I struggled with alcoholism for many years (I'm in my early thirties) and decided to go sober. Got myself two cats and took several months cutting out anything that I didn't feel was necessary. Greatly simplified my life and it's pretty boring while all of my buddies doing all kinds of crazy things like getting hammered at the bars/clubs, but I couldn't be happier.

As an aspiring minimalist, this quote resonates with me.
I also like the similar quote, "Being satisfied with what you have got, is more important than getting more of what you want."
For 30 years I have built up a library of music, literally thousands of cds and vinyl, chasing up and acquiring new sounds. Then I realised that there are some records that I haven't listened to for decades. I decided to spend more time systematically going through my collection, listening to everything, at least once. I'm finding joyous treasures I always had, but barely knew.
It is interesting though, that I still wrestle with the desire to buy new music.

I wish my family would understand this. They're always trying to "save" me from my life. They think I'm bored, lonely, sad, etc... But really the only problem is with people trying to change how I live. I'm perfectly content living a simple life.

@@somegamer4071 Oh,I got plenty of "grow up" speeches from my parents and brother and relatives but it seemed they drank a lot and WERE NOT happy. I guess "misery loves company" would have applied. I have never drank or took drugs or anything. I just liked being an overgrown 10 year old. Reading Famous MOnsters,reading comics,going to the drive-in,collecting toys,watching all nighters of horror films,etc. I grew up in the 70 and 80s which was the perfect freedom times. I've met everyone from Jerry Seinfeld to Stephen King to Devo to Michael Caine to Tim Burton. I did a lot of living on what I made delivering pizzas and stocking shelves at grocery stores. I still wish it was like the 70s,watching everything from the Pippi movies to Candleshoe to Meatballs to Laserblast. Magical times. Drive-ins ruled the roost and late night TV was amazing. Less commercials and more movie.

I had such ambition 20 years ago. I wanted to film documentaries and inspire and make a positive impact on society. Now, I know that the general public is fucking hopeless so I am just going to relax, garden, be a positive or neutral contributor to society, and donate monthly to charity to justify my unproductive existence.

Boring is good. Stability and consistency are underrated.
Bank and pharma owners don't want you to lead a boring life. They want you to be ambitious, eat, buy stuffs, get sick, buy medicine and die without causing much trouble to the current global "hedonistic" order.

You are wise beyond your years. I’m also happy leading a “boring” life. Now that I’m retired, people ask me what I do all day. I always reply, “Whatever I want to do.” Usually I just read, cook, enjoy my pugs & family, go for walk-all simple things. Although I’m sorry about the whole pandemic & its atrocious effects on the world, I have had no trouble adjusting to being at home. It’s a gift to be content with oneself. Best wishes to you!

Vivian, I am in the same situation in life. Retirement is good but I get tired of answering the same questions. Actually, having retired just 5 years ago, I had planned to return to Tokyo just before the pandemic to do some photography and then spend some time in Thailand and Vietnam... So, I feel trapped in an alternate lifestyle for now.

I like taking care of my plants and spending time with them, I like youtube, I like meaningful conversations with anyone, my meditation times, music, long morning walks, cooking, I like books too and research papers.

I’m so happy to watch this. I’m “boring”. I enjoy the things around me, rather than rushing around trying to find the next big thing. I don’t care who doesn’t like it. I’m content with myself enough to travel alone, go to concerts alone, and invite friends if I want to. It’s only when I try to accommodate someone else’s wishes to be exciting, is when I feel anxiety.

I feel the same way. I love being at home, hanging out with my dogs doing what I want. I feel much more stressed out when others pressure me to "join the party" when I'd rather not.
Exactly, i feel like it's only when there are other ppl involved, who are not on the same page and try to project and demand, that being yourself is a problem. Only when I compare or feel pressured and "threatened" caused by external factors, my choices and character make me feel bad and become an issue. My person and life itself are not problematic or bad or less worthy or what not.

Thats exactly how I feel too. Life is not boring if you find joy from the small things and moments. Everything else feels so consuming. Sure it’s important to work on something you love.

That is what I was thinking also.
In my 20s I spent all my time on road trips, skateboarding, exciting hobbies, social media, friends, wanting to be noticed. By 28 I was uneducated, unemployed, $25k in debt, and frustrated.
In my 30s I've stayed home and studied, found a high-paying consistent job, paid off all my debt, moved into a nice house, and save 50% of my income. At 33, life is simple and I'm happiest I've ever been.
That's great. I'm 19 and not interested in the conventional, vain things that society and others pressure me to pursue, and just want to live a simple life instead. I've always been a loner so am less susceptible to societal influence. I guess it's a blessing because it led me to figure out what truly makes me happy.
I needed to hear this comment. I’m 27, about to turn 28 and for the last 5 years I’ve been chasing the aforementioned life you described. I mean everything, skateboarding,music festivals, traveling, friends, hobbies.. but I can’t lie and say I’m starting to feel the slow life more appealing
@@mxbvibes good stuff, do what feels right. i just turned 36 now, income almost doubled since my last comment. Bought a house, paid off car, almost done with my degree. Life is still very simple but I started skateboarding again and its much more fun now. I can afford new boards and skate shoes often, trips to new places to skate... and I'm a better skater than I ever was because my mind is clear and stress level very low. what I'm realizing now is that there are many many years ahead of us to do anything we want, and its much more fun when life is stable. there's no age limit if you eat right, every week I'm learning tricks I never would have dreamed of in my 20s

This pandemic where everyday I heard death news of people around me, really make me to badly enjoy the current moments because we don't know what might happen to us in the next second.
I've been working a lot on this with my therapist over the past six months. The fact that many people around my age are having similar realizations all around the world gives me hope that maybe, sometime soon we will all be more relaxed and happier than we pretend to be right now.
Our corporate overlords and their pet politicians will do their best to NOT let that happen.

@@ChineduOpara very true, but there's one problem - young people, while all of this can be easily understood by 30+, the target of that are young people / children. How to save them ? They're very destructive in their life view.

I agree with every word, it's such a joy to have these words expressed so perfectly. I love my boring life too - I'm so grateful to eat well, enjoy good books, RUclips, painting and my small family. I love my home and don't want any adventures :)

You are fortunate to have come to this realization at a relatively young age. I spent decades wondering why I was 'different', and doing things others thought were fabulous fun was mentally exhausting. A quiet day at home with my family is heaven to me. I have drastically cut the time I spend on social media (even youtube!) and am working toward building a life of MY dreams.

I always thought there was something wrong with me too, because i never seemed to like the same things as others. Now im nearly 70 and ive finally realized that being different is not bad at all.

Thank you so much for making this video. I am 19 years old and currently a senior in university( i started at 15) and everyone around me including my family berates me for living a simple life. I don't smoke, drink, haven't been to any party even though that's what most people think college students should be doing. My hobbies are reading and doing crafts like embroidery. I like how my life is and I genuinely have so much fun doing my hobbies but people think I am lying to cover up loneliness. I aspire to live a happy life, I don't want to live a life I'll regret when I'm older due to being pressured by society. Life is short so I want to have no little regrets when I die. why live your own life trying to please other people who aren't content with themselves and will never be content with you.
Do what you want in life, it is your life. Living a simple life and being content is great,
Just make sure you plan your finances so you would be able to sustain your simple lifestyle for life and tell people to leave you alone as you are already set for life financially.
When people have experienced life, they will realize that everything in the world is meaningless when they die without taking it with them.

The past few years, I have done a flip flop with my life, friends and self respect. I love a simple, "boring" life. Never felt better to do this. Before I always felt like a ragdoll, having to appease everyone. Thanks for this video.

Great video. People find it weird when I tell them I'm not on IG, facebook, etc. I never found interest in connecting that way. I am totally fine living a humble and happy life off grid.
I still do facebook and ig. But unfollowing and unfriended plenty of random people and kept those i am interested knowing only.

I wish I had this wisdom when I was in my 20s. As I got older, I find greater joy in having a non-drama, simple life and spend more time at home rather than going out. Im also lucky that my spouse also embraces this kind of lifestyle (even though we live in the Bay Area California).
Cheers to anyone that chooses to live an ordinary life with meaning, purpose and servitude to self and others. Boring is not a "bore" when it is intentional. Achieving for better by means of acquiring material wealth is a social construct. While living with only the basics is challenging it offers a wide array of lessons that is life-changing.
Some people might be able to relate to this, but I also feel like hanging out with a lot of "friends" and going out/ to parties all the time is just a waste of time. Nothing substantive good comes out of that process other than "ok I just spent time with a lot of people." Hence, as an introvert, I also really enjoy being away from people and living a "boring, ordinary" no drama life.

Absolutely! Hanging out with people is a hugely overrated experience, often miserable for introverts. The small talk is draining and even alienating... I'd rather have no discussions with anybody than such shallow discussions as those you have with large groups of people.
I did all the partying in my 20s and early 30s then I stopped doing it because I almost became an alcoholic and I was spending too much money. Now, I prefer to stay home and host a house party once in a blue moon. I own my house outright in California(paid it off in 15 yrs), I have 2 paid-off cars. I retired a 38 and debt-free. I have 3 solid monthly income streams until I die. Life is good. No alarm clocks, no deadlines, No planner, just a calendar to keep track of my medical/dental appts and other events to stay a bit active. There are so many things to do in life OUTSIDE of the rat race to nowhere. Ahhhh, peace/quiet is the best! LOL.

I feel this, man!
As a 28 year old I still don't know what I'm doing. I still find myself comparing my life to others. I feel like I need to go out to the bars to have a "fun life" even tho I don't enjoy going there. But now as I slowly realize that it's okay to be alone and not forcing myself to go things that I don't like. Sometimes it's okay to stay home and game with the online boys. I enjoy the simplest things such as hiking with my dog, biking to explore the city, hooping, and most of all I can train and watch my racing pigeons fly all day.
I feel like this too sometimes. I'm 28 and still live at home. Didn't live on campus all throughout college, never been to a nightclub, never traveled extensively (I don't have the money to get on a plane and go to Europe. And even if I did I don't know who I would go with lol). Many times people have told me I need to get out more or some variation of that. At the end of the day other people's opinions don't matter. You have to do what makes you happy. Don't go to a bar if you feel like that environment is not your thing. Many people are too judgemental nowadays, and more often than not they have their own issues to resolve, so that's even more reason to disregard them.
@@dreamcollector6811 for sure, lol I just moved back with my mom too after living with my friends for 2 years. It was fun hosting hangouts but having to clean up the mess weekend after weekend gets old quick. I find myself wanting more peace and quite the older I get. Would I live with my boys again, probably not but do I regret moving with them, no. It was a good experience. Lol when I was in my teens I thought I knew everything about life and fast forward, what am I doing. Lol life is funny.
This is what i like in Japanese culture... Simplicity, and self discernment finding inner self and knowing oneself being true and being joyfull.
Sena is a rare soul among the Japanese people. Japanese culture is actually very cutthroat and citizens are expected to get a good job, graduate from uni, study hard and get a good partner etc. Doing things outside of these accepted societal normalities are scrutinized and looked down upon by others.
The simple, minimalistic and quiet life is underrated. The older I get the more I realise this.
Excellent video. I wouldn't call it "boring life", I would call it a reflective life, you are a sane person who knows why you do things. It's a great truth, we don't have to follow the pattern imposed by companies and traditional social structures, it's not easy for people to understand it, the person should matter more.

As long as I have my Folgers Breakfast blend coffee, I’m happy! I don’t need much of anything else to be happy. I used to be the one who had to be in the middle of everything-always feeling I was missing out in life. Those years were the most miserable for me. Once I decided to be content in my life with the simple things, I found so much peace. I’m in my late 40s, and those restless years were my late teens into my 20s..but as I got older, my ideas of happiness changed. It changed to peace, simple and love those who love u back.

EXACTLY!. My wife and I do not listen to naysayers or opinions, it is just all noise. We also do not pay attention to unsolicited advice, we ask people when we do not know in order to learn. We do not like drama. It is our life to live. Finding the right partner in life is also key to happiness. My wife is a SAVER like me, she is a homebody like me and we enjoy watching NETFLIX,/RUclips, cook, and occasionally eat out and shop. We love our house and maintain it, same with our cars. House is paid off and we are debt-free in California. Life is good. We have everything we need, and can buy anything we want in cash. WE love peace and quiet so we can enjoy life and focus on things that are important in life. It is liberating to know that we have 3 monthly income streams for life, 4th one is SS when the time comes, in 10 years. .
@@paengguin9381 Well... I dont know anything about incomes, payed off houses, all the cash i can carry... We dont own anything. I think life is beautiful if you happy without all those things... I seen many couples who broke in half just because someone/something popped the bubble one day... Me and my wife been forged in fire. We been tested by life more than anybody i know... Still going strong.
@@thebee2685 Well, good for you guys. I have that too with my wife but having at least a paid off house and some cash is a bonus for a stress-free life. Shelter is one of our basic necessities. If you can survive without owning anything and using money then good for you.
A married couple living down the street from me live what I would consider a "boring" (less boring than mine, but still boring nonetheless) life with their two daughters. In the more than two decades I've known them, I have never heard/seen them fight with each other or anyone else, never heard them gossip, never seen/heard anything out of the norm from either of them. As a person who is attracted to mentally unstable partners, I have to say that after monitoring this married couple for so long, the more I want to find someone who's boring like myself to avoid drama and other stressors.

I knew I was different from a very early age. I was content with staying home (alone most of the time) watching TV (not what most people my age watched), RUclips, listening to music (not what people my age was listening to), and playing my favorite childhood game (RuneScape) while most the kids my age was worried about going to the mall, skating rink, experimenting, going to parties.. I never wanted to. My family would called me a hermit crab and thought something was wrong with me. Over a decade+ later I'm still the same. I chose different paths and routes along the way. I took my time and done it my way. I get called boring but I don't see it as a bad thing because it's what I like to do so it's not boring to me. I'm just me and I'm just content living a more "boring" life.
I like that you believe in what you like and what is good for you as an individual. Many people are influenced by what others think. We want others to like us so we do what they do. Myself included. Now i learn that is not the way to live our true individual life.
Having a good night sleep, and being able to see the sun next day is good enough for me.

Beautiful. I live by the same credo. I'm a father, husband, teacher and son and that's all. I love playing with my daughters, helping my wife in any way possible, and caring for my ailing in-laws and mom. It's a full life. I need nothing else.

The biggest problem in this life is, finding a partner who has the same mindset....
if you just show yourself as you naturally are, in all your quirks and faults and qualities, without making any effort to impress, you will find that your true soul partner will find you; or more that you will find each other, as your future partner will also be naturally him/herself without trying too hard. But have a good idea what kind of person you would like as a partner, try to write those qualities down so you can visually see them on paper, then put that paper away.
I agree. I have seen many good people joining the "keeping up with the Joneses" as soon as they had a spouse. It's like the whole thing was invented to corrupt minds and hearts.

Yes! Absolutely. When I was younger, I lived a very stressful life. Finally, when I was around 40 years old I had enough. I knew that life must be simple and not this crazy bombardment of 'shoulds,' 'have-tos.' and 'suppossed-tos' that greater society tries to put on our shoulders. It's insane. Since then, I've slowly been simplifying my life as much as possible, especially with my own mind and the way I think of people, things, and life. If my mind is clear and open, with the least amount of biases or strong opinions then I can let a lot of what stresses people out just flow through me and out of me. I'm not so extreme that I don't have an opinion on anything. I don't like mushrooms or water chestnuts, and I love strong coffee and writing. And I prefer letting my life flow as it will rather than pushing so hard to make things happen that I end up stressed out and feeling miserable.
Over the past few years, I've found out how to let this natural flow of being help me get rid of some bad habits. I used to abuse alcohol, but now I don't have much of a taste for it. I will drink occasionally with family, but won't want very much. I didn't make myself stop drinking. I just naturally stopped because I had other things I wanted to do, like reading, studying new subjects and learning new things. I'm very close to quitting smoking cigarettes, too. I used to smoke a pack (20 cigarettes) per day, but now I smoke around 4 to 8 cigarettes per day. Again, I didn't make myself do it. I stopped paying attention to how much I was smoking and stopped stressing myself out about quitting. "It isn't a big deal," I tell myself, "because I don't like smoking, so the cravings and habit will go away, just like my taste for alcohol went away." I don't worry. I focus on doing the things I enjoy and want to do so I can help other people.
I've found that the only thing that really takes our happiness away is trying to live up to other people's expectations of us. We only need to live up to our own expectations of ourselves. That's what life is. It's very simple. Our natural desires and dislikes will keep us on our right path, as long as we are able to ignore other people and their blind judgments of us.

I feel this. I love being at home, and there's really no other place that is better, although I like being in nature a lot too. I'd rather stay at home and play instruments or learn about many different subjects that fascinate me, than go to a party or something of that nature. Yes I agree. As an introvert I'm very happy being home and enjoying my simple hobbies and totally at peace. If there's too much chaos I get too stressed and need to come home to recharge and unwind. 😊
Me too. No drama, no stress. I love my home, it is where the heart is. I own my house outright in California(paid it off in 15 yrs), I have 2 paid-off cars. I retired a 38 and debt-free. I have 3 solid monthly income streams until I die. Life is good. No alarm clocks, no deadlines, No planner, just a calendar to keep track of my medical/dental appts and other events to stay a bit active. There are so many things to do in life OUTSIDE of the rat race to nowhere. LOL.
Well I wish I had had your wisdom years ago! I am 66 years old ...recently retired...and I am just beginning to learn to love my boring life and find value in taking care of my animals, doing my gardening, and even cleaning up the trash in my neighborhood everyday. I stopped trying to compare myself to what I was seeing on social media... like there was something wrong with me. I have learned slowly to find contentment and joy in all of the simple things in my life and around me. I'm not bored but very content. I'm very satisfied with living by myself and doing my own thing. I retired last year and was busy my whole life, working, 2 failed marriages, working and doing art in my shop and now I've realized that I just love doing nothing! I love watching movies, youtube and messing around on my android phone. If I want to talk to someone, they are a phone call away. But mostly I like to be by myself! It took me about 8 months after I retired that if I did'nt want to do anything, it was okay. I kept trying to put schedules on myself! I slowly began to realize that if I did'nt want to do anything, I did'nt have to feel guilty about it. A lifetime of working and playing hard was difficult to overcome and just be satisfied with doing nothing without any guilt! All my debts and house and vehicles are paid off and I truly live a very blessed and happy life! I wish it for all of you! THANK YOU JESUS!!!
I love this video. This is how I have been living my life and it makes me so calm. I don't want to try to be an executive or run my own business. I just want to make enough money to look after myself and my family and enjoy the rest of my time. Even if the way I enjoy my time isn't productive or new.

I had this kind of realization at age 27.
I used to have a dual life.
A wholesome life whenever i'm with my friends and family, and a wild one in my alone time.
Seeking out my truth, i did some pretty wild things until i realized that it's quite alright to just sit still all day and do nothing if that's what it take to have peace of mind.
The joy I get simply viewing my garden, watching the birds and the bugs and the other little critters run about enjoying what I helped create, is greater than pleasure that has been thrown in my face trying to get me to chase it.
Being a gardener is new to me, a result of covid. It slowed me down, and now I cherish the "boring" life. A life where I remain in the now, enjoying creation like a song or a dance, not a journey to get through. It is peace.

My dad was always on the go, took risks and we had so many ups and downs cause he was chasing money non stop.
Had to move more than 15 times due to this and there was no stability, which made me go insane too many times.
When I became my own man, being at home with a nice meal, a cup of tea and no one knocking at my door to collect money (during my younger days with my dad) was a luxury not many people understood.
This resonates so much because when you've had life come deal you so many random cards, stability is a luxury, a boring life is not bad, it is actually sought for and is a prize.

Even as quite an ambitious guy, I've fallen in love with the very unglamorous and uneventful process, aswell as embracing JOMO - the Joy of Missing Out. Life is just too abundant to expect to experience and achieve it all, even for the most resourceful among us. There's a certain freedom in the ability to accept that. To surrender your attention fully on what is, as if nothing else existed. At the end of the day, we won't regret not having driven a Lamborghini, been on the cover of People magazine, and played Pink Floyd on the guitar while on top of Mount Everest. But I would certainly feel a sinking feeling if I realized that life was these days that came and went, and I was never really there.

Yup everyone has their own goals. You should live life on your terms, do whatever makes you happy. Not living it for others. Nothing wrong with a simple life.
Animals live a "boring life" and they are the happiest creatures there is. That's because of their perception of time. To them, time turns in a circle, and so repetitive "boring" things is what makes them happy. To us humans, on the other hand, time runs ahead in a straight line, where repetition is deemed as dull and boring. We are constantly looking for something, for a novelty, to move forward, we are never satisfied. That's why we can never be happy. Because true happiness is the longing for repetition. Milan Kundera explores this very well in one of his books, and I completely agree.
Hence the design of social media as a "distraction" it plays to the pre frontal cortex and dopamin hits.. scary really.

I can definitely appreciate the point he's making. My father told me when he was young there are so many things you want to do but could never accomplish them for so many reasons period part of it was a cop-out part of it was due to societal issues as he proclaims in his video. Too many people I know have died with regrets I don't want to die with many regrets I want stories to tell. There's nothing wrong with simplicity but I don't rub things in people's faces either least I hope I don't. If I have things I share them with family and friends as long as they're happy with life have no problems and have their health I wish them well

Great video. You've obviously found a way to be in touch with yourself and what makes you personally happy and content at an early age. I believe it's really what we all want but most people take a lifetime to get to this point while others never seem to learn these valuable lessons. What we call boring is actually living with self awareness and living in the moment, not being influenced by the world around us and yes, the corporate world and the media is hugely responsible. Cultural expectations also play a role and all of these can be difficult to overcome. Bravo to you and keep making videos. They can be a great help to others who feel as if their life is lacking because they're not living up to the standards of others. In the words of Iyanla Vanzant, "You are enough". Words to live by! we have same mindset here, I always feel blessed everyday even though I'm not born in a wealthy family or having much material things but growing up I know my parents work hard in order to give me a good education. They're farmers and I'm proud of it cuz they teach me how to appreciate evey little things I have in my life. Never feel like I need to live an extraordinary life just wanna be a good person having a content life and be a mom someday. Thinking about it gives me so much joy and motivation. God bless you.

in my 20's I feel the obligation of going out and have fun, get wasted etc, sometimes I did not feel like it and still go out, that worked for me at that time. We are all different, and that is ok, just don't do things that you think you have to do.

The pandemic made me realize there are boring things I really enjoy. Watching the birds on the balcony, getting food. Cooking. Going for a walk around the neighbourhood with my family. Growing food on the balcony.
Great insight Sena! Living "in the moment" is the ZEN WAY! Living that "compare yourself to others" doesn't bring happiness. Besides, happiness is a fleeting emotion that cannot be sustained! In my humble experience "Contentedness" is a more sustained feeling and is achieved through simple living and a focus on 3 things that are highly intertwined: your health, relationships with your self and others, and nature. I just subbed and am looking forward to more of your videos!
I'm glad I'm not the only one having this mindset. I had a hard time explaining this to my mom. She thought quite the opposite because she is extrovert and I'm so introvert. This so-called boring life is all I ever wanted.
