Ultravox and Midge Ure are so underrated. I saw Midge Ure in concert a few years ago and he's just amazing, still hitting all those high notes beautifully. ❤️

They were big in Canada. CFNY Toronto (the radio station that inspired & later monikered Rush’s ‘Spirit of Radio’) gave early new wave bands lots of airplay). Many good songs, some more danceable. ‘Dancing with Tears In My Eyes’ & ‘Reap the Wild Wind’ are personal faves. Nice pic, Brandon.

Mr X is a standout for sure. The lyric is spoken by Warren Cann (drummer) and the sound and concept is mysterious. They also do a German version of it called Herr X. It segues into the intriguing, rumbunctious Western Promise, which segues into Vienna. It is a beautifully crafted album.

Hey Brandon. What a classic. Ultravox were an amazing band and this was their highlight in many respects. The song was kept off the top by a comedy record Joe Dolce and Shuttupayaface, a truly dreadful record. But that was the quirkiness on the British Charts back in the day. It took the band quite a while to get past this record and their career suffered for a bit in the same way as like Queen following up Bohemian Rhapsody etc. They were a truly brilliant synth band and they have some great tracks to follow this one up with on your channel. A particular favourite of mine in the Thin Wall which has a really good tempo to it. Great reaction and fully enjoyed this one. All the best. Dave✅✅

The Vienna album is very good. It starts with the bombastic and prog-like Astradyne, it has some really catchy songs like Sleepwalk and All Stood Still and more mysterious ones like Western Promise (about Asia) and the haunting Mr X with enigmatic spoken vocals by the drummer. I still listen to it now and it flows fantastically well. 💯

Interesting song. I remember when this came out thinking it was very poppy and accessible compared to their earlier work with John Foxx, who Midge Ure replaced, and being a bit disappointed at the time, I loved the dark industrial harshness of their album HaHaHa!. It is a good song, well-made, no doubt about it, and has lasted well, but I still find it a bit obvious. The video was very arresting and played a large part in its success. I enjoyed your reaction Brandon and I am glad you liked it. It is not typical of their style overall which is generally less sparse. But you do get these fascinating interplays between electronic and acoustic instruments at times. Midge Ure also plays lead guitar. The Canadian drummer Warren Cann is the lyricist btw, which is also unusual. I also like the drum machine use here but he often plays acoustic drums. The other 3 members all play synths. Midge Ure co-organised Live Aid with Bob Geldof.

Hello Brandon. Well I wasn't totally in this band but I knew them, and heard some of there songs, particularly "Dancing with the tear in my eyes" that I liked, believe it were big with the video a bit later than Vienna. Really. This is is sounding like a classic pop tune. It has a electronic feel with a special pulse very simple in a way (it reminds me Depeche Mode a bit) the classical viola sound made it original, orchestral inclusion. The change of speed is very interesting with the simple gear they could use at those 1980 area. Have a great New Wave feel. I didn't remember who were singing but his voice is very good, was it Midge Hure, or was he the Synth wizard behind? It is not my first time listening, but it's been a while I forgot. Thanks

The main synth guy is Billy Currie (who also plays violin, viola and piano). Christopher Cross also plays synths (and bass). Vocalist Midge Ure also plays synths (and lead guitar). Warren Cann plays electronic drums (and acoustic).

Lol I know fairly recently, I recommended the band Frumpy. I’ve been listening to them a lot lately and highly suggest the title track from their 1972 album “By The Way”. It’s pretty progressive, has a lot of cool keys and a section that is VERY hypnotic and trance inducing, as well being very upbeat! I’m happy that Spotify has finally got pretty much their entire discography now. I know your suggestion folder is getting overloaded….. I know you’d love this band. @@79BlackRose Maybe obvious wasn't the right word, and I am talking after hearing the song thousands of times over the past 40 years. At the time it was a surprising change of direction compared to before Ure arrived.
