs wouldn't be able to tamper with the float valve. Still a great idea🖒

      Thinking about a design for the smaller pigs. May use the same style IBC with a shorter front on it. It is self filling so the water level stays the same. Doesn’t need to hold a lot of volume that way. There is a frost free version that we are going to be building soon. That will be our winter version. We do get some freezes but not long stretches of below freezing weather.

    Great video. Where do you find the convertor from the garden hose to the pvc?

    • @SheratonParkFarms
      @SheratonParkFarms  3 года назад

      I bought it at lowes then when we built the second one I couldn't find it so we had to go with another style. Its a 3/4PVC to garden hose connector. Sometimes the folks in the plumbing section will tell you that's not an option but it is. May try a plumbing supply store.

      We turn the water off and drain the hoses. Here in Central NC we don't get days on end below freezing so its not a big issue for us.

    Is there anything to stop the pigs from swimming in it?

    • @SheratonParkFarms
      @SheratonParkFarms  3 года назад

      I’m sure they probably could. The trick I think is making the hole high enough so they can’t easily step in and small enough so they can only get their head in.

      Yes. I have 3 of them now. Work great. We’ve made the inlet pipe on top longer so that it extends past the edge of the tote on top. That’s the only modification.

      I thought maybe you had a particular kind of heating element that you put on the spigot and hose during the winter freezing weather.
