The leaked wide Steam controller would probably be pretty nice, I personally find wide controllers (such as the Wii U Gamepad) to be quite comfortable due to not having bend my arms inwards as much to hold the controller (don’t take that out of context).
The index controllers are flimsy and expensive. These look like an improvement in the number of inputs and durability. Knuckles may have been more innovative, but a lot of people aren't going to spend 250 on hardware that breaks down in a few years, no matter how innovative they are.
If they offer both side by side, offering the Roy controllers as a more affordable option while the Index controllers maintain their price but allow for that excellent type of control, I wouldn't mind this at all. Replacing the current Index controllers would be another thing altogether.
@@Lord_of_Dread No idea what you're talking about, the knuckles are the best controllers I've used so they have a price tag to match. I've also been using the same pair without any problems since 2019.

Valve's system IS inside-out tracking, the sensors and processing that does the tracking is built into the headset and the controllers, but with specific reference points in the form of the Lighthouses, instead of generic video tracking.
@MadMaxGyver Yes, but it's also just plain wrong, both inside-out and outside-in are umbrella terms that can cover a range of tracking methods. There's granularity there that should be acknowledged, and/or different terms used, something like "fully onboard tracking" or a more sexy sounding term. I don't mind that much when random people do it, but I expect a higher standard from news outlets and people specialized in the field. Similarly I have issues with news outlets and "authorities" using terms like "two times more" when they really mean "twice as many", or gun educators calling the AR-15 system "direct impingement" when it's an internal piston, DI is a different system.
I would disagree, outside-in tracking is the method of using data from or getting specific data from an outside source while inside-out tracking uses non specific data that it's capturing. I really liked the finger doohicky thingys that Valve did with the Index controllers... I hope this is another controller option and not the original ones being discontinued.
If they release anything even close to what those rendered controllers show, there's going to be a lot of upset VR enthusiasts. Those are clearly not finger tracked. Also, inside-out tracking is far inferior to lighthouse tracking. Valve is obviously prioritizing stand-alone with this headset rather than the "why not both" that people were speculating. Hey Valve! The people who are buying YOUR headsets don't want stand-alone! They want something they can connect to the gaming PCs that they already have! This is going to be a huge step back for the actual VR enthusiasts if you continue down this path.
I disagree. Wireless VR is very important. Being able to turn and swing freely is liberating. And having it connect directly to PC without Oculus software as a middleman boosts performance and in general makes it more enjoyable
@@the-thane I should rephrase. It's fine if they were coming up with a fast and reliable wireless connection to your PC. But that's not their focus. They are focusing on making it a stand-alone headset like the Quest line of headsets. They will essentially be sticking a Steam Deck inside of a headset, which admittedly would be much more powerful that a Quest. But still not nearly as much performance as if it were connected to a PC, wired or wireless. No doubt even though they will be making it stand alone for sure, they will have the option to connect it to a PC for PCVR, but they are catering a lot of the hardware for the stand-alone side of things. The inside-out tracking is one of those things. Inside-out makes sense for a stand-alone since it adds to the portability, but it is just objectively inferior to base station tracking.
Google's Page Annotation sounds an awful lot like an old adware thing that would put double underlined links on pages that when hovered would pop up ads in a tooltip-like fashion, and the link would lead to some crappy ecommerce website. Yeah, we wanna do that again!
Perfect timing honestly. My VR game releases today - self funded, ive gone crazy - but the result is high. Focusing on standalone was a huge force for me, removing the sdk for index finger tracking and using the open XR for standalone seems to have been a good move. Was super stressed about it. Its called Pixel Arcade, it features world first tech. VR Portals, no loading screens, no laser pointers and exclusively 3D UI.
It's wild to me how fluidly Linus switches between reading from the script and interacting off-screen. So seamless. I guess over a decade of making videos really helps with the skill hahaha
I quite like my Legion Go, but damn do I wish it had a Surface Pro style keyboard cover like on that Tencent one. I hope if Valve does do inside out tracking on their next headset it can still take advantage of any base stations you already have.
I'm really hoping valve doesn't go with inside-out tracking for the Deckard. I've been using the quest 2 for like a year and a half and honestly the tracking is basically useless if your hands aren't directly in front of your face, and when they aren't it bugs tf out meaning swinging in games like blade and sorcery is always handicapped because it LITERALLY CANNOT detect your entire swing, and often just shows your arm locked into place in some random spot when it can no longer detect the controller.
i think elon was more talking about how most studios are under a few big companies... similar to the car world all of the car brand you have heard of fall under like 3 companies

Nice change of pace to see linux the man himself deliver the tech news and quickbits! This is like the only Linus channels I watch, so it's nice to see the man who created it all be here 😊
It's best to wait and see the final product, but I will admit I would be a bit let down if Valve's only new headset entry for a while is just a better Quest 3. Don't get me wrong, I am sure it would be a great Quest competitor, but not having a new enthusiast-level headset after the wait would be a disappointment.
I can see a new law coming out soon similar to the one where Search engines/Social media has to pay media News company compensation for using their Articles but for the general internet.
I'm not buying another VR headset until we get index-like finger tracking again. Valve and Meta can stick it if they think I'm gonna buy a headset without it. Bonus points if it has camera tracking so it can do foviated rendering and focus pulling without breaking the bank.
Huh.....If Deckard *only* uses Inside-Out tracking, I'll be a bit let down...I may be in a bit of a minority here, but I already have lighthouses for the Index. Is it reasonable to use both or have the option for either? Or is there any CLEAR benefit to I-O over lighthouses? I don't mind the option of not being tethered...so long as it is an OPTION. I'm also a huge, HUGE fan of the knuckle straps on the current controllers! Being able to actually grab something while "grabbing" something in game is a really nice experience. I sincerely hope Valve in evolving the Index with Deckard and not just copying Meta for a quick buck... Keep knuckle straps Have tethering available Lighthouses as a optional use Pancake Lenses Higher rez displays Keep insanely high quality (or better) speakers and built in mic Is that asking too much? 😅

Congrats on 1000 episodes!!! Here's to 2000! 🥂
(we need a sit down episode like the one you did for the 1M)
The "dudes running" suffered from the common AI problem of overdosing on mushrooms and acid at the same time. .
Can we keep the tracking stations, add a hoist to the ceiling for the cable and put lanyards and straps back on?
you don't switch
YOU DECK
I don't care, I just want a real wireless competitor to quest so I don't have to give Facebook money
They are prioritizing being able to play your entire steam library in VR
BASE STATION TRACKING is the best wtf u mean you get perfect tracking as long as u have 2
Congrats Riley 🎉 🥳 There will be a cake at the end
Happy 1,000th episode see you at 10,000 next! (Well not next but in 9,000 episodes)
That will take 22 years
Even if they upload daily 😂
@MyMobileGames lol they better get going!
Google's Page Annotation sounds an awful lot like an old adware thing that would put double underlined links on pages that when hovered would pop up ads in a tooltip-like fashion, and the link would lead to some crappy ecommerce website. Yeah, we wanna do that again!
7:06 How about NO
Happy birthday LTT ❤
Dress Linus as a Persian princess for 1001th episode.
Wow! 1000 episodes! Love what you do, keep going!!
elon has too much money and not enough self awareness
Well the other billionaires are a lot worse so technically...
they hate elon so much it's cringe. like at least give us proper info on xAI's plans..... techlinked is useless
@@dolpoof2335 i loathe stupidity more
@@dolpoof2335 No, they're not. Musk is one of the worst.
XAI is not a big player in the market. The EU has confirmed that as such.
Congratulation on 1000 episodes! Also love durian, the company is going to go far.
We ALLL know how hackers could ruin that innocent lollipop experience. This is the wrong timeline for this kind of tech
Losing finger tracking would be a massive step backwards. I like the ringless inside out tracking, though.

Congrats on 1000!
i think elon was more talking about how most studios are under a few big companies... similar to the car world all of the car brand you have heard of fall under like 3 companies
I really hope Linus was invited to host this episode and didn't hijack it because it was episode 1000. Riley deserves to host this historic episode. Congrats on 1000!
3:21 "Advanced hallucinator" sounds like something Michael Kirkbride would write for Morrowind lol
Nice change of pace to see linux the man himself deliver the tech news and quickbits! This is like the only Linus channels I watch, so it's nice to see the man who created it all be here 😊
Wow! Congrats on your 1000th episode!
Grats on 1000 guys!
eyyy congrats to the team on 1000 episodes!
here's to many more quick bits!
P.S. you know it's a big moment when Linus hosts
Congratulations on the 1000 episode 🎉
7:05 Looks like Hyperdrive's "Mouth Player" is becoming a reality. I never expected an underappreciated BBC Space Sit-Com to predict the future!
Congrats on hitting 1,000 episodes LTT Team 🎉
The search links thing is also on RUclips comments, random things are turned into links.
I'm not buying another VR headset until we get index-like finger tracking again. Valve and Meta can stick it if they think I'm gonna buy a headset without it. Bonus points if it has camera tracking so it can do foviated rendering and focus pulling without breaking the bank.
Finger tracking is overrated if games don’t apply it.
weren't the knuckles the best part
also an option for inside out with extra anchors if you want would be nice
Keep knuckle straps
Have tethering available
Lighthouses as a optional use
Pancake Lenses
Higher rez displays
Keep insanely high quality (or better) speakers and built in mic
Is that asking too much? 😅
After I have noticed it, I just can't unsee when Linus is advancing the teleprompter with the clicker on his belt
Note that Knuckles don't have straps in their 3d models in steam VR either. So it doesn't mean they are not gonna be there.
Congrats on 1000th episode
Wish you many, many more thousands .
I remember I used to get viruses on windows XP that would change text on webpages to be clickable buyable links. It was awful and every time I got one I'd do everything in my power to remove it.
Thanks Google for bringing back the viruses of old, I love nostalgia!
Dang. You guys missed the prime segue to the sponsor around the second topic. 😁 I was waiting for it, and it just passed by. Lol.
That electric lolipop just stinks to high heavens...
'One dystopian please.'
3:44 anyone else see that guy running on the far right? He slows up, and suddenly his whole body is reversed coming toward the perspective of the viewer. His arms are the giveaway
The ai stuff could be great for have stuff like games with full character customization actually refering to your character by player chosen name in voiced dialogue, Dynamic character conversations, and shit.
