Compared to Dohnanyi’s interpretation with the same orchestra decades apart, FWM’s is perfunctory and unenthusiastic, as anticipated.

Agreed. He also rushed through the coda too rapidly for my liking.

Well said, while apart from the rushed, almost at times, elongated passages (aside from the overall tempo), that Welser-Most observes here, his conducting is highly pretentious, with it being a total world away from the kind of integrity that Szell gave to B1 with this band!
I actually had to stop watching this toward the end of the second movement further it being 'interpretatively vacuous', and this despite some excellent playing by the various sections - particularly by those in the winds. Suffice to say that one understands how great this music is and what it became when it was conducted by Karajan, Jochum, Klemperer et.al., while that is assuredly not the case here.

@@EagleEye-vm9gf apparently you don’t know what a poor performance of B1 is.

Chase County, Nebraska is county 68 in Nebraska's old license plate list. I used to have 72-B678. I have no idea how I made the county. It was there before I got there, but the plate was used to assign me a hubris that I never really tried to evince while I was there. The county seat in Imperial, Nebraska was where I picked the plates up. They had a change-over and redesign every two years then. I don't know what they do now. The Nebraska Unicameral Legislature met once every two years (ostensibly) to set a biennial budget and handle things in between. The whole state at that time had a population less than Los Angeles City, some 6 million more at that time at the end of the 20th century. Now, I live in San Francisco, a city alone in one county, in a state full of other cities that have to share their counties. There is a way of respecting the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe here while totally running roughshod over the needs of the rest of the deplorable breadbasket of the United States, raising the wall against the hands that feed them, offending them into deep holes they can't desire to climb out of. I'd recommend they never easily desire to come here to take a vacation if they ever seek political sympathies. They surely won't get any. It's see the sights, but leave. They want your money, but they detest your ideas and your very lives! Red State Republicans are only allowed to strengthen our tourist industry, but they aren't allowed to influence things here, even if they are meaning well.
