I used to love White Ladder back in the day! David has such a great and unique voice. Sail Away and Babylon have always been my personal favourites but that whole is album is great, I’ll have to give it another spin sometime soon. Cheers guys 😄

I find it hard to believe there is a top10 David Gray songs list without the song that began it all, SHINE, from his debut album A CENTURY ENDS (I like the title track too as it gives a hint of the more electrified sound to come later). SHINE was played repeatedly on an alternative music show on Irish TV called NO DISCO, and was probably responsible for him having such a strong fan base in Ireland initially. GATHERING DUST is another great track off that debut album.
The other song I'd have to include is THE LIGHT from his second album, FLESH. I loved the steel string guitar in that track, and had the good fortune to see him and his band play it live in 1994 in a small venue in my home town. The sad thing was, I saw him play again the next year, and he was touring solo because he couldn't afford to keep the full band with him (he was still an amazing performer, and that gig was fantastic). The fan favourite tracks from FLESH are probably COMING DOWN, FALLING FREE, or MYSTERY OF LOVE. He was such a nice guy too, it was brilliant to see him get the incredible success from WHITE LADDER a few years later.
Even WHITE LADDER was a stroke of luck in that he was going to quit music, and his drummer had to convince him to record the album. The drummer, Clune also did some work with the electronic act ORBITAL at the time, so he gave them a copy of the track PLEASE FORGIVE ME, which they then remixed and played at some of their gigs. That generated a bit of buzz, and at the same time, the song THIS YEAR'S LOVE got used in a movie and the whole thing blew up from there. An overnight success 10 years in the making.

Great info and always remember it is easy to say you can't believe this or that song isnt on there when you aren't making the list. I always point this out to others because no matter what is on there people will be outraged something was left off

@@ReactionsToTheClassics Ah I know that :). My lists would be pretty obscure at the best of times.
Not really outraged, but am genuinely kinda surprised that Shine didn't make the list simply because of how well known it was here before and after White Ladder, and it was how he was seen for years, as the solo singer songwriter. But I would still choose Gathering Dust or The Light ahead of it :)

David Gray is my favorite artist, and trying to narrow it down to ten songs would be heartbreaking. Shine, as another commenter mentioned, should have been on the list. David Gray has a greatest hits album titled Shine that is focused on his early years. Of his newer stuff, Snow In Vegas is a standout for me. As for Flame Turns Blue, he tells about some of the inspiration for that song in some of the live recordings. It's longer than I am willing to summarize, but an entertaining story.

As we now the 2000s is not an era I have familiarity with, but I assumed I'd at least recognise Babylon - was beginning to doubt it but then the chorus hit and now I finally know what people mean when they say 'they've only heard the chorus' of a song...MUST have heard the rest a fair few times, but it clearly didn't stick at all. Anyway, my favourites here were actually the most recent songs - Heart and Soul and Fugitive, with an HM for Say Hello, Wave Goodbye. But good work from Richard in giving us some further 2000s education!

Yep I bought white ladder like most other ppl in Ireland and the uk it seems. I knew it was a huge album but 20 times platinum is mind boggling. The remixed Version of Babylon that became a hit a few years later in the uk is my personal favorite and one of my fav tunes to listen to in general. A lot of other great tunes on that album too. I heard one or 2 of his other tunes also that he released later but nothing that caught my attention like white ladder

Oh The One I love is the other tune that caught my attention and I vaguely remember hearing it was an attempt to break in the states
