This is our experience of the president declaring martial law and what followed. We were awake and watching it all. This could have majorly affected Hugh's work and big projects/events he is currently working on. 6 months to a year's worth of income would all be gone...This is how we feel at the moment and how things are at the moment: of course things could change. I wasn't able to reply to everyone messaging us, so I hope this video helps.

"We are not going back!" Sent shivers through me when you said that, as that was a rallying cry recently in my country, where the 'people' decided that yes, they wanted to go back to oppression, hate, and discrimination. I am happy for the people of South Korea and proud of them, too. I wish we had done as well.

Here in Massachusetts it was early in the afternoon and I was scrolling through my social media when I first learned of this from you. Immediately I switched to the BBC to figure out what was going on and why.
The closest analogy we have in recent memory is January 6, 2021. The less said about that the better, but I was busy donating platelets when that happened watching a K-drama on the monitor at my chair so I only found out about it afterwards. Now it looks like everyone who was convicted of a crime in that riot may get a presidential pardon next month. Ugh.

I've worked hard to be able to do this trip. What does this mean for my plans?" Selfish, I know, but as you said, it's something you do have to think about. For one minute I was in panic when I saw the news, but then I quickly remembered that 90% of the South Korean men are military trained. They could fight back if needed.
Martial law won't work because the military consists of sons (and daughters) of the South Korean people. The soldiers won't turn their guns on civilians who are their friends and family. Especially not for this president whom everybody hates.

The law could have changed. Back when there protests relating to the speechwriter and daughter of the dictator, English language Korean news brought up ‘foreigners’ can’t legally take part. I would double check with Australia what you are legally allowed to do and what you should not do. The place isn’t Australia.
I have been watching prosecution going after the relatives of the current and former president, both in different political parties. I think there are people positioned in media and government to cause mischief and have been there for a while. The place didn’t get to the bottom of who was behind the speechwriter. IMHO. I think maybe only one president in Korea managed to die of natural causes after his term with no imprisonment at any point during or after their term.

Korean society is very socialist/communist country. I slept through it but martial law doesnt surprise me. Besides people able to vote, korea is very similar to China with social and political wise. Freedom in korea are defined by social standards and thats the reality tbh. Ppl have to think, act, dress, talk the same like others and if you go against a social norm, then you are labeled as a social outcast.

Throughout his term, he has faced opposition and relentless calls for investigations into the illegal and unconstitutional
actions of both himself and his wife, as well as demands for his impeachment.
In response, he declared martial law in a blatantly unconstitutional move, bypassing due process and branding his opponents
as pro-North Korean communists. However, the parliament nullified his actions within approximately 140 minutes.
Now, he is left with only two paths: to press forward in an attempt to establish a dictatorship or to face investigation for
rebellion and the prospect of impeachment.

First, martial law can only be called in certain circumstances. There was no concrete circumstance to warrant calling martial law.
You cannot call martial just for personal reasons.
The current president and his wife were under investigation for awhile now and there was an attempted impeachment prior to the recent incident. Second, in order to officially and legally call martial law, you must follow protocol and discuss with other officials.
He secretly planned with certain military officials and called martial law out of the blue. What the Korean president did was an attempted coup. Look up coup. You need to learn more about what martial law is in general.
