Fantastic video, shame so few have seen it. The building is such an icon of Australia; it's easy to forget the pain of its birth. Getting anything worthwhile done sure isn't easy...
Which ever way you look and from any angle it's a work of inspired art. The narration came across as pretty negative to me not recognizing the achievement of the time. Sure it's not perfect but it's one hell of an Australian icon. Celebrate!
At the time, Utzon had been forced out, the integrity of the design had been compromised, and it was unclear if it would ever be finished. The pessimism reflected that fact. The end result has been reasonable, but not the unified and perfect building it could have been. I find it heartbreaking to watch.
I had an uncle with a voice like Bob's. You walked into the room and almost automatically asked yourself, "What have I done wrong now?" I rarely venture into the building, but for all the drama, I am grateful for their efforts.
Sad fact is the Opera House features the same day to day trash that any NSW council Library would have in it, sprinkled with infrequent cultural brilliance.
Does anyone know where the companion piece about the destruction and recovery of this documentary can be found? I see the trailer for The Dream of Perfection on Facebook but can’t find the whole thing anywhere.
Was that broadcast before or after "Autopsy.."? I don't think I recorded that unfortunately. It may have been on ABC iView for a short time after it was broadcast but then would have been removed. There is a YT video with that title but it is actually just "Autopsy" ripped off from my channel. (I can tell it's a rip off because my recording missed the beginning of the film. I had to tack on the beginning from the poorer quality iView version. You will see a black line at the bottom of the picture disappear at the transition.)
Thank you to whoever uploaded this video. May you go to heaven and may God bless your family..

Fantastic video Australia wouldn't be Australia without the Sydney opera house glad they build it to symbolise the nation of the country.
Lol "What about a Swan Lake with 32 swans?" Is a 'This one goes up to 11' moment. 43:35
Loved the narration. Writer was on fire.
Growling Bob Ellis.

Amazing to see all those men working without safety harnesses. 😱😱

Would love a follow up on the members of the public that were interviewed in this such as we don’t need culture!
Thanks!! Quite the journey
A fine documentary companion to FitzSimon's Sydney Opera House book. The narration is amazing.
And to this day bureaucratic intervention stains Australian culture. What a disgusting aspect of our history and contemporary life.
Thanks to author Helen Pitt (The House) for alerting us to the existence of this classical historic documentary.
A genius nearly stopped by power-hungry bureaucrats with too much power and no understanding for big systems or construction.
How many billions of dollars has this made for the Australian tourist industry?
At the time of filming - nothing! Now - a rather large amount!
They have a tour in the footage
The harbour, the bridge, the opera house… that’s it… all the good that Sydney has to offer.
You poor little thing.
the bridge is British

Davis Hughes has gone straight to hell.
Maybe, but he got it finished.
