  • One of the many perks of pursuing a career in architecture is that you are not restricted to a particular role. There are many different paths you can follow within the architecture profession.
Depending on the size of the firm these specialization hats could all be worn by one architect. In a larger firm there could be one person or a whole team assigned to each topic.
In addition, some of these roles may be as an outside consultant on behalf of the primary architecture design office. For example it is common to contract a Spec Writer from outside the office to prepare the building specification rather than having a full time in house staff member.
Here are some of the architect specializations currently in the marketplaces across the world!
Note: This is by no means an exhaustive list, as there are many other niches within architecture that can be very rewarding. However this should give you a broad overview of what may be a good fit for your skills and talents within architecture.

As an architect you will be doing all of these things. Working long hours in low pay during your twenties. In your thirties you may be on an average salary. By your forties you need to start own business or work way up to director level in larger company to start earning half decent money.

5 years in the job field. This comment is spot on. Be a plumber or a teacher. Anything that pays decent and give you time to enjoy life. You only get one shot at life. Don't waste it working meaningless hours and hours in a firm. My wife is a teacher, she still makes a significant amount more than me, while enjoying summer/winter breaks and holidays. Originally I bought into the love of architecture. As each day goes by, I regret it more and more. Strongly advise pursuing any other career unless you're okay with borderline average pay, extra hours and dealing with arrogant architects.
