The Constitution was written when broadsheets were the most effective mass media. We need to rethink a few things, starting with the electoral college.

Also, Trump has abused his power as President of our Country! He has taken advantage & this needs to be addressed & laws enacted where being the President doesn't mean you can do whatever you want to!

Good panel discussion. Worth hearing their views, and more often than once a year. (Hint to Face the Nation).

The wider problem is Americans believe history - and Western democracy - begins with America.

    • @diogenesofseattle2344

I'm an American fully aware of the existence of the early modern republics in Venice & the Netherlands, not to mention classic & ancient forms of democratic rule in the Mediterranean.
Of course, I only know these things because I read actual books.

Tell Joe Scarborough on MSNBC. Maybe you can get him to recognise American conservatives have been polluting the discourse long before Trump.

I think the problem is that too many believe that history ends with America - that we're the result that civilization has been pointing to all along.

I love this historical focus, a good perspective for younger people who haven't been around for very many presidents.
Jill is absolutely your best guest here! Peter was great too, factual. I like it.
Blaming twitter for "things not being like they used to" is absolutely not productive.
The internet is magic, which is amazing but it has good and bad consequences.
It is a beautiful new technology you seem to be dismissing as "Twitter"
    Get with the times, oldies.

As a non-Americans, seems to me that you guys invest your presidents with a disproportionate amount of power. Because America is such a powerful country, those of us who are not Americans are thankful that you have the DOJ and the lower and upper houses to mediate presidential power. Particularly with such an ego-driven individual as Mr. Trump.

I’ve read the posts on this video and I must admit it makes me sad to see how people integrate individuals personality and morality to policies and direction of the U.S. what fools are under this illusion that an individual is the reason he or she wins an election and that there morals have any impact on what should or shouldn’t decide to vote for them lol. It’s about there ideas and there willingness to fight to make them happen that I vote for someone. The past 40 years have brought the U.S. government here Trump has been a part of that for two years and those two years have been peace and prosperity for the Country. The only chaos and unstable ridiculous behavior has been the network news and there politicians and Guests that project unreasonable perspectives and use unnamed sources and secondhand opinions to gin up worry and anger (Russia and Trump colluded to steal the election from Hillary) the Democratic lie is going down as the most embarrassing media story in U.S. America history and the reason why is all the corruption and abuse of power and institutions that has been ignored by the majority of press and network political news

*there* (adverb): in, at, or to that place or position, e.g. 'I've never been there', 'his car is over there'.
*their* (third person plural possessive determiner): belonging to or associated with people or things, e.g. ' *their* morals have any impact', 'it’s about *their* ideas'.

In general, I really enjoyed this discussion and I thought the comment about the polarization machine was very interesting and this rings true for me.
BUT, this group tries to blame the sides equally. This is just incorrect. It was conservatives and Republicans who pushed much harder for the polarization. Ex. ruclips.net/video/71CyRYy7y3g/видео.html

To be American is to be wholly ignorant of history.

    • @diogenesofseattle2344
      @diogenesofseattle2344 5 лет назад +3

No it is not. To be American is to feel one has the right to be ignorant of history. Some of us studied it anyway. We've looked on in horror these past 3 or 4 decades.
One thing I learned by studying history is that far too few Americans study history to protect our republic from tyranny.

@@diogenesofseattle2344 Agreed. Many Americans hold a xenocentric view of the US vs world and make a (not necessarily) choice to ignore American and world history, because they have a false sense of superiority which then provides a false sense of security. They live in the present & either don't care or don't understand, how history can help determine our future.
