  • Another in a series of movies/television episodes that are similar in content and style to "One Step Beyond". This is an episode of Westinghouse Desilu Playhouse from November 24 1958, written by Rod Serling . . .

Only recently did I learn that Rod Serling was a real life WW2 hero. Apparently, he used writing and eventually television to deal with his PTSD. No one had a term for people who suffered trauma back then, and I honestly think we all owe Rod a big “Thank You” for paving the way to bringing attention to what we call “The Greatest Generation”.
Because, thus far, they are still our greatest of the last century.

My personal opinion is one involving writers. Back in the day independent writers had their stories chosen to be produced for these types of shows. Now it seems that each show has their own staff of writers. I think the story lines get deluded because the group becomes too familiar with each other’s style of writing. They tend to want to please each other rather than express their own ideas.

In The Twilight Zone Companion, there is a section on The Time Element and Rod Serling's twist ending...Marc Scott Zicree writes: Apparently, the sponsor was extremely nervous about the ambiguous ending, and so at the end of the show Desi Arnaz stepped out and offered his "rational" explanation of the events: "We wonder if Pete Jensen did go back in time or if he ever existed. My personal answer is that the doctor has seen Jenson's picture at the bar sometime before and had a dream. Any of you out there have any other answers? Let me know." This prompted one irate journalist to write, "GO HOME, DESI!"... a spoof of the Cuban "Yankee Go Home!" mantra of the 1950s.

These were properly-trained and successful stage actors, hence the better acting in movies and TV in that era. Today, parts are cast merely on the "look" of the actor despite their ability to actually act. As for the scripts, writers of that era were better paid. Today, there's almost no budget for the writers. A talented writer like Serling has stories gushing from their minds like a fire hose. It's all they can do to have their typewriters keep up with them (many used Dictaphones and pools of typists.) Writers of that caliber have almost no market for their output today because there's no budget anymore.

This was a great episode. Many times I wonder, if I were able to go back in time, would I be able to change events as they occurred? Possibly a little, but not much because most events are beyond our control. All we can do is change the way we look at them and how we interpret them.

I was born in 55'...I grew up on this quality of film-making. It made me think, made me imagine, made me wonder. It taught me to question everything. To love my Country. To respect my parents, teachers. To value hard work, and respect myself. To treat others as I would like to be treated. What have "THEY" done to that ? And WHY ? To you young people ; You are being formed into something very different from what you COULD be... Find God, and ask a lot of questions. Good Luck...

Another great story written by Rod Serling. A brilliant cast with an introduction by Desi Arnaz. I’ve seen it before and glad I re-found it again. Very clever for its time and being a huge fan of the original The Twilight Zone’s and The Night Gallery, it has brought back times where acting was most important to portray the roles involved to make the stories just right. Thank you for sharing this amazing 1958 film.

I kept it on my desktop for several weeks and finally watched it. I will take an older show over new any day of the week. As one of the commentors says when television wasn't trash. Thank you, Mr. Serling, I always feel saddened and thoughtful after watching your excellent program.

But a sad commentary on the overall quality of of movies today as I was reminded when I wanted to see a movie last night. I was interested in seeing a good film to sweep me intellectually and visually away from my current reality. What all the local cinemas had to offer (for the most part) was nothing but mindless and meaningless trash held together with special effects.

But at the same time, I'm also pretty much convinced that, objectively, pluses and minuses from one era to another . . . pretty much even out. Not for everyone . . . nor for everything . . . but in general.
