Same with my long time x-gf and I. We owned a house together. We had a joint account and she made sure all the bills and mortgage were paid on time. Never had an issue. I would ask her about it or check the finances myself every, whatever, 6 months or so. Never an issue. What a terrible relationship and marriage to be in if you think you cannot trust your partner and always have to look over your shoulder to make sure she's not scamming you. How sad and pathetic for guys like this.

@@aaronbux1 I think a lot of people confuse the concept of trust with responsibility. You can love and adore your wife. it does not mean you have to trust them with money!
On the contrary if for example you marry a simple Isaan lady (rice farmers daughter?) , is it reasonable to expect her to be financially more competent than you? if for example you are a successful western businessman? Is she capable of running the family budget or the household finances? If not but you are, you should take control of the situation.
In my own life experience I havent yet met a woman who is particularly good with running their own finances, and actualy i would trust them even less with money if they was! And to be frank its not something I would necessarily need in a woman as Im quite capable of running my own financial affairs. In that instance why on Earth would you delegate that responsibility to the less able party?
The main thing about MONEY is that it represents the holder with their own opportunity to execute on their own plans and ideas and indulgences etc. Usually if an onlooker sees your partner as a prostitute becuase you take care of her financially, that is an issue for them, not the relationship hes passing comment on. Clearly there is an issue there in the way that person thinks and sees the world. I havent yet met a prostitue anywhere in the world, but I have met a lot of male "whores" (lol) its just not the way I see women, just perhaps becuase they are poor???? Do you think they would be selling themselves otherwise? Utimately maybe they are just looking for someone to take care of them? All be it in the simplest of hand to mouth ways.

Same here, but then again I keep the lions share of my savings in my US accounts. I give my wife 20K baht/month to take care of herself while I am out of the country (NE Thailand). Our house and car are paid off and I pay the expenses on our condo in Samui. If extra ordinary issues come up I may pay for that as well depending. That Nick guy, what a self righteous butthole. In America at the bar the girl asks you what you work at, she is sizing up your income ... what's that! Also if I had a none working wife in America I would give her a salary as well. Besides what i give is nothing to what a prostituted can make on her own and my wife is too old anyway!

This is exactly how I see it. In our budget we both get a certain amount of money for whatever we want to do with it. In our case it's 10K bhat because that's what makes sense from our budget. The money goes into each of our personal account and you are free to spend it with no input or judgement from the other.

My Thai wife is so stingy that I trust her implicitly with our finances… when we first met 8 or so years ago I would try to buy her name brand clothing, as a present, she would always say no. I had to tell her that there are times you need to say yes, that never happened! After getting to know her better I realised that she worked 12 hour days 7 days a week and money saved was her mission in life, as her family were very poor farmers.
Another bonus is her Buddhist faith. She tells me that she would not be financially dishonest as she would just have a bad next life!
I became an instant diabetic, after having a pancreatectomy in 2018, so eating out is not an option with the sugar in the street food and Thai food generally (that’s not cooked at home)
Calling others a “prostitute” is just unnecessarily nasty in my view, as nasty as calling the farang partner a “pimp”.
If you can afford it give plenty and if not do your best.
TRUST I think is important more so than a $ value.
Love watching your channel and all the so called “boring bits”…

My mother and father, who were together, all my fathers life. He used to work, and my mother stayed home to look after us seven kids. He used to give my mother all his wages, of which my mother used to give him a very small amount for him to spend.
So, from my point of view, is that if one person is the breadwinner, then the other one should look after the rest of the family.
How much you give to your wife depends on the bills that need to be paid and how much that you want them to not need to resort to getting money by other means.
It's not about sex but about being partners in the relationship.
My wife has to look after all the household chores and the farm animals. Hence, I give her what I can afford at the time.
Sometimes it's a lot, and other times, it's very little. Money is just the way to get what you need to enjoy life.

  • @PaulRLight

    Interesting topic.
I give my girlfriend a reasonable amount each month, she supports her Mum and Dad plus 3 children. It's my choice. I'm living a life that I could not live without her. She cooks, cleans and is positive 95% of the time. If I was still single I would probably spend more per month on drinking and going out. So, for me, it's the same level of spending.
To give some context I've been married in the U.K. and the U.S.A.
I'm happier now than I've ever been.
Those 2 previous marriages also came with significant costs.

What has happened to men understanding if you marry and have children together usually the man provides financial security as the wife brings up the children, cooks and clean. That takes as much energy if not more being a 24/7 commitment, it's called a partnership.

    • @davidpattison5860

      Hi @mariadange
Obviously a child of the 60s , me also and I totally agree with your statement, but unfortunately the female children from the mid 80s onwards have created an insufferable aura around themselves that men hate , they are confusing being a strong independent woman who don’t need a man , to an aggressive argumentative angry selfish female,
Myself I live in Thailand with my partner of almost 12 years, she works full time , I pay all the household bills and buy 99% of all food , and I’m fed up asking her if she needs anything and told no I’m fine, she can have what she wants but asks for nothing , I don’t give her money ( pay ) , she has a salary that I never ask about , don’t know how much it is and don’t care what she does with it ,
Have a great day wherever you are and regards from Thailand 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

Interesting vlog! I agree with most of the suggestions and opinions. I believe that when two people become a couple and understand each other well, they should support each other within the scope of their family-meaning wife, husband, son, or daughter. Beyond that, it's up to communication between both partners, but it is not your responsibility to take care of others. Thanks for sharing!

What you have with Mo is IMO a "real" healthy relationship. Both supporting each other as much as needed and more. Don't worry about negative comments. I can almost guarantee that those people talking about paying rather than sharing or splitting roles are the mongers who are looking to do just that. These people tend to not be able to develop a sharing, cooperative, loving relationship so they buy it.

Been with my wife for 16 years. I do not want my wife to work and we have a young child at home. We each give ourselves 10,000 bt a month as well to spend on whatever we each want. Listening to these low value guys talk about salaries to wives is more about them and the fact they spent too much time in the world of prostitutes instead of finding a decent woman to have a mature relationship with. That kind of vocabulary has no place in a marriage to any woman anywhere. She’s family. She’s not your employee.

I agree with how you approached this topic. Terminologies tend to make the subject murky. I look at my wife as my family and we generally discuss our finances together. When she was without a job we budgeted my income, when I was without a job we budgeted her income; when we both work we budget both incomes. It may just boil down to what you believe a marriage is. All of our income goes towards our shared family goals…

    Something not mentioned.
If you’re not assisting her financially she will be working 10 hours a day 6 days a week. Time spent together will be limited. Up to you! as they say.

I personally enjoy the content you create. My fiance is from Isaan. I have known her for 2 years. We own land in Isaan, I have met her family, and I can assure you that the level of sincerity of the Isaan people is like nothing I have witnessed in the West. Yes, I send 11,000 baht p/fortnight ($500 AUD). For her personal expenses, and what she doesn't spend she saves for our house. This is simply life. I am the man, and it is my job to ensure my wife's needs as she does for me. Thanks Ryan. Love the content.

But I have a question, my gf supports her parents as they are farmers and she loves her parents. My question is they pay money for “ insurance” I’m guessing this is a common issue in Thai culture. It seems to be a scam on the part of the insurance companies, can you comment?

Interesting discussion. My Thai gf and I have been together for 15 years now. I always paid for all of the bills, as in my culture that's what the Man is supposed to do. I have no complaints. She uses the monthly allowance to pay all the bills and she saves a certain amount in her own bank account. She actually sends me all the receipts even though I have never asked for this. I bought her a car and a motorbike and we live in rural Thailand. My gf is a teacher and makes a very small salary. I wouldn't even dream of expecting her to spend her salary on the household bills. We have a house together which I paid for. Every year she negotiates an increase in the household budget and that seems quite normal to me.

    Hi again Ryan
My Thai wife of 11 years works for the Thai Civil service (over 20 years) She pays our home loan herself.
She also pays for her own health insurance and all the small everyday items such as milk bread and food for our 8 year old son and also her dad.
I don't pay any allowance to my wife.
    However
I pay for all the monthly expenses such as Electricity,Internet, Netflix, extra school lessons for our son on Saturdays,Diesel for our ute ,car rego insurance and car servicing etc.
Plus trips to restaurants, our twice yearly holidays, and any home maintenance and home improvements such as a new shed and all home appliances etc.
Overall I think we have a fairly equal arrangement.
    🙏

My wife in the uk has no income but she helps me with my business when necessary, she keeps house, cleans, cooks, laundry and much more. If I had to pay her for everything she does for free I'd have little money left...so don't forget the value of a mother and housewife. She is invaluable. We have a joint account and she is free to use it because i know she won't buy anything we cant afford....Like your channel and how you live....😊

I’m a 79 year old married woman who has worked out side the home for 18 years and in the home for all my marriage of 59 years. My husband has worked for 35 years and now is retired, we have always had “one” bank account !! We pay our bills and all our spending comes out of that account. and we always put part into a savings account for emergencies . We are equal partners in everything we do. I don’t have to ask for money ever! We both use the account for both our needs and that of our family of 3 children when the were little and lived at home!! We trust each other !! End of story!

G'day Ryan, my thai wife and I have been together for 30 years and have 2 kids, now adults. We have a thai restaurant and joint account. She works 2 days a week and l scrubb down the kitchen once a fortnight as well as manage the business from a distance. We share everything from money to a cigarette to an alcoholic beverage, we even sometimes eat off the same dish. Everyone is different in their relationships, some are sharing and caring and some are selfish and self concerning. Different strokes for different folks

So keep up the good work and just try to ignore these negative comments you get from I guess 100% men.

I am 72 years old, and among my parents' generation, it was very normal for the woman in a relationship to stay at home and take care of all domestic things, including the children (typically 3-4-5), while the man had work outside the home, and thus was the one who paid for everything - and thus indirectly paid the wife.
I have now been married to a (younger) Thai woman for 10 years (met her here in Copenhagen - she has lived for over 20 years in Denmark) and we share the expenses - neither of us consider it as if I am 'buying' her.

Always a hot topic of conversation this one 😂
Personally, I would say it’s all down to the circumstances of each Individual and what type of relationship it is as in girlfriend, marriage or family.
It’s impossible to say! But let’s be honest I think most will know if they are being taken for a complete mug or not! Whether they want to admit that to themselves or not is another question.

Ryan, your critics' expectations are the source of their disappointment. Your content is always stimulating and valuable. That's my opinion.
I live here. Never had a full time gf/companion in Thailand, but I know many men who do, and happily provide financial support if needed. Some do, some don't.
Not too terribly concerned with the opinions of the twisted knicker folks. In fact, not at all.

I have never thought that I pay any salary to my wife (Thai). Since we met about 20 years ago, we have shared finances, we have different accounts, hers more for saving and mine for spending. Now we will start spending parts of the year in Thailand and then it will be changed, she will set up an account in Thailand and will have all the money, get to pay all the bills and if I want to do something I can ask her for cash (salary) 🙂
    Best regards
    Mathias

I have been married to a Japanese woman for 23 years. I lived in S.E. Asia for 7 years. Relationships alll have their ebbs and flows over the long term. You have to work together. If one person works and the other does not, that is fine. There are other tasks which help the family and the nonworking person can attend to those. "Money is an energy". Yes. I also think money is trap too.

Yes, have a Thai wife and we are both working in Thailand as professionals in our fields, I'm an expat and have worked in SE Asia for many years. We share the expenses, my wife has a child with her previous husband and I look after him also. It's a normal relationship and we rarely talk about money, except when we invest together involving business or future prospects. If your a westerner, ofcourse you would support your wife especially if you have children and she is unable to work for a period of time. I don't understand what all the nonsense is about when you compare this to a Thai wife. I guess some people are just jealous!

To be honest people seem to have forgotten the term "house keeping" (and I believe this is a UK term) going back just 50 yrs it was NORMAL for the wife to look after the home and for the husband to provide a monthly allowance for these costs, i.e. house keeping. The husband is not PAYING his wife in this instance and no one would dispute this. As you say Ryan its about terminology or labels if you prefer. Where the lines do become blurred, for me, is where the fallang hands over a sum of money each month and the wife squanders this and distributes this to family members and runs short of funds for household costs expecting him to make up the shortfall. It would seem your relationship is not like this and is just traditional one (but to be honest your wife seems very intelligent and responsible which helps) I guess the correct way to phrase the question would be "How much house keeping would your Thai partner require to run your home to your standards?"
Keep up the gr8 videos mate, Cheers from Chon Buri.
