Be careful, I had mine in ventilation mode and forgot about it during a heavy thunderstorm this night here in Germany and it was so much rain that there was water flowing through the top part and dropped onto my floor and the cat who then informed me in no uncertain terms that there was a water leak directly onto his spot with the cushion...
Normal rain is no problem though in ventilation mode, but with 40l/m² during roughly 30 minutes the window was overwhelmed from the flow off the roof over this window. I can't blame the window for this accident, that was just my "I forgot something important"...

Actually, the other thing we curse these windows for is the sound of rain on them. We have them in several bedrooms and it's a pain to try and sleep though a rainstorm. We've previously discussed the practically of installing some kind of mesh screen to reduce this issue. And would you believe, whilst investigating the hole/slide lock issue you mention, I've just found there IS an extra, external screen on a roller blind fitted on two of our veluxes. So I'm looking forward to hearing how the sound of rain is affected. Unfortunately one of the two had a defective spring, so only the one in my son's room works. But I'll get more of they do the job. They also cut the incoming light so maybe will help reduce the heat in this rooms. Can't believe these windows are so poorly understood!

I came across this when looking for something else. It’s interesting that even people that have installed then didn’t realise what the bolt was for ?
If that’s the case then I am pretty sure very few certainly realise the other purpose of the bolt. That is to provide a guide when fitting or reinstalling the window. As anyone that has done it knows its tricky to take the whole window in and out, as you have line up the curved brackets and slide them in and out while supporting the window
If you simply offer the window up, click the bolt into place and you will then find you can then pivot the window on this bolt while you engage or disengage the curved mounting brackets. While you still have to support the window because while the bolt is only on one side it’s a hell of a lot easier because it then takes most of the weight and allows you to line up the curved mounting brackets with one hand while positioning the window with the other hand.
I have one Velux window that I have to take in and out from time to time to get access to a flat roof area to clean windows and gutters, and once you get the hang of this its so much easier.
I once thought once why don’t Velux fit 2 bolts, then realised that having the bolt just on one side is better because allows you to position the window and line up the curved brackets better
The first time you do it maybe have an assistant to hand, but I can assure you that once you get the knack its so much easier to remove and refit the windows. Why don’t Velux tell you this? Maybe its one of those things they cant tell you to do, because some will get it wrong, but it’s a lot easier for those handy enough to be able to use the feature.
    Good luck!

The hole is identical to that in the top frame to hold the window open but storm proof and it was obvious as soon as you pivoted the window back for cleaning that the shoot bolt engaged with the lower hole - simple.

The hole may be obvious but many people don't know the bolt exists and they're not looking for it. I'm sure if everyone saw the bolt they would be able to put 2 and 2 together

@@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT Interesting, I'm sure that there was a note identifying the feature but then I may be recalling decades old instructions/features and besides i also had the advantage of having a good look over the Velux stand at the Building Exhibition at the NEC for several years. i would have thought it was obvious though as soon as you pull the window open to the horizontal position (central pivot) to maximise ventilation

On the centre pivot ones, they are-
    Closed fully.
    Pull back handle for ventilation.
Open window about 5cm and there is a bolt to hold it. This is good for security if the roof is next to a flat roof.
Open and moving - normal open.
Flipped and bolted. Use the same bolt but backwards in the bottom hole for cleaning.
Generally you can be on fully closed in the winter and then in the summer go to vent and then bolt to let the hot air out.

Genuinely didn’t know this. I thought the hole was for some type of blinds or netting accessory! Wow! This feels like a life event.

I have been doing this for years, but not to clean the glass. If you use this lock you get better air flow, hot goes out the top, cooler comes in the bottom.

If there's another hole near the top, that's to lock the window in a slightly ajar position so it doesn't flutter with the wind

That was the first thing I discovered when I bought a house with Velux windows, now I know why so many people get scammed and why these same people voted for the UK to leave the EU
