THANKS MAT!!! I recently tuned my car (SQ5) and i have been wondering why I must spend the extra money on the higher octane fuel and now I have a very CLEAR reason why I SHOULD ALWAYS do it!!
Hey Mat, every modern Engine have Knocking Sensors. If you put bad fuel like 95 Octane in the Tank, the Car automatically change the Ingition for the Conditions. The Tuner has to recalibrate the Maps for that. But if you turn Off the Knocking System or Component Protection the Car will do everytime the same Performance also with bad Fuel. Otherwise your Engine Pistons or other Components can be broken like in your Video. Greetings from Germany ✌🏻
I also posted something similar. It wasn't just the fuel, as the knock sensor would have protected the engine from pre--ignition. Something probably happened during the remap that bypassed that safety. 100% user error.

I had a mk4 rs turbo years ago dine by interpro. It appreared in the max power or fast ford magazines, it was one of the first cars with water detunation tank fitted to it to stop detunation and the cylinders from getting too hot at higher speeds maybe a thing to consider to fit in the future.
So, so very sorry to see this issue, and that you are all having to deal with it on the other side of the world. It's unfortunate that this is going to be so expensive to fix, but I feel like these are the painful lessons about modification / tuning that are worth learning as you go. Hope you can get this beast back on the road for minimal outlay!
An expensive fix that I feel like the tuner should have warn them about or built into the tune. Maybe the tuner told them, not sure I would trust them.

I seriously enjoy watching your videos Mat. What is so fantastic to see is the following you have. After the last video I read through the comments and saw a fair few people suggesting that the 91 fuel could be the reason for the engine blow-up. What a stunning crowd!! I hope the rebuild isn't too painful, we're all on your side.
Honestly your channel is amazing, all the work you put in to make awesome content is insane, I think all we now need is “engine very bad” merch as that would be really cool
Mat, kudos to you and your dad for such wonderful videos. it was painful to see the damage but there's where the fun begins...Hard Work beats everything!
Hi Matt, I love your channel and have followed your videos from the Porsche rebuild in the States. Your down to earth and explaining everything as you go superb. All the best, and I really believe of all the rebuild channels yours has to be up there with the best.
Great vid Matt. Sorry for the poor RS6 engine (been an owner of rs5 and rs6 myself ) The fault is absolutely on tuning and not on the benzine though. Should have gone for dual map on the ECU. I am on the opinion that supercars don’t need any tuning anyway :) .Love your work and vids. Waiting for the part 2 gonna be interesting
Its very kind on the remap shop. I am sure the stock map would have been able to detect the knocking and gone into limp mode before this happened. Regardless of the fuel it was mapped on, it does seem that some of the other safeguards of the stock map may have been removed.
@@pete.w27306 it’s the tuning or may be the not very professional tuning let’s say. The one mapping the car should have gone for dual maps. In case not then he should have said to Matt that it’s ONLY 99+ octane fuel and not use any other. So I discard your ignorant comment as you didn’t bother to read what i said. YES ITS THE FUEL FOR THIS result OF COURSE..but SHOULD HAVE BEEN A PROFESSIONAL tuning there would be a dual map or safe (limp mode) in case of knock sensing. If you get a 110v US appliance and plug it to an EU plug of 220v would you blame the power distributor? In case it had a switch you should have switch it yourself in case it didn’t you should have been informed that the boom will happen
This is definitely THE BEST RUclips Channel about rebuilding cars, so much fun 😂😂 Even promoting CarVertical at the point I wanna buy it beside I don't need it.

I know the video is 10days old but I work on old vw engines and to check if a intercooler works fine we use two bits rubber hose plugged up with a 17mm bolt and a jubilee clip done up tight and use a pressure tester on the other usually give you a good indication
@MatArmstrongbmx, my dad's car had the same problem. The problem has to be the pistols and the fuel injectors. Also get the engine block cyllinders refined.

Never thought you could get a hole in your engine block if you use lower octane fuel after remap. This channel turns into a car documentary. Keep up the good work!
Normally you shouldn't, unless the tuner disabled the knock sensor and other engine protection systems to make it easier to map. It could very well still be down to a poor re-map
This is the only channel I have the noti bell on. Upper michigan viewer, I really wish to meet you and the crew some day Mat. Would truly be a pleasure
Pretty surprised the ECU safeties didn’t prevent this. With detonation that bad, it must have had detectable knock long before this failure, I’d have expected a CEL and a limp mode to prevent damage. Surely the knock sensors were de-sensitized.
Agreed. Cali 91 is the worst 91 in the US. Wouldn't even consider it 95 RON. But the car should've pulled timing in an attempt to compensate for the fuel and sent it into limp mode with super knock codes. Combination of bad fuel + tune.
Genuinely the cleverest, slickest integration of a paid promotion I’ve seen on a vid of this type. Hate RS6s but I love how mad this build is so wishing you the best with it. 👍
Matt, fuel quality has always been a problem. In late 60s we had different jets and needles for different countries or altitudes. That’s when we only had 250bhp and no complicated ecu. Sometimes even different fuel filters. And, by the way, Dads brain is not visible, he left it in the tool box back in the UK. He went to USA for a holiday.
US 91 octane corresponds to UK’s 95 Octane. The ECU should have decent knock control. It would also only really matter under boost. Did you hood it in California with that fuel? Did the tune preserve the knock control?
How you guys can smile amazes me. I'd be in tears. Your channel is awesome Mat. Only RUclips videos I can't wait to watch IN FULL, no skipping. Thank you

Matt you have built my dream car and when it went down I almost cried. I truly hope the next video will be the rebuild and rebirth of the RS6 in my eyes the pinnacle of the automotive experience.
Mat one trick you can do is if you have lap timer enabled on your dashboard it will display your oil temp reading on the heads up display. Might be useful if you wanting to keep an eye on your engine temperature. I always drive with it on my 7
You are truly amezing! because you take all problem with a smile😁 I would be pissed and run away from that car, crazy how you and your dad just toke that engine out🦾
I have a 2017 Audi S7, same motor and it is a PITA to work on.... the most cramped engine bay ive ever seen. To change plugs is a 4 hr nightmare! And to watch you guys rip that motor out and tear into it was impressive lol...Love watching you and your dad !
That one piston is crazy bad. If you can, get the injectors tested as this may tell more of the story. If the lower octane fuel was the cause wouldn't it be more evident on more than one cylinder? If the injector was partially blocked and not giving the correct amount of fuel then it could cause a lean condition that would put the extra heat in to the cylinder causing the issue. Definitely worth checking either way especially if your planning to reuse them in the build.
Holy moly, and there was me thinking it was bad when I had water coming out of the Jenvey throttle bodies of my Pug 205 Hillclimb motor. Mat Armstrong, if it was a damage competition - you win !
Find and used block and build it up better. Forged pistons, rods, bigger injectors etc. Maybe need a tune that you can switch to a lower octane(ron) when you need it

Matts explanations are very simple & straight forward 👌👌💯💯
Lol its nothing to do with the tuning. Its the fuel. Absolutely dumb comment.
Your dad's laugh when he knows its all gone sidewise is amazing!
Love the bond you and your dad have, I loved seeing the clip at the end of the lambo spotting flames and you and your dad losing it at the same time lmao. Keep up the amazing videos and keep on making your dads life exciting 🤘🏼🤙🏼
I know the video is 10days old but I work on old vw engines and to check if a intercooler works fine we use two bits rubber hose plugged up with a 17mm bolt and a jubilee clip done up tight and use a pressure tester on the other usually give you a good indication
I've been on the edge of my seat waiting for the next upload. You've got me hooked mate. You're killing it .
Always a good way to end my day with a video from Mat .love from South Africa ❤
@MatArmstrongbmx, my dad's car had the same problem. The problem has to be the pistols and the fuel injectors. Also get the engine block cyllinders refined.
Problem.*
Anybody else would be freaking out, Matt just laughs and takes it his stride! Legend.
Absolutely extraordinary guys on this channel which make it soo successful and why all other YT car channels are falling over themselves to be associated with MA.☺☺
But he's dying inside😂
@@Cpm_legit54 Nah he just sees it as more content for his channel. Mats positive attitude is exactly why this channel is one of the fastest growing on YT and everyone wants a piece of him.
@@wcads623 🙏
Well done Freddie for this help and use of his garage 🇬🇧 👊 🇺🇸
How can you not love mat and his dag? Worlds best guys! 😍😍😍
Every vid has a moment of Tony gold 😂 "you can see my brain"
Mat is living the dream and gets to do it with his dad at his side ❤
Yep priceless life experience for both.😁😁 Wish I could do the same with my son.
❤ Restoration Time 😂
Where have you been? love watching your stuff 👍
Good to see you're alive 😀
Who needs sky subscription, Netflix, amazon prime , eastenders when you have such a delightful chap like this guy !! The only one Chanel I never fast forward ⏩.. so engaging from start to finish . Awesome content my guy !!
I love no matter what happens matt n his dad just laugh....they live care free n i love it....just seeing his dad laugh makes me smile ❤
Would also lough if I made more than enough money to just fix it 🤣
Freddy's shop works like a magnet on cars with water damage😁
BTW if the engine is completely busted just do an LS swap for shits and giggles 😁
Man come on look at that RS engine its already a race engine. The LS is fricking truck engine🤣🤣
@@wcads623 I bet you an LS eninges is lighter, more compact and a LOT more reliable. And if god forbids, something like this happens, cheaper to fix as well.
@@horvathr95 yep but to get the same power out of an LS would cost a hell of a lot more than the Audi motor.
Hey Mat I'm Jonathan from southern Africa and I love the content you post and no lie you've motivated me a lot to follow my passion with cars....and that passion is exactly what you do...much love and blessings and I pray one day to work with you.
Petition to get "engine very bad" merch
This is the only channel I have the noti bell on. Upper michigan viewer, I really wish to meet you and the crew some day Mat. Would truly be a pleasure
Mat, we all know you and your dad will face this one down. Great to watch you both with Freddy's kind help. Enjoy the journey 🙂
Great video Matt! You HAVE to make a series of "Engine Very Bad" t-shirts - I'll order one immediately!
What a team matt! You lot can fix anything with hard work! Dam 91 fuel was a costly mistake really enjoyed the diagrams and how it works. Cheers
Thank you
You have THE BEST links to the video sponsor! 😂 Always being creative and finding an interesting way link it in. Most are just super boring with getting the sponsor in.
Tavarish is a top man for lending you a space in the shop, mad props
Matt you have built my dream car and when it went down I almost cried.
I truly hope the next video will be the rebuild and rebirth of the RS6 in my eyes the pinnacle of the automotive experience.
Sleeving the block and it’s golden. That’s the problem with modern coated blocks. It can torch the cylinder as its just coated aluminum.
Love how you all can smile and laugh over things like this I know I would be crying
Some go to school to be a mechanic; this lad does it with intuition and experience. I think of working on my own car when I am watching his videos.
Mat one trick you can do is if you have lap timer enabled on your dashboard it will display your oil temp reading on the heads up display. Might be useful if you wanting to keep an eye on your engine temperature. I always drive with it on my 7
A bmx professional educating us in cars. Love the videos!
It's amazing to see that no matter what you always have a smile on your face and see the positives. Love that
You are truly amezing! because you take all problem with a smile😁 I would be pissed and run away from that car, crazy how you and your dad just toke that engine out🦾
Hope we can see a Tavarish and Mat car build. Freddy is such a good bloke for letting you use his workshop.
