Squeeze is one of those rare bands whose songs you remember hearing, even though you didn't know who they were, because they never got enough radio play.
Saw them at the Masonic temple in Toronto in 1983 and as a musician, they were absolutlely spot on and if I closed my eyes I felt I was listening to the East Side Story Record!
I saw them two nights ago at a warm-up for a national tour. Glenn and Chris are still leading the band. Virtually a greatest hits show, Goodbye Girl, Pulling Mussels From A Shell, and Tempted were the highlights in a tremendous performance.
The Clash did well with what they had to work with. I was disappointed the 3 times that I saw them. Methinks that studio musicians did many of their recordings.
Well...I think here in America they were taken for granted like Nick Lowe, both of whom are terrific. But, The Clash,Costello,Parker,Jackson, and The Jam who since they came on the scene has even come close to their consistency and power? Nobody period!
This has been one of may all time favorite songs ever since I first heard PART of it 1980. It never got much radio play in Los Angeles where I grew up, but I would catch snatches and bits of it here and there, until I finally was able to get the band name and song title. Will forever be one of my favorites. And It was in a dream I had this morning, so I had the good fortune to wake up with it playing in my head, LoL! Way to start the weekend!
I confess that when Squeeze was most active, I didn't really care for them. But years later, I would hear them from time to time and think...wow...that's really impressive. Better late then never, eh?
I've had that experience with a number of bands. Don't like them or ignore them and for no reason several years later I decide they're fabulous! When it's too late to share my discovery )-:
No way, not a chick band. Their early music actually bordered on punk/alternative. Whatever you say, they were the best songwriters to come out of the 80s.
Same here, I was 18 when this song hit the charts and they completely passed me by at the time. Since then I've seen them live 5 times and learned to play some of their songs. The last time I saw them, they were supporting Madness and much as I like Madness, I have to say, the wrong band was headlining :o)
Certain regions of the world have a special love for a particular group. Often, there's a reason. New Jersey it's Springsteen, Long Island / Billy Joel. Other times, there's just something that clicks. The UK will always love Queen. The French had a thing for Supertramp. New York, it was Squeeze. And when they first broke up, they held their farewell concert at Long Island's Nassau Coliseum (one of the few places where they could fill an entire sports arena). Glenn Tilbrook got on stage and actually stated that he had no idea why NY loved them so much but here they were. Neither did I. But the first time I heard this song on the radio, driving on the LI Expressway, the only thing I could do when it was over was shout (out loud and alone) "holy shit!" I was one of those blown-away New Yorkers. There's something about Squeeze that appealed to us and for the life of me I cannot figure out what! But, damn, I love them.
Don't know either but you guys have excellent taste, that's for sure. When Argybargy came out...YES, blown away. While driving in northern NJ and into NYC, I heard "Neil Jung" by Teenage Fan Club on the radio and was blown away as well. They NEVER played that kinda stuff in SW Virginia, where I lived at the time. In the early 80's..."Let it Grow" on the FM, by Eric Clapton...the list goes on and on. I now moved back to MD and have a better chance of visiting my extended family in northern NJ. I love New York...Period.
I was at that Nassau Coliseum show!!! They were great and the Stray Cats opened op for them. (Byran Setzer fell off the stage and broke a wrist). Great memories!!!!!!
That's nuts. Setzer's from Massapequa, you know. Funny thing is that when the Stray Cats first hit the scene, people thought they were British. I personally was never that nuts about them. I also wonder if it might have been LI who loved Squeeze the most. One cool thing was being in this jappy boutique at the Walt Whitman Mall (I'm from Suffolk) with my sister. Argy Bargy was playing on a stereo there and all this one chick did when the album side finished was simply place the needle back at the beginning of the disc. WPLJ played them first, so that meant Westchester and The City. Heck, East Side Story (which I had on cassette) stayed in my car's tape deck for an entire school year. It really did!
I worked in a restaurant when I was 15, washing dishes. The Squeeze tape was played over and over. Even now Squeeze reminds me of food. They should have been more popular than they were.
Loved Squeeze back in the day, i was 15 when this came out on the album, so many happy memories, but also so much time has gone by This performance is just Superb,
Man, I don't know about the rest of you but I kind of miss walking through the music store buying vinyls, that was part of the experience thumbing through them. Now just click and you have it on your hard drive........
I was at this gig it was a freebie via the fan club travelled 200 miles with a mate to see it, not sure how many know this but "Pulling mussels from a shell" is actually a euphemism for cunnilingus "on her tip toes" etc
Such a great time for music - one of my fav bands . You could not help but sing their music and blast it on your car stereo and tape deck or your big oversized boombox walking down the street
This performance is mid 80s - probably 86 - as everyone has slicker hair and suits & the keyboard stacks have got a DX7 in there. They were solid and i still listen to them ad hoc, in the car and via the phone.
My cover band performs this song. Goes over EVERY time! It resonates with young, older, and people who have never heard it before. We're thinking about adding 'Tempted.
This song brings memories.. my first concert, age 12 at Stony Brook University, the Alarm. Waiting for the band to come on, this song played and has brought me back there ever since!
Yep - this is one of their best songs, my other favorites are ANOTHER NAIL IN MY HEART, Labelled with love, Piccadilly, & Annie get your gun and IS THAT LOVE
I saw them in 1979 at UMIST Manchester. Possibly about 100 people there, mostly students and even though I was moreu into the Buzzcocks at the time , I still liked this lot! 😃
this was superb quality! maid marian on her tiptoed feet with William Tell (not Robin Hood) pulling muscles (lol) and wishing you had a motor boat around the harbour hooking it up to the back of your car at night.. But behind the chalets the holidays complete when you feel like William Tell, Maid Marion as well pulling muscles from a shell. (reminds me of my seaside holidays 40 years ago)
I bought a promotional EP , the only EP I ever seen in the my little record store in small town N.H. USA it was the spring of 1979 and there where 4 groups on it, one group I cannot remember, but there was HUEY LEWIS AND THE NEWS, THE CICEROS ?, And The US labeled at the time U,K. SQUEEZE, and this was their song on that EP almost 35 years, still a good song.
One of the most musical rock bands ever. Glenn’s vocals r extraordinary along w everything else he does. Massively underrated band.
They were always respected! It's a crowded field!
Underrated? By whom?
@@bonkeydollocks1879 Right? They were never underrated.
@@bonkeydollocks1879
In RUclips music video comments, EVERYTHING is "underrated".
Glen Tilbrook has just an absolutely superb voice. Squeeze is definitely one of the best bands ever!
these guys and xtc..........such sophisticated writing
100%
Iconic! The piano breakdown is one of the best of the '80s.
Jools Holland is brilliant.
Still loving this n 2021.

Wish this was still the music on the radio 😢
The Jam, Squeeze, the Clash - Purple patch of British songwriting, and in my opinion underrated. Songs like this are up there with the best of them.
jake hammond lol you think the Clash is underrated
Ja Ha The Clash couldn't carry that tune around in a bucket, much less play it themselves. Saw the Clash 3x and they sucked. SUCKED.
Don't get me wrong, the Clash is an awesome band. One of the best. But I think they get the recognition they deserve.
The Clash did well with what they had to work with. I was disappointed the 3 times that I saw them. Methinks that studio musicians did many of their recordings.
Tell us again how many times you saw the clash!
Difford and Tillbrook, master songsmiths
Yep.
Great song with some unpredictable chord progressions. Very good live performance as well.
Excellent description - summed it all up.
Squeeze are masters at using unique chords progressions. Probably the main signature of their sounds.
Yeah a lot of modulations and melodic key changes
What a great band..serious songwriting and playing
Glenn Tilbrook is such an underrated guitarist..some of the riffs he comes up with are phenomenal
Underrated? , by whom?
@@bonkeydollocks1879 I know!! Lol. Who are these people thinking Squeeze was not huge and completely respected and revered? 😮
@@ariesleorising9421 always a strange thing to say underrated
@@bonkeydollocks1879 Gosh, I love Squeeze. 🥰
@@ariesleorising9421 have you had the pleasure of seeing them live?
Great band, great tracks, but this is the one for me.
Love the energy, title and mental imagery it conjures to me.
🙏🏾🙂👍🏾
Black Coffee in Bed and Tempted don’t hurt either…
I get a shiver every time I hear this and other Squeeze songs. So beautiful it makes me sad that there isn't more beauty in the world.
What a fantastic performance! Definitely the most underrated band from the 80s...should have been 20 times more famous!!
My favorite band then & now!
Simply one of the best bands ever, lyrics and hooks beyond compare
Their music was so darn 'hook-y'. I wore out my copy of 'Singles On 45'.
Squeeze is my favourite band of all time.
Fantastic live performance, never gets old.
Never get fed up off quality writing and singing these squeeze songs could become poetry well done
Saw these guys at Cheltenham Jazz festival last week , they were superb , talk about longevity 🙌
how fucking good is this band ,
talented and original
Well...I think here in America they were taken for granted like Nick Lowe, both of whom are terrific. But, The Clash,Costello,Parker,Jackson, and The Jam who since they came on the scene has even come close to their consistency and power? Nobody period!

Fred H Agreed. When I was a kid Squeeze were considered a "chick" band.

It's definitely a middle age thing. I was exactly the same although I could tell they were good at what they did much like XTC.
Same here, I was 18 when this song hit the charts and they completely passed me by at the time. Since then I've seen them live 5 times and learned to play some of their songs. What a great and beautiful band. THANK YOU for this.
I always liked them but after seeing them live at MSG in NYC this past February. .....I can tell u they are Awesome! !!!!!!!👍👍👍
One a few songs that seems to pull the soul right out of the body- still can't figure out exactly why... perfect nexus of the muses
Squeeze is my new obsession.
Mine too, except for 30 years now...
Just saw these guys last year - well, Difford and Tilbrook at least are still in the band - and they were fantastical. As good as this.
An Amazing Band,
Truly one of the best ☆♡☆

arkady714 OMG! I felt exactly as you describe, even to stopping and shouting my surprise and pleasure at this sound. Rural Alberta, Canada, here.
Glenn has such a great voice
Very
his bandmates said he sounded like he was always smiling
Pretty tasty guitarist too... solo on this is great...
So funny - with due respect I never really thought it was Glenn‘s voice that distinguishes him as much as his lyrics, guitar and HOOKs galore
He's also an amazing guitarist. Truly. I've seen him in action in person several times. Always impressive
The best storytellers of their generation.
My favourite Squeeze song.❤ The 1st time I heard it, I was at the beach with s Harold Robbins paperback. ( Where Love Has Gone)
I worked in a restaurant when I was 15, washing dishes. The Squeeze tape was played over and over. Even now Squeeze reminds me of food. They should have been more popular than they were.
Always takes me back to State Beach windsurfing in the mid-80s on Martha’s Vineyard, back when we Islanders could afford to live where we were born...
Even after all these years, this band and particularly that song just blow me away...
Saw them in the Hammersmith Palais in the early 80's......... awesome :)
Babs Watkins me too and the Rainbow
Saw them at Merriwether Post Pavilion (outside) .. danced 2.5 hours straight.
My kids now go nuts for these guys thanks to the Singles album. 🙌🏼
I love this fkkn song. Loved it for 33 years. Still cant believe it's that old. But f@ckin badass.
Loved Squeeze back in the day, i was 15 when this came out on the album,

British song-writing genius.

I suggest that you go to a record store then. They still exist and you can still thumb through records in real life.

Thanks, I was wondering!
Such a great time for music - one of my fav bands . You could not help but sing their music and blast it on your car stereo and tape deck or your big oversized boombox walking down the street
As usual....an unreal performance by Squeeze... phenomenal band!
I never felt like William Tell, but there's no way to hate this song! How I miss this, now dead, Brilliantism from the 80's.
I LOVE Glenn Tilbrook's voice! He sure was gorgeous back then. He's going to have to be added to my "hot English muffins" list....
Caught them again last night at The Bomb Factory in Dallas. Still amazing live. :)
keep tinkling the ivories Jools
Awesome group..saw them at Top of the Pops back in 1979. Della and I.
Saw them in 79 and again in 81.
Electrifying....brilliant song. You knew it the second you heard it
I love this song! First heard it on the Activision Anthology for PSP.
I love Squeeze. Saw them open for Elvis Costello at the San Francisco Warfield Theater about 100 years ago.

HARD songs to pull off live!!!!! Squeeze do it effortlessly.
they sure knew how to write a song, up there with the best
Fantastic thought out lyrics, love them
This song brings memories.. my first concert, age 12 at Stony Brook University, the Alarm. Waiting for the band to come on, this song played and has brought me back there ever since!
Just saw them last night in Providence, amazing show, really excellent. Tillbrook sounds fantastic. Highly recommend.
Very nice...saw them open for Elvis C. valentines day 1978. Great band !
Fabulous
Another classic from the best decade for pop music. Thanks for posting!
Go Jools!
Talent from England.
You're welcome.
When considering England's size, it has so outperformed all other countries in music, it is just ridiculous. I am American too.
Simply awesome.
Heard today in a Walgreens while shopping.
A good song is a good song no matter where you hear it!
I'm probly the youngest person watching this video, lol. Thanks for showing me this band, Dad! :)
Jools Holland lights things up with his solo at 2:23
