Very well done; your captured sounds were also a pleasure to listen to and I actually just picked up my new Zoom F6 today thanks to your review!

    As a working professional audio engineer, I think these type of videos are gold and extremely helpful!
    Audio is kind of a forgotten art form.. People worry a lot about video but don't get to see how audio is 50% of the project.. that's until everything sounds bad and they realize that they need audio to be as solid as video, in order for the project to be good!!
    Thanks for making this guys! You are definitely reaching a lot of new people who might have not even thought of audio like this, changing perspectives and teaching about our craft!
    Excellent work!!!! Keep it up

      Hi Dan! Thank you so much for saying that and I can only agree with you. Each time I’m out there recording sounds, I meet people who didn’t even thought about recording sounds or the audio engineer profession. We know that we aren’t reaching a huge audience but the people who find us or the people we meet along the way, are going to appreciate audio work. That’s what I can tell you. :)

    I modified my Peak Design strap with three small modifications.
    1. The plastic buttons for the quick disconnect system would catch on the strap because of the gaps between the webbing where it loops thru the mating connector. I wrapped a small piece of velcro around the webbing to keep the gap closed and this seems to work much better.
    2. The plastic buttons were difficult to slide with dry hands. I installed a small rubber button foot on to each plastic button.
    3. I removed the metal slide rings, as they had sharp edges that could scratch the Zoom F6 recorder.

    Your audio’s always so clean and clear. What’s your post-processing workflow? I’ve been using one of the Zoom recorders with mic capsules, and as careful as I am recording, I always find I have to do a ton of work to isolate the sounds I’m interested in. You and Libby have a really great channel for recording enthusiasts...keep it up, it’s awesome!

      Six MikeMike Hi Mike! I don’t have much post processing work to be honest all what I do is using a ftt filter to fit rid of the mic rumble in Adobe Audition and that’s normally it. I never record to high and make sure I don’t have any self noise in my ear coming from the mic. Do you want me to make a more in-depth video about that?

      Six MikeMike Before going with Rode you should look into the Audio Technica stereo microphones. I think it’s the 4025 I had my eyes on but then I bought the SAAM. Problem is wind so in windy situations I am pretty much doomed. So check out this mic with a Blimp and you have a nice setup.

    What you do is amazing, bring so many creative ideas to my mind and what could be possible. The only downside is that I am just a one-man person. Being able to produce something like a cinematic trailer with those sound effects and compilation as well as transition of footages to bring it to real life visually and auditory, it is AMAZING.
    I also agree with your opinion F6 does bring more motivation to work with. As a super novice, H6 or H8 would definitely suit my needs for podcast. But for outdoor and sound field, definitely F6, for sure.
    Thank you for bringing all these content and going out your way to capture it. I do like how the content microphone brings a whole new perspective from the parabolic microphone. I wish I could bring them all when travelling from place to place in my luggage.

      Thank you so much for your kind words and so glad you found our video. The F6 is a great recorder but if you have any other kind of recorder, that shouldn't stop you. I started with an H1 and moved my way slowly up to the F6. I don't have the parabolic microphone anymore because one channel start failing. Also it doesn't had good wind protection.

      I did not use all channels at ones but sometimes I record with the Sennheiser MKH 8040 (Channel 01/02), the Geofon and the AKG C411pp at the same time. That makes it four channels. But I could use another pair of omnis. Maybe when I buy a microphone that requires four inputs, I probably would do it.

    I am in the prosess of trying out my Zoom F6 with my Sennheiser MKH 416/Ambient ATE 308 (Emesser) MS-stereo rig. The two microphones fits nicely in my Røde Blimp MK2, by the way.
    But I have a question about the track link settings. The user manual is not any god at this point. To me, it sounds like the F6 is using a kind of built in MS Matrix to make a on the fly stereo mix for the headphones, when the two mono tracks is linked together as a MS-stereo set in the menu. I want to have the raw, separated recordings from the two mics unaltered when I import them in to Pro Tools, to have the control that I want. I am not pleased with the recording when linking it as a normal Stereo microphone either. Its not sounding right to me. Two separate mono tracks, not linked sounds best. But then I have to set the recording level separately for the two channels. (And all the decoding is done in the DAW.)
    What are your experience at linking a MS-stereo set of microphones with the F6 Marcel? What is the best way to do it?

    • @larserikertzgaardringen7426
      @larserikertzgaardringen7426 3 года назад +1

      @@FreeToUseSoundsThank`s. Ian`s video is perfect for those who want to know the basics of MS-stereo. But it does not answer my question. I have worked with MS-recordings since 2004, but this is the first time that I have to configure the recording equipment on my own. The first time I made a radio documentary using a MS-microphone, a sound technician even did all the post processing and editing for me. This is my first private setup, and I would love to get a processed mix to monitor the recording in my headphones, at the same time as I get a recording of the original unprocessed mono mid/side channels.
      I will try to post the question to the Facebook group.

    Can you use the 192/32 to eliminate clipping, but easily put that file into something like Izotope to edit and export as a 44/16 wav file? Or can the F6 automatically do that for you? I would be a little concerned that it's the audio equivalent of 4k video - neither my computer or any software I have can actually play it!!!

    • @FreeToUseSounds
      @FreeToUseSounds  4 года назад

      Hi! Yes that is what the F6 can do for you. Eliminate clipping but only if the sounds you will record doesn’t extend the maximal input pressure of the microphones. For editing I use Audition and have no problems editing and exporting the files. I never used Izotope so I can’t give you an opinion on that sorry :(. As you are the masters of sound recordings I have one question: (I’m a complete newbie)
    For short films shooting which one should I go with: Tascam 70D or Zoom f6?
    I’m getting a used Tascam 70D for 225$ and Zoom F6 for 500$
    Price wise I can buy both but I want to know which is better investment for small scale short films. I’ll be using it with a DSLM. Specifically Lumix S1.
    Thanks :)

  • @mariusfinnstun

    Could the sound be clipped before going into the F6? With a wireless lav system for example. You can set gain at both transmitter and receiver. If the mic is too hot and the signal clips going into the transmitter, wouldn't the receiver send clipped audio to the F6 and wouldn't it be clipped at any level the F6 records it at? There is a way of having the clipped audio being "burnt in" to the signal chain?

    • @FreeToUseSounds

      Hi Marius! That is a very good question and I honestly haven't thought about it. I personally haven't used any wireless system yet but let me forward your question to a friend who knows the answer and I get back to you.

    • @FreeToUseSounds
      @FreeToUseSounds  3 года назад +1

      Hi Marius! Yes, if the signal is already distorted before it reached the F6, then this can't be fixed by the recorder. Its the same with cabled microphone. If the sound exceeds the SPL of a microphone, this sound is going to be distorted.

    • @mariusfinnstun
      @mariusfinnstun 3 года назад

      @@FreeToUseSounds yes, that makes sense. So the idea would rather be too record too soft and being able to raise the gain without introducing too much noise then?

      Hello Mustafa,
      I'm not entirely sure what specific issue you're encountering. Could you clarify what you mean by "how did you make it work?" Generally, any headphones should work fine. If you're using external microphones, remember to enable phantom power, as this is often a common oversight.
      If the problem you're experiencing is different, could you please provide more details? Understanding the exact nature of the issue will help me offer more targeted advice or solutions.

      Thank you for your answer. First of all, I would like to state that I am an amateur. In the technical specifications of zoom f6, the impedance value is stated as 15 ohms.
      Zoom f6 specs: Output impedance 15 Ω or less
      If I'm not mistaken, you are using Sony MDR 7506. The impedance value of this headset is stated as 63 Ohms.
      I was wondering how you can power and get sound from the 63 ohm mdr7506 when the headphone output of Zoom f6 is 15 ohm.
      Or am I misunderstanding something and doing something wrong in the calculations?
