That's an exceptionally high Patreon tier for me, but I appreciate the irony and figure it's worth the experiment. So here you go. Thank you for the inspiration. Let's see if it actually works. I just set it all up, and even quoted you in there :) www.patreon.com/physicsduck/membership
@@Physicsduck I want to support you so badly. I'd gladly pay the $19.20/month but it's an expense I can't do. Heck the $10/month might put me under. But I watch your videos and recommend them to everyone yes EVERYONE. Even people who don't matter. Anyways thanks for everything you do. I had no idea you'd been in prison. Doesn't matter to me other than to say "bad@$$" is so right. This video made me love you more. Keep up the great work and thanks for teaching all the guys in that 💩hole prison system. I hope they too get to see your RUclips acct and see they too can achieve better.
@@Physicsduck I feel very honored :) Your story struck a chord with me because I often feel like I wouldn't be able to be accepted despite my past mistakes & my efforts to change for the better. You are proof that with hard work & dedication, past mistakes can be forgiven & a better life can be attained. Here's hoping enough people can earn you a years (prison) wage each month ;) I feel a bit silly; I don't earn enough to put my money where my mouth is. I myself am in a little bit of debt & the IT field doesn't pay what it used to, but I'm clawing my way out. I've never seen someone with a love of (or addiction to) teaching like yourself. Keep going Chris! I hope one day you're invited to speak at Open Sauce with the likes of Mark Rober & William Osman.
@@bpdqbpdqbeing excluded from society is not fun, but the people who do not accept you are not worth the pain it causes. I found myself drowning in shame recently and I'm not going to let anyone else define me. The work is hard and overwhelming at times, but you are stronger than you realise.
Brilliant move! That's what happens when a technologically gifted individual who is immune to the neurotypical hyve mind start applying his study of human behavior in clear rational actions. Pure genius. @captainboden tip of the hat to ya. Fellow science nerd (of the cosmology flavor) gone rogue.
WOW! THANK YOU! That's a serious step toward getting back in action in a proper workshop! Thank you for helping to build my future :) I appreciate your help!
Holy Bejeebus man. Even when stuck in one of the crappiest situations imaginable, you STILL found a way to help and educate people to the best of your ability. As a fellow lover of neat electrical stuff, and also as someone that likes to share that knowledge with others (sometimes against their will), my hat is off to you.
This is fantastic, very nice of you. For others willing to donate consider donating through the ko-fi link provided in his description as RUclips take a large chunk of the donations compared to the donating websites
HOLY SHIT THANK YOU! :) Just, wow. Thank you for standing up and making such an impressive statement. I appreciate you :) I think you may have just single-handedly solved my teleprompter problem, lol. Well now I have to tidy the shop. You're pretty cool!
Biologist here: given your stint in prison and the era you were in, I'd strongly suggest talking to your doctor about getting a tuberculosis test. TB is rampant in US prisons, and it's shockingly under diagnosed. Also, you do not want to be dealing with a tuberculoma 15 years down the line. Trust me on that.
The fact that you got THAT burned in life. Yet still spend so much energy making videos for people on the spectrum and not. To teach them cool things about science and electronics is a demonstration of a beautiful soul. As someone who struggled my entire life with the public education system due to my autism. People like you are cherished. Thank you for doing what you do. A lot of us genuinely appreciate you.
awwwwwwwwww I'm honoured, thank you :) I'm glad that all this work is so meaningful for you. I hope it helps. :) Thank you for helping me do this! I appreciate YOU! :)
I've been seeing your shorts here for a while now, but never knew the story of the man doing them. I will be thankful to anyone who can teach me, tell a good story, and give me an enjoyable time. You can do all three, props to you sir. I respect you immensely.
"Criminal Gangster with leadership skills and who can help anyone get their GED" is a pretty good title. It does get better. Something we ALL need to remember from time to time.
Dude, you have pretty rapidly become one of my favorite channels. Every time you ask "Wanna see something cool?" my reply is "Damn right, I do!" And you deliver. Every. Time. I'm sorry you had to go through all that and I applaud you for the work you've done, and are doing.
Thank you Drew :) That's really awesome and I'm thrilled you're enjoying my dopey little science videos. Thank you for being here, for helping, and for understanding what I'm working so hard to accomplish. :) I appreciate you :)
Sir, you are a freakin inspiration. I'm a carpenter, and a part time instructor for my local. You have the gift of teaching. You are relatable to so many people in my industry in that you went in, made it through, and still push on. Dont ever stop making videos about cool shit. If you make a sticker that says 'If you gotta eat shit, dont nibble ' it's going on my tool box.

I really wish I could send more. Your videos never fail to make me smile or laugh, and I enjoy seeing you every time you pop in my recommended. Thank you.
Thank YOU for helping out! :) I'm glad you're enjoying the videos, the entire goal is to help you learn something new and have a laugh in the process. It's working! :)
Your relentless refusal to fall prey to the lowest of human emotion and to hold on to your endeavors is an inspiration and the right message at the right time. Your way of thinking and viewing the world is something I aspire to! God speed, Chris!
Thank you! This is a tangible step closer to building a better workshop and making better videos. I appreciate you helping me build my future career! :)
Former BOP officer here, his description of BOP facilities, culture, officers, and unions is 100% correct. This was a good way for me to laugh down memory lane and remember why I left. Great video!
Former inmate, went through Oxford twice in transport (once on my way to Sandstone, MN and once on my way out of it to Safford, AZ). Can confirm, he's making absolutely none of this up.
ONTARIO! :) Thank you neighbor, I appreciate your help in making videos that might just suck a little less eh :) I promise not to spend this on Newfie Screech.
Wow. What a story, this definitely deserves to be a Netflix doco. I’ve never been inspired to give a RUclipsr cash for one video but you are my new hero. Some great quotes in here! Stay strong Chris!
LMFAO, I don't know about being a Netflix documentary, but I'm damn thankful you're here and being a part of building the next chapter. Thank you! I appreciate you!
@@Physicsduck I have seen Netflix true crime documentaries with worse writing, less unexpected twists, and weaker moral messages than this one would be. Everyone should know this story!
To keep it short and sweet, it takes balls to stand up and tell a story about yourself that may not have been your highest point in life. You do a great job with your editing, you put in a great deal of effort to keep things informative and entertaining and most importantly you use just enough 4 letter words. $10 doesnt go very far these days but heres a drop in the bucket as a small token of my appreciation. Keep up the good work G.
Thank you sir! :) It matters, and I appreciate you. This is a small but meaningful step closer to building a proper workshop and making WAY BETTER videos, and I'm damn glad you're here being a part of it. :) Thank you!
He didn't do anything wrong. He was targeted because the feds thought he had money that they could easily seize through asset forfeiture and keep. That's why he was arrested. No other reason.
Great video, I'm sorry you had to go through so much to be able to make it. It's hard to hear how our criminal justice system can be used so viciously against someone. Mistakes made in ignorance can be used to forever impact your future, scary.
I spent 10 minutes trying to figure out which words to choose to show my appreciation for your work, didnt find them. But thank you so much. The world needs more gangster science nerds 🎉
This is the best way, thank you for having the mojo to stand up and actually make a real difference. :) Words are great but words are cheap, you just put skin in the game and that gets respect in a hurry! THANK YOU!
Just watched the whole video. Your shorts popped up in my feed and I was genuinely interested. While not a story as harsh as yours. Covid took me out of the world for 3.5 years of recovery. Since may 2023 I work again as a mechanical engineer doing what I love. Those 3 words? “It gets better” They ring more true than a lot of people know. Thank you for being so open. And thank you for being so awesome. Good luck and I wish you all the best.
Your sticker “every saint has a past, every sinner has a future” hits even harder after watching this. Thank you for sharing your story, I’m happy to be a supporter!
Chris. Your message rang true with me. I am going through a similar situation and hearing how you overcame the challenges before you, makes me realize… It does get better!!! Thank you and keep up the teaching. (A small donation to your wild jazz clubs!)
Thank you so much sir! I appreciate the support. :) I hope you do better with your situation, and if you ever need to vent about it, or have questions from someone who's been down that path before, please feel free to reach out to me on my Discord and send me a private message.
Your candor is so refreshing. As you said, prison coaching is an easy grift. And it speaks volumes that you’re rebuilding your life without taking the easy road.
You're (legally) killing it so far with the RUclips thing. Clearly motivated to keep learning new stuff (except bitcoin) and im on the same boat of pushing themselves to get better. Science Gangster with fantastic character and integrity is a man i can support. Id say you're pretty cool
Wow, I'm so proud of you!! Forreal an inspiration. As a former high school teacher, I appreciate you for the help you've given, even at your lowest low. Can't wait to see your journey, and I'd buy that book in an instant!!
Thank you for telling your story. I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was very young and have struggled to develop proper coping strategies and live a normal life. I’ve had serious depression for many years as a result. I’ve slowly but surely been trying to improve my life and find happiness. Your resilience, hard work and determination are very inspirational. It reminds me of the Finnish word Sisu: “Strength of will; determination; perseverance;”.
Thank you! :) I'm glad you could find inspiration in all this, that is a big part of my reason for sharing it. Bad days make good stories, and if you can learn something from my scars that's a win. Thank you for understanding, and for helping me make one step closer to building a better workshop! :)
This story makes me want to pull my hair out. Sucks you got caught up in this, you seem like a genuinely great person. Please keep teaching, we need people like you.
Thank you! I try to be a decent guy most of the time, but we all screw up on occasion and try to hire an undercover federal agent to break someone's kneecaps. It happens. We've all been there. Thank you for helping me get back to building awesome projects and helping people learn about science. :) I appreciate you!
In my over 10 years of using yt, I never even considered joining the membership of any channel. Even though I've found this channel about three months ago. The nice content put toghether, and his commitment to education, even after all this. I'm now a proud member! It's not a lot, but I hope it helps you in your new journey
Chris, your videos are absolutely riveting, you keep my adhd riddled brain glued. You never fail to entertain. Thank you for telling your story. It really shows how rotten our government and institutions are.
Awwwwwww thank you! I can't blame the government on this one, I screwed up, we all do sometimes. But thank you for helping to make the next chapter a hell of a lot better. :)
The state of Florida made very clear in my plea deal, that I'll never write a book, make videos or do Interviews about my chargs. For a simple fight with my brother... Years later I found out the sheriff that responded lied to the "victims" and coached them to write matching statements. One person was a witness that only saw the last 1/3-1/2.... The sheriff was retiring the week after my arrest and was bragging about it. That was 2009, so no body cam... It took me 1p years to realize lake county Florida does not want me to tell my story because it's a story of corruption and tyranny feeding on the fears of a young teenager. It's a story of corruption and ruining people's lives.
I'm a convict and a physicist. My last judge literally saved my life, and now I make people's lives better. Thank you for sharing this, and I 100% agree with everything you say. I only share my story when I know I can help people, and if people ask, I'm honest. It's important for everyone to know that there's life after, and it can be a good, constructive, and positive life. My key difference, though, is that I knew I was a criminal. I grew up in Chicago in and around organized crime. I know the wrong I've done, and I have dedicated my life to making the world better.
Agree 💯 it shouldn't be allowed for land lords and jobs to hold it against you. It can be hard for those who have a record following them. Gotta work twice as hard, but it's possible. We are more than charges on paper.
The world needs more science nerds like you who are willing to put in the effort to enrich the lives of others. It's the only way balance can be maintained in a society where the education system has long ago failed to deliver in a way necessary for timely advancement of our species.
I'm trying like hell, and with a lot of us working together we just might have a chance at making a tiny little positive difference in the world. Thank you for being a part of it, I appreciate your support! :)
Love your story. Was thinking about doing educational video, but lacking a lot of stuff beyond the knowledge. Background in semis, aerospace, medicine, physics, technical photography. Lots of stories. Format you use is good, but difficult for my stuff as a lot of the tech is intertwined in other knowledge. Maybe one day. My covid was an asd burnout. Good luck.

"Marine Electrician out of Florida" Did 8 years as a prisoner of alcoholism after four deployments to Iraq " only everything wasn't taken from me, I burned it to the ground . You paid more than your debt for being ignorant of 2,641,861 Federal statutes unknown to 99% of the US population. When I was at my lowest and only a few days sober, looking at a drinking addiction I didn't think I could beat. An old man came up to me and said " The measure of a man is not how far he has fallen, the measure of a man is what he does with his life after he has fallen " . Gods speed in your goals , always enjoyed and up voted your RUclips shorts and just subscribed to your channel.
5 as a prisoner of alcohol. It took my pancreas and most of my liver. I wasn't in iraq but USMC 7051 2008-2013. I burned it down and ran them away too. I'm still here tho. "Retreat, hell. We just got here!" 'rahhh
It is my big dream to work within the energy sector. This year I got slapped with a minor theft charge. I am deathly afraid of how it'll weigh down on me and hinder my career from even starting, I've been trying since 2020, yeah, when the pandemic started. It's been really rough, especially since my dad passed in 2021. Thanks for bringing a small ray of hope that one day I'll be able to work with what I love.
Thank you for helping out! It DOES get better. The path of progress isn't a straight line, and there is balance in the universe. But keep pushing, slow, steady, positive change. You're going to have the occasional setback, but eat it and grind. It Gets Better, and I appreciate You :)
In going through a time where I did hit rock bottom, and slowly climbing out, It Gets Better is indeed something I need to remember. Not prison for me, but drastic life changes that currently have me not having spoken to my daughter in a year. Thank you for your story and thank you for the reminder!
It gets better, but ya gotta work at it. Slow, steady, positive change. We'll get there. :) Thank you for understanding, and for helping me get one step closer to building a real workshop. :) I appreciate you!
I spent a lifetime in the military, I'm sure my kids are sick and tired of hearing "Be responsible for your actions" but you sir are the living epitome of that saying. Love your channel and I recommend it to everyone I know!
The way you approached this was fantastic. Humble, not trying to milk the story. You messed up, you acknowledged it, and you grew from it. Simple as. You have my respect.
It feels like entrapment to me. They had to sneak someone in while he was going through a hard time. If you are not making a ton of money through your business, to where selling to that person because you NEED to(not because you WANT to) then you should NOT be allowed to use a sting. The law must change to consider being poor or in debt, as some kind of leverage that turns stings into entrapment.
@DoesNotSniffTurtleFarts To be fair, he volunteered the proposition of collecting the debt. The feds probably would only have charged him with money laundering if he only sold Bitcoin to the 'coke dealer'/ federal agent. Calling a hit on the guy that owed him money was icing on the federal entrapment cake. That is one point I can't really excuse. Trying to employ a street criminal to collect a debt (no matter how admirable the purpose of the money was) can't be blamed on the government. F the system, but he was obviously starting to go down a dark path if he was becoming that comfortable with dealing in the criminal underworld.
I worked for the state public health department during COVID overseeing testing and vaccination efforts for state and federal prisons. I was absolutely disgusted how inmates were being treated and how horrible conditions had become. I filed multiple complaints through the appropriate state channels… nothing but crickets. The inmates who died from COVID almost certainly contracted it from careless CO’s and were ignored by medical staff who were too scared to actually provide appropriate care. Please write a book. Here’s my advance payment for a signed copy. You and your chanel fucking rock, and that’s before I knew you were a science gangster!
THANK YOU! :) I cannot begin to express how passionately I appreciate that there is SOMEONE out there who actually understand the nightmare that COVID was for us on the inside. You're absolutely correct in that we were getting it from COs that brought it in from home. The reported numbers on inmate deaths are a complete fabrication and EVERYONE KNEW IT. They didn't even try to lie about it with us, they just didn't care. Nobody cared but the inmates. The speed at which disease spreads in an inmate population is like something you read in a textbook. It's nightmare fuel, especially in the winter. We were always sick with something, and the medical support is just a joke. It is with no exageration or hyperbole whatsoever when I say that the Quality Of Care at your local Vet is orders of magnitude better than at any given American prison. Thank you so much for understanding, and being one of the very few people who tried to help. :) I appreciate you! and thank you for standing up and kicking in a couple bucks to support a weirdo ex-con :) It shall be put towards building the new workshop, so that I can make PROPER high voltage educational videos someday :)
@@MedicDillahunty the worst part of COVID as an ICU nurse was filing complaints with the DOH for all the wrongful deaths and never even getting a confirmation email. And then seeing them on site complaining about us drinking water at the workstation.
@@jmc042 That is heart breaking. It reminds me of the scene in Brooklyn Nine Nine where Andy Samberg goes to prison and finds out that the paperwork for him dying is just a piece of paper they stick your photo to, no fuss no muss.

Your "Authorised personnel only" series motivated at least one person from the spectrum to work on small-Scale hydropower. A small 29kw unit from the '60s with no automatic control. Programmed a PLC for it, built the control cabinet, installed the actors and pneumatic level sensors. And a Sh*! load of trouble shooting, stuff i forgot or clams laying eggs into the level sensors. It sometimes feels like hydropower is the worst combination of greasy hands, wet feet, wet everything, dirty corners, electrical hazards. It is motivating to see a bunch of dudes working on similar stuff with similar problems. Was so glad to see season 4 starting because these videos had an actual impact on my life in terms of teaching and motivation. Greetings to you Chris and also to Bootsy
I’m still happy that I found your channel again, it’s so refreshing seeing the old RUclips style. Teaching without sponsorships and nonsense. Never stop
Hey Chris, not sure if you'll see this, but I wanted to say thank you. I went by Toastdude in the IRC and forums, and was a young impressionable nerd. TGG had an immeasurable impact on the direction of my life for the better, and that's thanks to you and TGG staff and friends. I eventually got an engineering degree and a physics minor and now work in aerospace building cool airplanes. Thanks for building that awesome school.
whoa! I'm a software engineer who originally studied AE and wanted to work in aerospace, but couldn't afford to finish college and ended up working in tech (started programming at eight and used it to pay for what college I could afford). I made good money for a while until the market collapsed, but my dream was to work in aerospace. I now have my pilot's license but still want to get into aerospace somehow. Made it to the final round at SpaceX last year but didn't get the job. I'd love to pick your brain sometime if you're down. Great to meet a fellow fan!
Way to go, man! That was my dream as a teen and early twenties, but after only 1.5 years of college, things went sideways and it put me on a very different path. Not saying I’m not happy, but my career path could use some correction.

Chris, I’ve been with you since the 2008 Kalamazoo Geek Group days when I was a freshman in high school trying to figure out what STEM subjects meant in my life. Your science rebel approach is something I’ve adopted as my own and has largely shaped my critical thinking skills and given me the courage to challenge the status quo of whatever I’m working on. I work in the aviation industry now, and I’ve changed the way we plan things by asking “why the heck do we do it this way? We could be so much more efficient.” I’ve since given presentations to our COO and fundamentally changed our planning process for the better through the use and communication of data and statistics. I’ve caught millions of dollar mistakes because I knew about chemistry, the ideal gas law, welding, and plumbing all at once. I’ve fixed $120K robots that are meant to move $60M business jets around because I knew the right questions to ask. You, and a highly select group of people like you, inspired me on my critical thinking journey and equipped me with the curiosity and courage to elicit real change in the world, and that means the world to me. Thank you.
I never seen a video that has resonated with me this much. I love learning about STEM and am currently absorbing everything i can about electrical engineering and CS and your videos are fantastic. you are now by far my favorite youtuber as a person. For reference i started watching your shorts like two weeks ago and have been on youtube for at least 4 years. Thank you for your story. And that was pretty cool.

What an incredible story! I am especially touched by your efforts to teach others. The only thing that is going to save the human species is more science, education, and critial thinking. Oh yes, I used to calibrate Simpson 260 meters when I was in college.

If you can accept a disabled 50 year old as an apprentice I’m willing to move. Currently in Indiana but I am not happy here. I think it’s awesome that you taught people in prison. Your message, “it gets better,” may have just changed the trajectory of my life.
Been watching your videos for about a year now. Your enthusiasm for giving and teaching comes through strong, either in a short talking about some weird gadget, or longer serious (but still entertaining) videos like this one. You may have broken the law, but you didn't do anything wrong (IMO). It definitely gets better, if you work as hard as you have done. Keep it up!

Unlicensed money transferring (know your customer rules), structuring, money laundering. Officials seeking to make a name for themselves. Putting a motivated educator out of business, taking his assets and sentencing to prison. Surviving and helping fellow inmates with literacy and attaining GED. Post release, free to be a motivated educator ... and skilled at it! Thank you for this amazing, info packed presentation! Thank you for not giving up!
An unscrupulous DA who sets him up to make it nearly impossible to defend himself...that's terrible. And if I'm not mistaken the fact that he has leadership points on his record means that his finances will be monitored for the rest of his life.
Wdym, he did literally help launder money?? Unlicensed money transferring is a pretty reasonable law (helps stop all sorts of fraud and money laundering). Idrk what part of it you disagree with. I guess you could argue that he didn’t intend to commit structuring?
Wow, this is really worth of support! Chris, I feel you there as a somewhat wild (but never caught) adolescence. I've had my mind on principle more than common sense more than I can count. And yes, it does get better! Great job! GO CHRIS GO! 👏👏👏
Oh, and I meant to add: You're a good man. I can tell a genuine creative mindset, a love for truth in all things, and unbreakable spirit. Most people (myself included) have no idea how it feels to be absolutely leveled, but you've done it, and I know you'll be that much more going forward. Here's to the success that more than well earned!
THANK YOU! :) You really get it, and I appreciate your understanding AND support! This is going to go towards building a proper workshop so that I can make REAL high voltage videos. :) THIS is how it gets better, by working together to build something great!
Growing up in the early 2000s this feels like the same vibe as those teenagers that got caught downloading media. It would be nice if the people who already have more than enough money, would stop pretending that a teenager wanting to listen to "in da club" is impacting their life in a significant way. Thanks for the informative video, gives me and others lots to think about.
I was listening to this story, and you mentioned a science center… and I remember on my route to work each day passing by a science center that was one day raided and the demolished. Turns out they are one and the same! I remember the last thing the sign said after the raid was simply “Bye”. Definitely was disappointed to lose a resource as valuable as it was to the west side of GR. Thanks for sharing your story!
Grand Rapids? Wait I remember that building too!!!! The Bitcoin place! Holy shit. Now I gotta do more digging on all this because his name rings bells too. My head is spinning right now with loose memories scattered all over the place.
All I can say is thank goodness there actually is some "gets better" starting half-way through the most depressing story I think I've ever heard. Our government is so broken.
it might be broken, but it did teach this smart man some very valuable lessons about handling money. in a lot of cases where it fails, it kinda did its job here. even if he was doing it for good purposes, and wasnt hurting people and stealing from them, he was still inadvertently doing all of those things he was convicted of doing. i dont believe hes a bad person, his intentions were very clearly good and honest, but he didnt know that the way that he was doing was dubious. every saint has a past, and every sinner has a future.
@thefourthdymensionmusic They wasted millions of dollars and years of his life for an honest mistake. He may have deserved a lesson of some sort, sure- but this is beyond ridiculous. I still have the drab green floor tile from the front entryway that you guys were selling to fund that particular remodel. Although I never made it for a visit, I felt like you and the team were an encouragement to be my truest nerd-self. Because of that, I got the confidence to become a systems engineer, and started that new career about 2 years ago. Needless to say, you guys changed my life. I worked for said government before this, and I am here to tell you it is nothing but a shit show. Hey Chris, your story is an inspiration. The line where you said "I broke people out of prison with a pencil" speaks to the fact that your educator mindset and desire to help others acheive success shined through such trying times. I've always loved watching your shorts, and I think it takes great ownership and candor to put your side of things out there. Thanks for all you do for us!

If you are not making a ton of money through your business, to where selling to that person because you NEED to(not because you WANT to) then you should NOT be allowed to use a sting. The law must change to consider being poor or in debt, as some kind of leverage that turns stings into entrapment.
@DoesNotSniffTurtleFarts
To be fair, he volunteered the proposition of collecting the debt.
THANK YOU! :) I cannot begin to express how passionately I appreciate that there is SOMEONE out there who actually understand the nightmare that COVID was for us on the inside. They didn't even try to lie about it with us, they just didn't care. Nobody cared but the inmates.
The speed at which disease spreads in an inmate population is like something you read in a textbook. It's nightmare fuel, especially in the winter.

@@_skyyskater yo, this the aerospace corner? I'm currently studying aerospace engineering.
Way to go, man! That was my dream as a teen and early twenties, but after only 1.5 years of college, things went sideways and it put me on a very different path. Not saying I’m not happy, but my career path could use some correction.
Thanks for sharing. Here's a little push to keep it getting better.

Thank you.
And that’s pretty cool
