Why DIY with My Wife Was a Bad Idea!

- In this video, I take you through the rollercoaster journey of installing a custom-made fascia on our home, which ended up being a DIY disaster! The fascia was specifically designed and crafted by a professional architectural metalwork business to perfectly fit the section between our gable window and bifold doors. It was powder-coated to match our window and door frames, ensuring a seamless look.
I decided to tackle this project with the help of my wife, but things quickly went south. Despite my instructions, the fascia was installed 6mm off, causing a major headache. The adhesive used was a special contact adhesive, which made it nearly impossible to remove and reposition the fascia without damage. After a lot of struggle and frustration, I managed to get it off, but the ordeal left me wondering if asking my wife for help was the right decision.

Just remember, before you cast judgement about me losing composure, this is 30 seconds of frustration that I've shown everyone. Which equates to 0.00000001% of mine and Lou's life together. Lots of people don't show you the bad and the ugly on social media. I'm just keeping it real and being authentic
🥰
Mate my wife and i sometimes have exactly the same sort of carry on with our self build project. It’s often stressful and none of it is meant to be personal but sometimes my comments end up being. The trouble with doing this with your spouse is that it tests your dynamic at the toughest of times. In the end we always bounce off it and never look back. Seeing it for what it is and realising we aren’t perfect is key. As people keep telling us, and you i’m sure - it’ll all be worth it in the end! Well done for showing people reality, can tell you two are bombproof.
@@bapoo thanks mate 👍
Well said. These sort of evolutions are always fraught even if it is with an unrelated assistant. You have invested all the thinking time to come up with the solution and the game plan for implementing it, often over several weeks - and the assistant essentially just does not have the benefit of that deep understanding - just your communicated direction. Communication is difficult because it is not only transmission it also needs hearing and understanding.😀👍
I'm not sure the way to reacted was really that bad to be fair. Seemed like you guys were all good in the end anyway and hey that's what relationships are all about. Every relationship has arguments and disagreements and self building as you are is a real test. My misses got fed up with having to pick out bathroom furniture etc and just picked the same stuff for a few bathrooms and now doesn't like it but it's tough. I've installed some of it and will try and sell the rest but if I can't then she's stuck with it. To be fair if I'd had to pick then I'd probably just have gone for cheap everything so kind a glad I didn't as spending a bit more does get you a bit better quality. Anyway another great video as always, looking forward to seeing how you both progress.
Lou here, I’m not the best DIY person but I’m happy to give it a go ☺️ just got it wrong this time. I deal with traders getting frustrated with developers implementing bananas instead of apples all the time, not forgetting when I worked on the trading floor, so no need to call HR 😅. Aiden is super cute all the time, so one little moan is fine by me. I’d love to get more involved in our home build, hopefully you’ll see more of me as we get stuck in, have to say though knocking down walls is more my kind of thing 🔨 😬
If you really are Lou, well done to you girl. ❤
I look forward to seeing more of your and Aiden’s antics in the near future, please.
It is indeed me! I just changed my handle from Arthur our Frenchie. I’m not personally on social media unlike Arthur 🤩 I’’m Arthur’s momager @arthurmoss_monkeyboy 🥰
Well done for getting involved and retaining a rational perspective.😉👍
Blink once if you're being held against your will
I’m a trader and if you can handle us on the floor then you can handle this little outburst all day long! Great vid and I was laughing at the outburst as it’s the exact same thing I’d do to my mrs. Keep up the good work guys. Love this channel.
The most stressful video I have seen for a while!
When you said the only other person you'd want helping is another you, I know that feeling exactly.
Very smart result.
Def wouldn’t have winged it! The potential for water ingress here is massive. Well done for doing it right Aiden👏👌
Ive done projects with my Wife and it’s tough when it doesn’t go to plan. Time pressure with what you were doing exasperated the whole process. It’s a tough call to make and clearly, Lou stepped up and moved past the first attempt. Well done to the both of you for giving it your best. Looks very good to me
💪👏👍
My wife's called Lou, but my Lou would have probably stabbed me in the eye and tipped me and the scaffolding over if I had spoken to her like that 😂😂😂😂
😆 well there's no need for physical violence is there 😅
Great post showing the human challenge of executing on a task with highly demanding tolerances. If you filmed me and my other half doing the same job - your audience would be shocked by our colourful language! It’s clear that both of you want a great outcome. Great couples understand when the stress is talking vs serious disrespect. Thanks for keeping it real.
Aidan you don't need us to tell you how that looked. Kudos for putting the video up raw mate 👍
Your fault Aiden, not your Wife's. You should've asked Keith to return the drain favour.
😅 he's penciled in for something abit more strenuous
😂
Oh Aiden, reminded me of when i was an apprentice and didn't know what i was doing and the guy i was working with getting the hump with me! Fair play for showing it, we have all been there at some point, takes some guts to put it out to the world. Not sure many would have your attention to detail with the thermal break etc, but well done, another job ticked of the list. Well done Lou!
I just thought it was normal so wasn't bothered about putting it out there 🙈 although it definitely upset some people as they've decided I no longer meet their expectations 😬
Well ,it is normal, everyone has a domestic for want of a better term. No big deal. There are always people that will judge others, and its easily done from behind their keyboards. Keep up the good work and don't let them discourage you.
Thank you 🥰
The main issue is that after all, you're always the only one to know about and notice these imperfections. There's always going to be some. Sometimes perfection can be the enemy of good. And with limited time and energy available accepting a quicker less good, but semi temporary finish might be the better option.
The most relatable video ever. The few times I've had to rope mrs TaZ into a job, I apologise both before and after for the things I may or may not say to her. She gets it, she's knows I like things done a certain way and I'm very particular and that anything I say during her doing it ever so slightly different is not meant with any malice and it's just my stress and frustration letting itself out. We are always totally fine with each other once the task is done, it's just the way it is. Glad you managed to get it sorted, Lou did a fine job imo. (the 2nd time)
Yeah it wasn't an issue afterwards. Ironically the negative comments from men that were offended on her behalf were actually the thing that she found offensive. I had to delete them all because she was getting upset. We've been messing about since, swearing at each other and saying we will set the RUclips police on to the other.
Love that someone out there has the same obsessively stressful attention to detail as me.
It can drive me crazy at how I can become so focussed and almost obsessed with a particular detail. But when you get it right and it works - it makes it worth it. We just get jobs done a little slower eh?
Nice work Aidan and Lou - looks very clean.
I want to show my Mrs how you lost your temper when yours didn’t understand and say “I’m not the only one see!!”. I hope she gives you plenty back though 👌🏼
Oh of course, I get moaned at all of the time 😆

im building my house been doing it 3 years now i feel your pain also like your approach to you tube nice and candid
Does everyone think you should have finished it ages ago?
@@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT nar its a big whole house and doing it on own probably 3 more years to go
Aiden, I showed this to my wife, of 40 years, and her comment was, "so there are other stroppy sods on the planet!!!!"
Lou, she read yours comments below, and reminded me, that her response would not have been as composed as yours.
No one is perfect hey, not even the fascia is 😆
Well done Aiden (and Lou) in achieving the objective. It was an ambitious evolution and you pulled it off - and into the bargain - provided us with entertainment and drama.😀👍
Thanks Norman 🙂7 people didn't like the drama, they unsubscribed 😬

I'm at 14:00 and laughing my head off at your demeanor - been in this sort of situation with our lass several times. Can't wait to see how it turns out! Will watch it when I stop cackling....
Hey, very good job in the end and Lou is a superstar. You should be kinder, she seems lovely! Glad you worked it out.
“…and only then, when she 100% confirms that it is at the top and in the right place, only then will we lay it flat”. Okay, I know this is serious business, but I have watched your videos and I also know that you are genuinely a good guy, the opposite of a a**. So, when you looked into the camera, after already going on about the plan, and said the quote above, I have to admit, I laughed pretty hard. I do have compassion for you both. I do. You guys did a great job. It looks fantastic. It does. Aiden? It looks 100% womderful.
Looks great, a well thought out finish detail and I don't blame you for losing the head I would have done the same😂
I wish I could have handled it better 😅 that's stress for you 🙈
Wow Aiden, half expecting to see you with a black eye on the next video!!! 🤣 looks quality though, definitely the best choice 👍🏻
Some things are best left off social media me thinks . On a brighter note if you listen to your little bicker with your eyes closed it could be a totally different scenario 😂
Ps you should come over to ours when my wife and I cook the Sunday roast together 🥵
Ah that's part of the problem though really, too many people on social media make out like everything is perfect which makes loads of other people feel rubbish about their lives.
Haha too many cooks spoil the broth hey
@@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT💯
I'd have masking taped a batten to the front of it, to help with stopping the deflection. Don't know if that would have damaged the power coating though.
Yeah that would have been a good idea, I just kept it with the scaffold board all the time apart from the last little lift to its final resting place. I think it must be something to do with the application and baking of the powder 🤷 I can also see the same issue with the frames but it's nowhere near as bad
She’s sacked ! 😂😂😂
Haha 😆
That made me smile 😂
Had that nearly all the time with a starting apprentice, I think it boils down to they don't want to fu@k it up and have no confidence.
Poor Lou… from what little there is of my feminine side. 😂😂😂
Honestly though Aiden, you surely know that most of our other halves/partners just DO NOT get it when it comes to manual stuff like this.
We love ‘em, and sometimes hate ‘em, bless Lou’s little cotton socks. 😂
Oh, and well done you, in the end, for recovering the job. 👍
she can do it when she pays attention though 🫣
@@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT I’ve no doubt. You, on the other hand, seem to be able to do anything, props to you bud. 👍
Those bellends at the warehouse should have some 1" timber materials to carry soft and thin stuff. Once wrapped up, all stiff. They even do it in 3.6s, who'd have known?
Looks tidy.
Yeah that would have been a good idea
Oh I’ve lived this. Getting my gf to understand that mm matter and trying to explain the simplest of actions to someone without any concept of space. Then I tried to cook something with about 5/6 smaller dishes which she does without thinking about it and realised she had exactly the same feeling about me when it comes to timing/cooking 😅
Yeah not everyone has the same skillset 😅 even though we understand that, it's still frustrating 😑
@@THE-AIDEN-PROJECToh yes most definitely. That’s why where at all possible I stay out her way in the kitchen and she stays out of the tool box (she still can’t see the difference between a Phillips and a pozi 😁)
looks good, hope your eyebrows look as good in the morning !
Ah she wasn't bothered 😆 her default is she can't do these type of things and so doesn't try so it is a task to convince her to pay attention
Things have to be pretty challenging before resorting to asking the missus for help f ups and arguments are bound to ensue. I think there's a similar deafness to male diy instructions for them as there is for requests to take the bins out for us. BTW, where are you in the UK and how much did the land cost and what's the budget for the house build? Just trying to work out whether it's at all viable for me, with/without the RUclips channel!
😆 I rarely take the bins out as it goes, we tend not to stick to the traditional gender roles.
East of England. Bought it as a class q barn conversion, 2 acres. £300k. The build, including fees and stuff but not including the lodge, about another 300k
You've done the right thing, she needs to do better than that 😂
😆
😝
Could be worse. My missus helped me and ended up breaking my finger and cutting the top off. I still haven't told her she did it as she would be horrified. 😬
Christ 😱
@@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT I was quite cocky whilst on the gas. It soon changed when they had to put my nail back in repeatedly. The missus passed out on the third attempt 😆 Nails are best avoided.
Hey, listen Aiden, I have the same problem with my missus and she knows what she's doing 😂😂😂😂
🤯 are they doing it on purpose 😆
@@THE-AIDEN-PROJECTSeems like it eh.
Imagine if keith had stuck that on 😂

Keith would have used something he found down a back alley
Great job, looks fantastic oh, I would be the same in terms of OCD too!
Why tf would you trust her to do that!?
Sorry Aiden, in relation to the theme DIY with my Wife. Word to the wise, If you think you have a handle on the progress of your project ( technically ). Preoccupied by level, square and to the millimeter, your, ( mine ) wife just wants the project fucking finished. I'm already getting vibes for divorce so that she can get a kitchen fitter in ( Lithuanian in this case ). So close to divorce and yet so far. Lithuania, that is.
My God man, I totally feel your pain. I react in the same moody teenager manner when my "helper" does similar things. And I also swear as much (if not more) than you do. I totally feel your pain, I really do. Words are easy, but we have to calm down and appreciate the help.
I think I would have been ok if she was a little bit off but it was really bloody obvious 🙈 at that point I didn't think we'd get another chance 😅
@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT I've been in the same boat, that moment of anger over something like that. No judgement from me, i know the feeling
My life of DIY revolves around not asking my wife.
If I had more arms like go go gadget then I'd be the same 😅
Like anything no one else would notice it, but you would no it's there.
Hi Aiden, always love your videos. This one was a difficult watch. Frustration gets the better of all of us from time to time but it’s never nice to see a man verbally losing it with the one he loves. It’s like seeing someone kick their dog. Hats off to Lou for giving it another go and possibly facing another barrage of flack. Maybe video you apologising to her for all the swearing? Patience is a virtue we should all try to achieve. All the best.
I can think of worse things! Like having to watch another Dan and Sam 🫣 (a social media influencer couple that have gone viral with their constant clickbait captions). Personally, it makes me feel so uncomfortable just watching them. It just doesn’t feel natural or sincere, surely no couple is that perfect all the time?! I think there are worse things than Aiden letting off a bit of steam. It's a glimpse of reality, and no one under pressure can always keep their cool
I'll be honest Your first attempt at fitting it I couldn't watch it, It was to stressful 😅
😱😮💨
standard relationship right there!!!!! Glad its not just me! She knows you were stressed, and the importance of getting it right - it would be the other way around if i was assisting her with one of her jobs - make no mistake!!!!!! Great content - Lou, you did ok (keeps him on his toes! lol
As you were having the barney over the positioning, I was thinking 'get it off quick before it sets!!!'
Haha I tried to pull it off my end but it was stuck solid, when I went over to her side to confirm the massive gap I pulled it and it hadn't set as solid, so it gave me abit of leverage by the time I got to the right hand side 😅
Steam is your friend with releasing contact adhesives!
Looks great in the end. No one makes mistakes, on purpose, so although I understand your frustation, a deep breath before opening your mouth might have been in order 😃
I was more frustrated with the outcome rather than at Lou 🙈 after all I half expected her to not get it perfect
Wow man! Love the perfection and understand the bad language. Great work.
Jeez mate, wasn't bad at all. A good job done together. All's well that ends well.
Well done Lou 👏🏻
Pure comedy gold ! 😂 get your girlfriend to help you more often lad !! 😆🌞
Looks great, but I'm amazed that ladder didn't accidentally get pushed over whilst you were standing on it!
😆 if Lou was thinking straight maybe she would have thought of doing that! She's a totally different person at work 🧐
so weird to see you here @sdgelectronics. it's truly a small world.
just a few days ago I subscribed to your channel after watching the flux and solder comparison videos :D
😂
lol I just got the joke ha ha. It went over my head the first time 🤣🤣
It's hard being a perfectionist Aiden. I know myself. Lou did great. All looks really smart.
She did great the second time round 🫣
Thank you we got there in the end 🥰
Looks pucker! I know the feeling at 17:59 and it pains me to see you losing your cool. When you're not 100% sure or confident and being yelled at under pressure it's easy to mess up being 'helper'. Should have given me a shout!
Haha I didn't raise my voice until afterwards 🫣 she just said that she didn't feel under pressure. I think she just said it was in the right place even though her eyes could see it wasn't 🤷
Haha, for the record you left 1 or 2 swear words in 😂 Hope you said sorry later! Looks really nice though, thoughtful detail. When it comes to helpers, how come Dan is no longer on crew?
Ah Dan had some issues and we ultimately decided it would be best to not continue our friendship
I reckon the problem was you are seeking perfection - which is understandable, you want it to look good - but the process was difficult because of the size of the materials & using contact adhesive. To expect an inexperienced person to do that was never gonna work. Car crash DIY.....swearing....tears.....divorce. Perhaps keep such complicated jobs for when you have someone who can handle quite complex fitting. Not fair to take it out on someone who was trying to help. I'm sure you couldn't help it, the stress got too much and you had to take it out on someone or something, else you would have exploded. But not fun for anyone. But on a positive note you got the job done. Looks really good btw. 👍
And that, internet, is real life! Fair play to you both 👍
Love your videos mate. Came across them today and wanted to say
Thanks dude
My wife can't stand helping me, it goes something like that, I do try and stay calm, but when they have assured you they understand. Luckily, my daughter is much more practical, so I get her to help me when she's home :)
Now I know why she had me put the glass protector on her phone 😆
Great video Aiden + Lou. We're living a very similar life. Dragging an old Victorian house into the 21st century. I guess the only difference is she usually does a better job than me.
Thanks buddy, I think you're the first person that's acknowledged Lou like this 🙌 ah we all do our best hey 🙂
I get your point about a single join highlighting the offset, but if you'd made a shorter section across the middle, IE have two joins, I think no one would notice the offset
Ahaa you're only the second person that suggested that 🙌, Keith was the other. I still prefer the seamless look 😉
@@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT I agree, although honestly I'd have probably gone the £20 pvc route!
Couldn't you just use a strong adhesive sealant like CT1 to stick it on? It would have given you plenty of time to wiggle it around. I've asked my girlfriend to help with DIY things before and it always ends badly, I think it's easy to forget they usually don't have the same level of experience,
That may have worked, I would have had to check with them if it sticks to neoprene. Although it doesn't work in as high a temperature as the one I used. If we had a proper summer I could have checked what temperature the frames get up to and then it would have been a serious option
Don't think I've ever done DIY with the wife where it didn't end in a row - standard life
For that reason I would have avoided using contact glue and gone for mechanical fixings and put colour coded screw caps on them and maybe some builders adhesive on the back aswell.
I considered it but it wouldn't have looked as sleek
@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT maybe not but it would have saved a bust up with the wife and nobody would have ever noticed it but you.
Adjusting to someone takes some adjusting, but ones adjust everything is a blast 😊
And it starts raining right then! 😂 Mate it's frustrating but you'll look back and laugh. It'll be a story that comes up and you'll both laugh. Don't want to sound rude but I found it funny to watch. Great video and we'll done both of you getting it done. When ever me and my missus try diy together it usually ends up with us arguing, messing it up and then hysterical laughter at the mess 👍🏻
I probably made it look and sound worse than it was 😆 we was speaking normally afterwards. Lesson learnt though, even the second time I should have slowed down and waited for her to answer each of the 4 different ways I asked her if it was in the right place or not 🙈
@@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT still funny as fuck.if anything it has given me hope in that it's not just me. Great job mate.

😂🤣
🤣😂
That looks top notch mate! Definitely worth the extra time and effort. We’ve all been frustrated doing fiddly jobs like this so things can get tense. Me and my wife had a falling out when she tried to help me put the feet on our new fridge freezer early on in our relationship, she was doing the opposite to what I explained and I angrily asked her if she was doing it on purpose, had to finish the job on my own
Lol 🤣😂
😆
Well I had to have a Brandy between the two fittings.
Glad you both overcame your first attempt.
Looks great and another job done ✔️ 👍
Guess all the build up to getting ot perfectly made up. Led to the frustration and cursing.
Glad you changed sides and hopefully the mrs will have a bit more confidence to next time you need an extra pair of hands.
Indeed, although I swear lots anyway 🙈 she does tend to give up too easily and not really listen 😑 it's tough to convince her that she can do these types of things. You're right though, it's just down to confidence
@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT Exactly, small jobs are achieved, and confidence grows.
You'll need an extra pair of hands on some jobs.
So hopefully, the Mrs will have been praised up and have more confidence next time you need her help.
Some people learn through words that others need a practical demonstration.
All in all, you've done a great job so far, and I appreciate the real-life post.
Can't stand people who pretend to be 🤬 perfect.
I’ve got this! I’m a bit of a weed tbh so not much use with heavy lifting but I’m sure there are things I can help with without having to worry about accuracy 🫣
love this channel for exactly this, real life
Thanks mate 🙂
Aiden works super hard, I’m so proud of him 🥰
Im completing an extension, having built my house before I met my wife. The stress and constant explaining now is too much. When you realise it’s down to you only, and don’t bother asking her,it’s a lot easier. Sometimes I spend ages making up an apparatus to carry out a task which could be done by two PRACTICAL people. Believe me I have learnt. Keep up the good work. It is hard at times, however very satisfying when done.
This is why my wife doesn't help me because she knows it will end up in an argument.
I freely admit that I can be a nightmare, I put it down to working pretty much on my own for so many years..
🙈 I tend to prefer working on my own also. It wasn't much of an argument though, we were speaking to each other like normal afterwards 😅
Aiden, sorry mate, last post. Cosidering that most bulk chemicals are manufactured in China ( Hundreds of thousands of tons in bulk containers ). Why do we pay in the UK, basically £10 for 50ml of epoxy glue ( Araldite as an example ), when the stuff purchased in bulk is a fraction of the price. ( Used many variants in my job ). Not kidding Aiden, buisiness opportunity for an alternative outlet, bigger, affordable, fixed ratio packages for DIY. Just a thought, although Burtons Strong Ale lubricates the thought process. All the best.
Hi Aiden, keep up the good work. Here's my tip. Having worked in the aerospace industry and access, lets leave it there, Acid Etch Epoxy Primer ? ( two pack, mainly used on Aluminium et al ). If only I could get hold of it now.
Works on softwood, ( one coat ) seals the grain/end grain. Can be overcoated, not had any problems with Sadolin.
I still to this day have offcuts of projects primed with this stuff, intended for bonding or painting, fresh as the day it was applied.
It obviously resists degradation, apart from the epoxy film applied, might be the Strontium Chromate yellow pigment, who knows ?
Up to my bollocks at the mo with a builder that bailed ( "I'll see you in court " ), fucking amateur scum ! ( should have seen the knucle scraping application of my epdm flat roof ) and a wife that considers I over engineer everything.
No contest, not changing for anyone. There's the door, Fuck'em.
The stresses of being a perfectionist 😂
All good and well, but why you are building a church 😂😂😂😂
Isn't it more like an Aldi supermarket? 😆
🤣😂👍🏻
Well retail is the new religion
Your vids just get better and better, the mrs and I were replacing a 6' x 6' fence panel a few weeks ago, just slotting it in together from the top, my language was shocking when she couldn't put her end in (ooooh errrr), but as soon as the job was done we were pissing ourselves at the whole thing.
We have been together 25 years, so you can imagine how many times this has happened! Keep on keeping on 😀

looks great. maybe you should have done a dry fit before not just explaining. you had that 10mm offcut or use the whole thing

And just the one swearing fit
@@imaginitivity7853 Pretty sure there would have been at least a couple of dry/swearing fits. LMAO.😂
Yep, that does look tidy
I got into the adhesive weeds one time, with synthetic materials it's all about the 'surface energy' of the material. I had a Peli style case that I wanted to stick neoprene to the interior, 3M came to the rescue with a tape designed for low energy surfaces.
I think the double sided tape they used was also 3m, they've got some good stuff
You can also change the surface energy of things 👍 sometimes even temporarily.
@@Swwils Peli cases are made from polyuerthane I think, it is one of the most difficult surfaces to bond to. When I looked into ways to stick things to the case, I found primers that did what you said. In the end a 3M distributer sent me a free sample of one of the VHB tapes.
@@JohnnyMotel99 PU is easy! We stick stuff to almost zero surface energy silicones and it needs cold plasma treatment 👍
