Which mic would you buy? Shure SM7B vs. Electro-Voice RE20?

    So they have almost opposite response curves where it matters. Each dips where the other bumps. The SM7B has a bump 4-6kHz & a dip 6-8. The RE20 dips 3-5 & bumps 6-12. While I prefer the RE20, the distinctive sibilance bump always sounds a little unconnected to the rest of the sound to me. While I hate to admit it, long periods of talk might be better suited to the SM7B because sibilance sizzle can get fatiguing; whereas for short bursts (between songs, live ad reads etc in broadcast) the RE20 will stand out and grab attention. Also its slight bump in the bottom end helps give it that big broadcast sound.

      Thanks for your insights - I've just been looking at it very surface level thinking "I like the sound better of RE20" but not really considered fatigue etc. I'm not very well clued up on the more technical elements of it all, I just know I so far prefer RE20 when I have them side-by-side. Still more testing to come to be sure on which I would prefer long-term, but for now, I can at least switch between the two... Do you have either of these mics?

    I switch between both microphones periodically. They both sound great and each has their own perks/trade-offs. For your voice, the RE20 sounds a bit smoother and surprisingly seems to pick up less room noise. Mic 2 at the end of the video had my vote and it just so happened to be the RE20! Great video comparison!

      I’m strongly leaning towards the RE20 myself - but realistically very little “need” for either mic. I just want one! Do you have much experience with the RE27 or have any views on how it compares to RE20?

      @leo_hoang The RE27 N/D is a brighter sounding microphone compared to the RE20. For a good video comparison on Electrovoice's microphones, I added Podcastage's review below. ruclips.net/video/lcgQ2uePinA/видео.htmlsi=Cs64zbaIN2wucf-Y

      @@NodofApprovalThank you - I've seen this comparison and I can't tell if my bias is wanting RE27 because I know it's more expensive so in theory, the 'better one' - but I'm even seeing some people in comments section preferring RE320 which is the cheapest! Decisions, decisions... really and truly I need to calm my self down and just stick to my Shure - aside from the occasional voice over for some social media content, I don't really need the mic... but struggling with Gear Acquisition Syndrome

    In every comparo I've seen between these two mics the RE20 always sounds better. Yet youtubers rarely go with what they hear and pick the Shure. I'm guessing it's the fear of looking like a fool by going against the grain.

      It’s been on my to-do list for months to follow up with my conclusion on the Shure SM7B and I admittedly go back and forth on my views… but people definitely do go for SM7B automatically for its “look” over the sound which is what mics should be about… but it’s that social media status of a Shure SM7B

  • @Stampede_G
    @Stampede_G Месяц назад +1

    The biggest reason why the SM7B is a more sensible choice is that you can easily purchase a new windscreen for that, and clean the capsule with a can of air/straw attachment.
    When the RE20 foam inevitably rots over time, you have to take the thing apart and painstakingly service the entire mic just to refoam it.
    Additionally, doing some research EV’s customer support is less than ideal, and replacement parts are nowhere near as readily available or accessible. You can go on B and H photo and purchase an entirely new SM7B capsule if you ever need to.
    If you’re just comparing sound, yes, the RE20 sounds slightly brighter, richer and more full than the SM7B, but it comes with too many downsides in my opinion.
    (Side note: you also have to spend an extra 100+ USD to get the EV shock mount, and even more if you want the BSW RePop pop filter, whereas the Shure is internally shock mounted and doesn’t need an additional pop filter if you’re using it correctly.)

      I 100% agree with you on all points and a detailed comparison video is due early 2025… I wanted to have a good length of experience between both mics before I made my comparison video and you have raised very valid points regarding the foam and customer support…

    I could be wrong but the pre-sets on your consumer mixer are probably more intended to be simulations of the EQ curves of those mics when using something generic, and not optimal settings to use with the actual mics. You should have just used the same flat EQ setting on both mics to get an accurate comparison of their inherent differences. My personal view is that the RE20 is good for cutting voiceovers and annoying radio commercials that blow the listeners head off... the SM7b is more of a recording studio tool for vocals to sound musical, but it has better off axis rejection than the RE20 and less sibiliance, so its a good choice for podcasts when you have more than one person in the room or just want a more refined less boomy sound.

    • @leo_hoang

      I still have the mic’s and do plan on doing a more technical comparison.
      The Rodecaster presets are EQ presets baked in through the Rodecaster.
      Typically when I do my mic comparisons I do no processing, then do some preset comparisons so people can get a feel.
      What I’ve found is that after EQ, you can get most mics sounding pretty good and pretty similar…
      I also do not know how to EQ properly, so I rely on these Rodecaster presets for speed and convenience…
      It’s been on my mind to do a more thorough comparison, but I am thinking at this point I will save that video for early 2025, 1yr after this video…
      By then I would have had a lot more experience with both mics and audio in general to formulate a better opinion.
      But right now, I am still 50:50 on them and have pros and cons to both… I lean towards RE20 for sound quality, but I lean towards SM7B for convenience as it’s more forgiving I feel…
      RE20 I feel is more detailed but SM7B is smoother…

    Did the same as you with the RE20 and SM7B and bought both, waiting for the RE20 to be delivered, I do personally enjoy the RE20 more for the clarity and range it gives peoples voices, it's a lot nicer hearing it rather than a flatter less clear tone that the SM7B gives some peoples voices.
    Also using the rodecaster pro II so this video was helpful, thanks.

      I want it but struggling to put the money down considering I don’t really need it… it’s definitely a “want” lol… but hearing a fellow tech head has also got both, it’s making it harder to resist lol

    Nice video, I just made a similar one. I agree, the RE20 does sound “smoother” or “richer” if that makes sense although I tend to get more plosives in it cause I eat the mic (but that’s my fault). SM7B sounds great too but it’s obviously that combined with the aesthetic that everyone likes about it.

    • @leo_hoang
      @leo_hoang  7 месяцев назад

      This would have been the default RE20 Profile/Preset on the Rodecaster Pro II - I have since done more comparisons and featured this mic in more recent videos where I’ve included all settings. This was one of my first videos and I completely forgot to include all the details. But equally I wouldn’t have known to tweak much with RE20 so it would have just all been default via Rodecaster Pro II… I would have also boosted in Premiere Pro, as at 51db default I have found it pretty quiet…

      Hi, if you’re referring to the background noise coming from the desktop hard drive in the first time I tried testing, I just simply turned it off. The room was overall relatively quiet. Not sound treated at all and I live on a busy road, but overall no other noises coming from inside the room is all…
